Rice Football Recruiting: JUCO LB Desmyn Baker commits to Owls

December 16, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2021 Rice Football Recruiting class keeps getting bigger, this time adding linebacker Desmyn Baker from the JUCO ranks.

The first day of the Early Signing Period is going to end with a bang as the 2021 Rice Football Recruiting class continues to pick up steam. The Owls have added a transfer to their ranks. Junior college linebacker Desmyn Baker has committed to the Owls.

Over the past few months, Baker has garnered offers from Deion Sanders at Jackson State, Central Arkansas and now Rice. He moved quickly once the offer came in from the Owls, a trend exhibited from several of the most recent commitments.

Baker should cap off an impressive corps of linebackers in this class. The Owls already have commitments from Kenny Seymour, Aidan Siano and DJ Arkansas, all of which came back in March. The addition of Baker at a well-stocked position points to how highly the staff valued his abilities.

The JUCO connection is worth noting as well. Blaze Alldredge set a ridiculously high standard for junior college recruits at Rice. But the Owls have also hit on fellow JUCO players like Naeem Smith and Brad Rozner. The potential to build on a player who already has experience playing college ball is significant, and one the Owls’ will certainly be able to take advantage of with Baker.

Baker is a fun one to watch on film. He’s aggressive from the snap and his pursuit is relentless. He can truly move from sideline to sideline and covers a lot of ground along the way. He’s going to find the ball carrier, and when he does, he’s going to arrive with a wallop. Consistent tackling ability is a must-have trait to see the field for this defense and he doesn’t stop until he has the ballcarrier on the ground.

Tuesday night

The majority of the 2021 Rice Football recruiting class is in the boat prior to the beginning of the Early Signing Period. In most typical years, we’d have a firmer timetable of who is putting pen to paper when, but COVID-19 has impacted some of the traditional ceremonies. Players are eligible to fax in their signatures starting at 7:00 a.m. local time.

The Roost Podcast | Ep 66 – Rice Football 2020 Season Review

December 15, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2020 Rice football has come to an end. We debrief the strange season and recap the final game against UAB.

Rice football saw their season end at the hands of the divisional champion UAB Blazers last Saturday. The Owls had their chances, but couldn’t rally behind their third-string quarterback in the season finale. Carter and Matther debrief the loss and dig into what went wrong and what positives can be taken away.

Then the focus pans out to the season as a whole. How did the Owls fair compare to expectations on both sides of the ball? There was a lot of good to be found, especially considering the team played much of the season missing wide receivers, defensive backs and using multiple quarterbacks.

Rice Football: What to expect from the Early Signing Period

December 14, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

The first members of the 2021 Rice Football recruiting class will sign this week. Here’s where the Owls stand entering the Early Signing Period on Wednesday.

It’s been nine months, almost to the day, that the 2021 Rice Football Recruiting class truly started in earnest. On March 8, offensive lineman Faaeanuu Pepe committed to the Owls. He was the first of four commitments Rice picked up in the span of five days, and part of a thinning number of 2021 commits that actually stepped foot on South Main during this calendar year.

For many in this class, the virtual recruiting landscape has been the norm. That speaks volumes of the work Recruiting Director Alex Brown and his staff have done, navigating a pandemic to assemble what is currently on pace to be the highest-ranked class in Rice history. That would be a nice encore to the 2020 class, which currently holds the top spot.

Subscribers will have access to a live blog on Wednesday tracking all the developments throughout the day as well as several pieces in the coming days breaking down the class. Stay tuned. This is going to be a fun week. Not a subscriber? Join now.

Notable Week 15 results – Standings

Rice wraps up one of nation’s shortest seasons

A five-game slate came to an end Saturday for Rice football, who fell to a beat-up UAB squad at home. The Rice offense couldn’t mount a comeback on the arm of third-string quarterback Wiley Green as the Owls’ bowl hopes came to an abrupt end. Last week’s thrilling upset of a ranked Marshall team should help ease the pain. A lot can happen in the span of five games. Rice certainly proved that.

Interim Sendoff

After announcing Will Hall as their future head coach this week, Southern Miss sent off interim head coach Tim Billings with an upset win. The Golden Eagles won a shootout over FAU, taking a lead on the penultimate play of the first half and keeping it for the remainder of the contest.

UTEP’s almost upset

There were midseason debates about where this game should be played. Eventually, these two teams took the field at Apogee Stadium for what turned into quite the barnburner. North Texas wideout Jaelon Daren scored four times, racking up 173 receiving yards in the process. UTEP trailed by as many as 17 points, but fought back to make things interesting in the fourth quarter on the arms and legs of backup quarterback Calvin Brownholtz.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

C-USA Championship Game

Marshall canceled their game against Charlotte because of COVID-19 concerns, clinching the East in the process. UAB won the West by defeating Rice on the road. That sets up a battle of two one-loss conference teams in Huntington on Friday, Dec. 18 for the conference crown.

UTSA Bowl Game

By virtue of the UAB win, UTSA misses out on a conference championship game appearance by fractions of winning percentage points. Nevertheless, the impressive debut season for head coach Jeff Traylor will continue for at least one more game. UTSA will play SMU in the Frisco Bowl.

Current Bowl Schedule

Five Conference USA teams are bowl bound so far. That number should go up to at seven following the conference championship game. Here’s the current slate:

Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl – Dec. 19

UTSA vs SMU

Montgomery Bowl – Dec. 23

FAU vs Memphis

New Orleans Bowl – Dec. 23

Louisiana Tech vs Georgia Southern

Myrtle Beach Bowl – Dec. 21

North Texas vs Appalachian State

Lending Tree Bowl – Dec. 26

WKU vs Georgia State
