The Roost Podcast | Ep 109 – Rice Football spring practice closing thoughts

April 21, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football has wrapped up its spring practices. Did the Owls get better or are we riding a post-spring high? We discuss in this week’s episode.

Spring practice is in the rear view mirror, giving us a few months before we see Rice football on the field again. But before the offseason arrives in earnest, Carter and Matthew sit down to talk through the spring. From our surprises to concerns, we evaluate what we learned over the course of the last six weeks and discuss what’s next for the Owls on the field.

2022 Rice Football Spring Practice | True or False

Rather than rehash previous discussion points, we turned our spring practice recap into a game of true or false, as we tried to get to the bottom of several key areas of the Rice football team after the conclusion of spring practices.

True or False…

  • … we’re more confident in Rice football now than we were six weeks ago
  • … the Rice defensive line will be a Top 3 unit in Conference USA
  • … Luke McCaffrey will be an All-Conference player
  • … Rice football has a definitive answer at quarterback
  • … The Rice offense is going to be better in 2022
  • … At least one spring “discovery” will become an impact player this fall
  • … Rice has enough depth

The Roost Podcast | Ep 108 – Rice Football spring practice and Naeem Smith

April 7, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football continues its spring practices as Owls prep for their NFL futures. We talk both with former Rice safety Naeem Smith.

Rice football hosted its Pro Day this past week, featuring five now former players who went through various drills in front of a host of NFL scouts. One of those Owls working out was Naeem Smith, a multi-year starting safety who is hoping for a chance at the next level. We caught up with Smith on this week’s episode of the podcast to talk about his journey to Rice, his pro aspirations and more.

The Roost Podcast | Ep 107 – Rice Football spring practice and JP Heath

March 25, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football returned to the field for spring practices this week. We react to the latest news and meander through Rice Athletics with JP Heath.

The second week of Rice football spring practice offers plenty to discuss, as well as does some unfortunate transfer news that broke shortly after our last podcast. Carter and Matthew dive into that before stepping back to welcome the first guest of the spring, Rice Owls Voice JP Heath.

Finally free from pulling double-duty between Rice basketball and Rice baseball, JP joins us to discuss the end of the men’s basketball season and share some early reactions from the beginning of the Jose Cruz Jr. era at Reckling Park.

The Roost Podcast | Ep 106 – Pressing questions for Rice Football this spring

March 10, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football spring practices kicked off this week. As the Owls hit the grass, this episode focuses on what we want to see from the team this spring.

Spring camp kicked off on Tuesday, March 8. Rice football was back on the field.
