Rice Women’s Basketball comes up just short in 4OT game at Charlotte

January 22, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice women’s basketball came harrowingly close to their first C-USA victory season on Saturday, falling in quadruple overtime on the road at Charlotte.

From the moment the ball was tipped, Rice women’s basketball traded blows with Charlotte from Saturday afternoon into the early evening. The 49ers took an early advantage, leading 16-10 at the end of the first quarter. The shots didn’t seem to be falling for Rice at the start of the contest, but the team stayed composed, leaning on a strong defensive performance to erase the early deficit and go into halftime tied.

Charlotte shot 43.8 percent from the field in the first quarter. In the second Rice held the home team to just two field goals and six total points. Rice trailed for the majority of that time, leading by one point for 12 seconds before Charlotte knocked down a free throw in the final seconds before the halftime break.

Last Time Out: Rice Women’s Basketball fizzles late, falls to Old Dominion

It was all Charlotte at the onset of the third quarter. The 49ers came out firing, jumping out to an 11-point lead thanks to a 16-6 run to start the second half. Rather than fold, the Owls dug deep and went on a 12-5 run of their own to put themselves in striking distance entering the fourth. From there, Rice closed the gap and Haylee Swayze gave Rice their first lead of the game on a jumper with 3:42 to go in the fourth quarter.

Charlotte would tie it up and send the game to overtime. Rice took the lead, then Charlotte hit a runner at the buzzer to force double overtime. Rice took the lead, then Charlotte hit a triple in the final seconds to force a third extra period. The Owls missed what would have been the game-winner at the close of the third overtime before Charlotte was able to wrestle the game away in the fourth and final overtime period.

Player Spotlight | Ashlee Austin

Ashlee Austin was one of the most productive scorers in Conference USA before the Owls almost month-long hiatus in late December. Before that break, Austin was averaging 18.1 points per game. In the four games following, she averaged 7.3 points per game. That’s part of what made her 30 point outburst on Saturday so impactful.

Austin was 10-0f-19 from the field, tallying 17 of those 30 points in regulation before a series of key buckets in overtime. In double overtime, it was Austin who put Rice ahead with less than two minutes to play. She added a pair of shots in the third overtime as the Owls traded blows with the 49ers. Finally, she rounded out her final box score with seven rebounds and two assists.

Stat Corner | Five

Five different Owls played more than 40 minutes to earn the win against Charlotte, that includes Destiny Jackson who fouled out of the game. Short benches mean more minutes for everyone, including a brief appearance from Savannah May, a student manager who was added to the roster on Friday the day before the game.

Stretching players that thin can’t be the recipe every outing, but with a five-day break looming and a real chance to earn the team’s first conference win of the year, everything was on the table. If recent weeks are any indication, the starting five are going to have to carry a heavy load the rest of the way.

“Tough Cards”: Rice Women’s Basketball forced to deal with extremely thin roster

January 19, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice women’s basketball has endured a challenging month and the road ahead promises to be equally grueling, in part because of the limitations of an extremely thin roster.

Head coach Lindsay Edmonds isn’t one to make excuses, but she couldn’t avoid discussing the state of Rice women’s basketball’s current roster following a tough home loss to Western Kentucky last week. The game was the first home contest for the Owls since December 11, more than a month ago. Part of the reason for the lengthy delay was the sheer quantity (or lack thereof) of bodies the program had available to put on the court.

Rice women’s basketball faces severe depth issues, further amplified by two recent injuries. Alexis Stover tore her ACL and had surgery last week. She will miss the remainder of the season. Katelyn Crosthwait will have surgery on her meniscus this week and will be out for at least four weeks. There’s some optimism she’ll be able to return by late February or early March. At a minimum, she’ll miss the majority of the Owls’ remaining season.

Rice Basketball outshoots Marshall with career-night from Carl Pierre

January 16, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice basketball outshot Marshall behind a career-night from Carl Pierre, weathering a late run before pulling away late.

From start to finish, Rice basketball found ways to put the ball in the basket, typically from long range. The Owls had struggled to find a rhythm from three in recent games but snapped out of that funk with an emphatic barrage of triples to take down Marshall on the road.

Marshall took an early 4-3 lead but Rice would take over from there. Travis Evee and Carl Pierre would combine to hit 11 of the Owls’ 12 three-pointers, pushing the Rice lead to double-digits just after the midpoint of the first half.

Last Time Out: Rice Basketball falters down the stretch at WKU

Marshall wouldn’t go quietly. The Thundering Herd cut the Owls’ 12-point advantage midway through the second half to a 58-58 tie with 8:35 to play. Rice didn’t panic. A layup from Max Fiedler followed by a triplet of threes from Evee and Pierre gave Rice a fresh lead before the Owls pushed it back to double-digits with under two minutes to play.

