Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 2: Assessing the Offense

August 6, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Offensive Coordinator Marques Tuiasosopo unpacked his plans and outstanding questions for the Rice football offense as the Owls start fall camp.

On Saturday, Rice football practiced with pads for the first time during fall camp, giving the skill position players their chance to perform against real coverages and real pressure. For many, it was the opening stanza of a three-week-long interview with precious starting spots on the line. It was also the first of six consecutive practice days following which the team will host a meaningful scrimmage.

In his second season at South Main, Rice football offensive coordinator Marques Tuiasosopo is eager to make the most of every period. He was kind enough to sit down with The Roost to debrief what he’s seen so far and share expectations and key storylines he’ll be paying attention to as fall camp progresses.

Rice Football 2022 Season Preview: Running Back

August 1, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

As part of our 2022 Rice Football Preseason Preview series, next we’ll examine the running back position and discuss the Owls’ plans for that group.

Pound the rock has been the mantra of Rice football since head coach Mike Bloomgren arrived on campus. Even with that run-game-oriented mindset, the backfield has been a mixed bag. Can someone rise up and become a true bellcow back? Will a committee of specialists do the trick? Here’s our 2022 Running Back Preview.

Rice Football 2022: Early Position by position confidence levels

May 31, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Spring ball is long gone and Rice Football is preparing to turn the page toward the 2022 season. How confident should we be in each position group?

Every Rice football position group entered the spring facing a different set of questions. For some, spring was about identifying starters. For others, it was assessing the depth and determining if reinforcements were needed. Not all those questions were answered, but we did learn enough to project how confident we might be in each position group heading into the 2022 season.

April 26, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice Football offense grew a lot over the course of six weeks. Here are five things we learned from the unit this spring.

The offense had its moments in scattered practices throughout Rice football spring practices but always seemed to struggle in game-like situations. They finally broke through with a big spring game. Who stood out the most and what did we learn from this unit as a whole during the spring?

Rice Football 2022 Spring Practice Notebook 6: Running backs ramping up

April 12, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The running back room has made significant strides for Rice football this spring, thanks in part to the addition of new position coach CJ Anderson.

Many of the bigs plays of the spring have come from the running back room. Rice football brought in former Super Bowl Champion CJ Anderson to lead the room during the offseason and his presence is already being felt. This update details what he’s telling his guys and the growth (and challenges) he’s seen with the unit throughout the spring.
