The Roost Podcast | Ep. 22 – Rice Football Early Signing Period

December 22, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2020 Rice Football recruiting class has its first signees. Carter and Matthew break down the new additions and analyze how they fit with the current roster.

The Early Signing Period has become the defacto National Signing Day. This year, the 2020 Rice Football Recruiting class inked 17 of its 19 members, holding onto only a handful of remaining slots for February additions. Each of these players was brought to South Main with a purpose. Follow along to hear how the Owls plan to utilize their new additions.

Episode 22 Notes

  • The Roost Postseason Survey — We didn’t mention it directly on the podcast, but please take a moment to fill out this brief survey. Feedback makes us better. Whether you have comments on the site, the podcast or anything else, we want to hear it. Thanks!
  • Biggest areas of need — Quarterback and offensive line stood out as two positions Rice needed to answer in this recruiting cycle. One of the biggest takeaways from the initial signees was the Owls’ response to that need. More on the decision to take two quarterbacks and the outlook for the offensive line after losing three graduate starters.
  • Position by position outlook —  Beyond the generic information (height, hometown, position, etc), each addition has a specific role they’ll be asked to play for Rice football in the near future. Which players will see the field soonest and which players will benefit the most from an offseason workout program with head strength and conditioning coach Hans Straub?

The Roost Podcast | Ep. 21 – The Roosties and 2019 Rice Football Season Review

December 13, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2019 Rice Football is complete. Carter and Matthew look back at the year and hand out The Roosties, season-long superlatives for top players and plays.

It’s been a wild ride, but the 2019 Rice Football season has reached its conclusion. In addition to the more conventional awards — Team MVP, Offensive Newcomer of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year, etc — we’ve taken some creative liberties with these awards.

  • The Roost Postseason Survey — Thank you to all who have followed the podcast or the website this season. The journey has been a fun one and we’ve been glad to be here every step of the way. But we want to get better, too. Let us know what you liked and what you didn’t in this brief survey. Thanks!
  • Rice Football end of season thoughts —  Before getting to the fun, Carter and Matthew give their parting thoughts on the 2019 season. The offense had moments but was a bit underwhelming compared to preseason expectations. On the other hand, the defense had a year better than just about everyone’s expectations. On the whole, things are headed in the right direction. The tone of the offseason should once again be optimistic.

The Roost Podcast | Ep. 20 – 2019 UTEP Review and redshirt recap

December 5, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football went out on top, ending their season on a three-game winning streak. Carter and Matthew recap the UTEP win and recap key redshirt players.

It took a few months to get here, but Rice football got rolling at the tail end of the 2019 season. The defense allowed one touchdown and the offense put up 30 points in their final regular season game, a road win over UTEP. Quarterback JoVoni Johnson, a notable redshirt player, was instrumental, scoring his first career touchdowns. More on Johnson, other redshirt players and the UTEP game in this week’s show.

Episode 20 Notes

  • End of season updates —  Our next show, Ep. 21, will feature postseason awards and superlatives. Have a player or an award you’ve got in mind? Leave it in the comments or send it our way on social media. While you’re here, please take a moment to fill out our postseason survey and let us know what you thought of the podcast and the site as a whole.
  • UTEP Review — When Kai Locksley went down, UTEP’s offense disappeared. Credit belongs to the Rice football defense, though, who did what they were supposed to do against a backup quarterback by holding the Miners scoreless in the second half. Meanwhile the offense generated several explosive plays, led by Aston Walter and freshman wideout Zane Knipe. It was an all-around complete showing and another win.
  • Redshirt updates — Only one Rice football player appeared in exactly five games this season. Most appeared in either eight or more or four or fewer. Carter and Matthew work through some key redshirt names and what that means for the program in 2020 and beyond.
