Episode 7 Notes

  • News and notes — The pick’em challenge is gaining steam, but we haven’t had a perfect week from anyone … yet. Don’t miss your chance to play along and compete for some end of season prizes.
  • Breaking down the Wake Forest game — Starting with the quarterback position and working all the way to the secondary, there was a lot to work through from the Owls’ second Friday night affair. What happened to the running game? After giving up 41 points, should we be concerned or encouraged by the play of the Rice secondary?
  • The formula for a Texas-sized upset — Sam, from the Scott and Holman Podcast visits and talked about the Houston Cougars’ 2016 upset of Top 10 Oklahoma. What did the Cougars do on that day (with Tom Herman at the helm) that enabled them to shock the college football world and knock off the Sooners? Can the Owls take away some key learnings?
  • Previewing the Texas game — The LSU game provided some meaningful data points about the Longhorns current team. Rice should have a few key areas of advantage, but there’s no doubt this will be the Owls’ toughest tests yet. How does potential starting quarterback Tom Stewart fit into the mix?

  • Breaking down the Army game — Where does this game fit in the realm of “moral victories”? More importantly, we talk through which aspects of the Owls performance were encouraging and sustainable. What questions still remain for Week 2 and what solutions are there to some of the Owls early struggles?
  • Previewing the Wake Forest game — Wake is going to run a lot more plays and try to attack the Owls down the field. Can the same physicality Rice employed against Army translate to an opponent that is going to play this fast? What does the Rice offense need to adjust to keep pace?

Give a listen to Episode 4 below.

Episode 4 Notes

  • Defensive line — Despite losing two important starters at the position to the Transfer Portal, there’s plenty of ammo returning in 2019. That includes true freshman De’Braylon Carroll who could force his way onto the field sooner rather than later.
  • Linebacker — The tandem of Blaze Alldredge and Antonio Montero is going to be special, but the depth behind them is equally exciting.
  • Safety — JUCO transfer Naeem Smith and a few experienced hands in Prudy Calderon, Treshawn Chamberlain and George Nyakwol make this another strong spot.
  • Corner — Redshirt freshman Andrew Bird has locked down a starting spot, but the rest of the depth chart is fluid. Could a freshman force their way into the mix here?
  • Carter and Matthew each give a potential defensive MVP and a sleeper to watch for in the 2019 season

The Roost Podcast | Episode 3 – 2019 Rice Football special teams preview

August 16, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

The Roost Podcast is on to Episode 3 where your hosts Carter and Matthew walk through the Rice Football special teams and interview special guest Jack Fox.

We’re now two-thirds of the way through the Rice football roster. In the first two episodes, we hit on the Owls’ schedule and the offensive personnel. This week we talked through the special teams units with a guest appearance from one of the Owls’ most impressive specialists, Jack Fox. Next week we’ll turn out attention to the defense. Until then, check out the show.

Give a listen to Episode 3 below.

Episode 3 Notes

  • Punters  — With Jack Fox in the NFL, grad transfer Adam Nunez and senior Chris Barnes are battling for the starting punter spot. Could they both play a role this season?
  • Kickers — It’s relatively early in fall camp. Has either Zach Hoban or Will Harrison done enough to separate themselves?
  • Long snapper — It’s probably worth pointing out that a solid minute was devoted to Rice football’s long snapper, Cam Riddle.
  • Returners — Several names are in the mix to return kicks this year, but the punt job remains Austin Trammell’s. Both units have the pieces to take steps forward in 2019.
  • Owls in the NFL – Following the conversation with Jack, we take a look at some of the former Rice Football stars playing in the NFL. Kudos to Austin Walter for a strong debut with the San Francisco 49ers.
