2025 Rice Football Season Preview: Cornerback

July 7, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Next up in our 2025 Rice Football Season Preview: cornerback. Here’s our breakdown of the Owls’ plans for the group this season.

The corner room is going to be brand new in 2025, something Rice football hasn’t had to experience in quite some time. Fortunately, the Transfer Portal has allowed for some veteran leadership to be injected into this position group during the offseason, but that hasn’t removed all the question marks in the crucial defensive spot. How well will this new-look room adjust to so many moving parts?

Rice Football 2024: UConn Game Week Practice Report

October 24, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

It was an interesting week for Rice football as the team juggles injuries and prepares for UConn.  Here’s what we learned from the Owls at practice this week.

Injured on the final play of their game against Tulane, Rice football starting quarterback EJ Warner has been a significant question mark as the team prepares to make the trip east to take on UConn. Head coach Mike Bloomgren has issued some positive remarks about Warner’s status, but more light was shed during practice this week. And that might not be the only position with important injury-related news.

This update will touch on the good and the bad from the injury front plus some individual highlights and comments on the team the Owls are likely to trot out on Saturday. Here’s where the team stands prior to the UConn game this weekend.

August 10, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The first scrimmage of Rice Football fall camp is in the books and there’s a lot to unpack from individual standouts to intense position battles still underway.

Rice football is back on the grass and the competition is heating up. The Owls held their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday morning, pitting the offense against the defense for a couple of hours of intense back and forth. Everyone entered the fray from the first team starters to the freshman with various players on both sides of the ball hoping to make their mark and move up to the next level of the depth chart. Here’s what we learned.

Rice Football 2024 Season Preview: Roster Grid

August 7, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football has a 121-man roster entering the 2024 season. From position changes to eligibility remaining, this chart will help keep everything in order.

Keeping track of eligibility and positions can be challenging and there wasn’t one single source that had the most up-to-date information — now there is. In addition to the roster tracker and as a complement to the roster, which has been updated to account for all the final additions and changes with the start of camp, this grid tracks every Rice football player by position and classification. Position changes from last season and/or the spring are also detailed below.

Rice Football Recruiting: Breaking Down the 2024 Signees – Defense

February 7, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 Rice Football Recruiting class includes several hand-picked impact players on defense. Here’s how that side of the ball stacks up.

With the addition of 10 players on National Signing Day, the 2024 Rice football recruiting class has grown to 23 players. Of those players, 16 are current high school seniors and nine play on the defensive side of the ball plus one specialist.

This group now includes walk-on players in addition to scholarship athletes, but as head coach Mike Bloomgren was quick to point out, “All these kids are suited to come in here, play college football and compete and help the Owls.” We’ve gone position by position breaking down each of the new Owls and how they’ll help the program on the field.
