September 15, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Saturday can’t get here soon enough. Rice football is eagerly awaiting another chance to get on the field after a thorough drubbing of McNeese State last weekend. This week’s opponent. Louisiana, promises to be a much tougher out.

The Owls have been hard at work to make corrections from last weekend’s missteps and implement their game plan for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Along the way there have been some shakeups within a few position groups, injuries and a few learnings to pass along prior to Week 3.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 5: Defense rebounds in Scrimmage 2

August 21, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football defense bounces back in their final scrimmage of fall camp which ended with a quarterback decision looming in the near future.

If the Rice football offense won the first scrimmage, the defense delivered the equalizing blow on Saturday night. In some ways, it marked a fitting end to fall camp, which featured a fairly balanced level of play from both sides of the ball.

Rice has roughly two weeks before they open their season against USC. What did we learn from this final scrimmage and when will a starting quarterback be named? We now have a firm timeline for when that decision will be announced.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 4: Offense shines in Scrimmage 1

August 13, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football offense put its best foot forward in the first scrimmage of fall camp, scoring four touchdowns and coming close on a few other drives.

Rice football reached the halfway point of fall camp this week. capping a run of six straight practice days with their first scrimmage. The offense stole the show, piling up touchdowns and points against a Rice defense that — on this rare occasion — looked mortal. Luke McCaffrey in space can make that happen.

There was some separation on the quarterback front, a few offensive playmakers worth noting and even a few defensive standout that warranted some praise despite the tough day for their side of the ball. Altogether, we learned a lot and the team as a whole should be pleased with how things are progressing so far in camp.

Rice Football Recruiting: 2022 DL Chibby Nwajuaku commits to Owls

May 12, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2022 Rice Football recruiting class has doubled in size, securing a big commitment from defensive lineman Chibby Nwajuaku.

Sometimes you know what you want. While the offer count for the 2022 Rice football recruiting class continues to be modest, the focus on building on areas of strength has remained a focal point of the Owls’ efforts. Rice has now doubled down in the trenches, picking up their second commitment, defensive lineman Chibby Nwajuaku.

Nwajuaku joins fellow defensive lineman Davion Carter as the initial members of the 2022 Rice football recruiting class. His addition represents the second commitment for Rice in as many months.

To earn Nwajuaku’s pledge Rice beat out offers from a dozen other programs including the ACC’s Wake Forest as well as fellow in-state conference foe UTSA. The Owls have recruited nationally under head coach Mike Bloomgren but they remain committed to bringing in the right pieces from the Lone Star State, too. They didn’t have to go far to land Nwajuaku, who played his high school ball at Cy Ranch.

With Nwajuaku and Carter in the fold, Rice boasts an elite tandem up front. They’ll one day be tasked with picking up the mantle of a series of high-end players that have come before them like current interior defenders Elijah Garcia and DeBraylon Carroll. Going from strength to strength is how programs sustain success, and it’s no mistake these two players were early targets in this cycle.

Nwajuaku can line up across the defensive front, giving opposing offenses headaches all throughout high school. At 6-foot-3, 245 pounds, he’s a menacing force off the edge that can pick up steam and drive offensive lineman back with force. He also plays with incredible poise. He knows when to watch the play develop and displays impressive closing speed after he’s diagnosed where the ball is going.
