Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 5: Defense rebounds in Scrimmage 2

August 21, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football defense bounces back in their final scrimmage of fall camp which ended with a quarterback decision looming in the near future.

If the Rice football offense won the first scrimmage, the defense delivered the equalizing blow on Saturday night. In some ways, it marked a fitting end to fall camp, which featured a fairly balanced level of play from both sides of the ball.

Rice has roughly two weeks before they open their season against USC. What did we learn from this final scrimmage and when will a starting quarterback be named? We now have a firm timeline for when that decision will be announced.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 4: Offense shines in Scrimmage 1

August 13, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football offense put its best foot forward in the first scrimmage of fall camp, scoring four touchdowns and coming close on a few other drives.

Rice football reached the halfway point of fall camp this week. capping a run of six straight practice days with their first scrimmage. The offense stole the show, piling up touchdowns and points against a Rice defense that — on this rare occasion — looked mortal. Luke McCaffrey in space can make that happen.

There was some separation on the quarterback front, a few offensive playmakers worth noting and even a few defensive standout that warranted some praise despite the tough day for their side of the ball. Altogether, we learned a lot and the team as a whole should be pleased with how things are progressing so far in camp.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 3: Assessing the Defense

August 10, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Defensive Coordinator Brian Smith answered some questions and shared his philosophy for the Rice football defense as the Owls start fall camp.

For the better part of the past two seasons, it’s been tough sledding on the injury front for the Rice football defense. Key players like Treshawn Chamberlain, George Nyakwol and De’Braylon Carroll have missed significant time. Now, they’re back and most of the players who held down the front in their place are still on campus. That’s good news for the Owls’ defense in 2022.

Defensive coordinator Brian Smith, who has had to make do with square pegs and round holes, looks to finally have his full arsenal at his disposal, and perhaps of equal importance — he has depth. How will Rice utilize that depth this season and how will they deploy their many assets on this side of the ball. Smith sat down with The Roost this week to share his plans and discuss some big-picture themes for his unit this fall.

Rice Football 2022 Season Preview: Safety

July 13, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

As part of our 2022 Rice Football Preseason Preview series, next we’ll examine the safety position and discuss the Owls’ plans for that group.

It’s been tough sledding on the back end of the Rice football secondary for some time now, although the rotating door at safety hasn’t been for lack of effort. Injuries have hammered this room hard in each of the past two years. This time around the Owls are looking as healthy as ever and they might even have some depth to go around, too. Here’s our 2022 Safety Preview.

Rice Football Recruiting: Notre Dame transfer Litchfield Ajavon commits to Owls

May 18, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The early days of summer brought reinforcements on the Rice Football recruiting front. Former Notre Dame safety Litchfield Ajavon has committed to the Owls.

The Transfer Portal continues to play a key role in Rice football recruiting, most recently affording the Owls an opportunity to add a former blue-chip recruit to their roster. After spending the last three seasons at Notre Dame, safety Litchfield Ajavon has committed to the Owls.

Ajavon was a highly sought-after 4-star recruit in the 2019 class. The No. 230-ranked player and No. 19 ranked safety in the country by 247 Sports, Ajavon received offers from the likes of Clemson, Georgia, Michigan and others before ultimately signing with the Irish.

Ajavon saw action in two games during his freshman season and four games as sophomore. He was credited with his first tackle last fall against Navy. It was at that point he opted to enter the portal where he would connect with the Owls and ultimately commit to Rice. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Since wrapping up the majority of their high school recruiting on National Signing Day, Rice has now added five transfers from the portal, most recently Jacksonville State running back Uriah West. Rutgers transfer linebacker Chris Conti was the only addition from the Power 5 level.

Litchfield was a fan favorite at Notre Dame, connecting through social media via segments called “Litch In The Field” where he went around the football facility and asked his teammates’ various questions. His conversational style and ability to provide an “inside” look at the team made him unique. The Owls certainly hope he’ll bring that candor and success, both on and off the field, when he arrives at South Main.