“We weren’t perfect,” head coach Scott Pera. “It’s not always going to be perfect. But every time they made a run, we responded.”

The win moves Rice to 3-2 in conference play, trailing division leader Louisiana Tech by two games.

Player Spotlight | Carl Pierre

Pierre was lights out on Saturday, scoring a career-high 30 points and tying the school record with eight made three-pointers in the game. He always seemed to have an answer to a Marshall run, keeping the Owls at least one step ahead throughout the duration of the contest.

Stat Corner | Sharpshooters

Rice basketball combined two aspects of their three-point shooting game they hadn’t been able to sync up in quite some time. They hit more than eight threes for the first time since December 16 against Incarnate Word and topped 50 percent from three for the first time since December 4 against Jarvis Christian. The Owls would have happily taken the efficiency or the quantity. Getting both in the same game meant trouble for Marshall.

According to Rice, this marks the first time Rice has made at least 60 percent of its three-pointers in a game since Nov. 19, 2016 at Omaha.

Rice Football Recruiting: Owls target o-line in latest run of offers

January 9, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Transfer Portal has been a focal point of Rice football recruiting in recent weeks, including a flurry of offers on the offensive line.

The 2022 Rice Football recruiting class got off to a great start during the early signing period, but there’s more work to do before the class is completed later this spring. For the time being, the Transfer Portal has taken center stage. Rice has been active in recent weeks, shifting their focus to transfer targets with much of their high school contingent now signed.

It only takes a brief look at the Owls’ most recent offer list to identify the current priority: offensive line.  The five most recent offers for the upcoming 2022 Rice Football recruiting class have all come at that position, including four transfer targets and one high school senior.

“I don’t remember one bigger than this”: Rice basketball upsets UAB

January 8, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice basketball upset conference favorite UAB at home on Saturday, earning the marquee win of head coach Scott Pera’s tenure to date.

Ranked No. 38 in the NET rankings and No. 48 in KenPom, UAB entered Tudor Fieldhouse on Saturday as the overwhelming favorites in Conference USA. They left with a loss at the hands of a now surging Rice basketball squad that has won two in a row at home.

When asked where the win ranked among the top moments of his tenure, Rice basketball head coach Scott Pera formed his hand into a thumbs up and raised it higher and higher until it left the screen of the Zoom call and continued to climb. “The Marshall win last year was tremendous. We’ve had some other big ones here too,” he said with a grin,” but I don’t remember one bigger than this.”

Wins like that don’t come easy. UAB led Rice by five points at halftime. The Blazers were shooting a staggering 60 percent from the field at that point and had seemed very much like the same team that had knocked Rice out of the conference tournament last March.

Pera and his team persevered. The fifth-year headman gave a nod to his assistant coaches that helped develop the game plan and reinforced to his team it would work.

“They never wavered in their belief that they can win the game. And that’s where it started,” he said. “If you don’t believe, you have no chance. And we believed.”

More: Rice Basketball grinds out win over Middle Tennessee

The Owls’ belief was tested early in the second half. UAB opened up a 10 point lead, but just when it seemed like the Blazers might pull away, the Owls’ shots started to fall. Travis Evee scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half. Carl Pierre contributed 13 of his 19 points after the break. Likewise, Mylyjael Poteat scored 14 of his 18 in the final 20 minutes.

Rice basketball also doubled down on their early control of the glass. They whipped the Blazers on the boards, outrebounding their foes 38-27. The 10 point lead by the visitors slowly dwindled. Pierre connected on a triple with 4:33 to put Rice in front for good before Evee iced the game with eight free throws in the final minute.

Player Spotlight | Mylyjael Poteat

Poteat battled injuries last season but was able to play a modest role down the stretch. He’s continued to grow this year, flashing here and there, but never truly becoming a consistent fixture on the floor, at least not until Saturday.

“Tonight, he was the difference. There’s no question about it. He was tremendous,” coach Pera said following the win. He praised Poteat’s renewed work ethic and credited his willingness to put in the extra work that paid off for Rice in this game. Poteat’s 18 points were a career-high. He also added seven rebounds.

Stat Corner | Win inside

The usual three-point-happy Owls were more balanced against the Blazers, repeating echoing traces of an inside-first mentality that helped propel them to a win over MTSU two days prior. UAB outscored Rice in the pain 42-34, but the 34 point total is night and day different from the 18 points in the paint they scored against Middle Tennessee or the 16 they mustered against North Texas.

Rice basketball made eight threes against UAB, tying the second-lowest total they’d had in a winning performance this year. Two games aren’t quite enough for a trend, but it’s a notable growth moment for a team that has lived and died by the three for so long.

Rice out physical-ed UAB in this game. They won on the boards. They found success in the paint. And most importantly. they played sound defense in key moments and hit their free throws. In every way, this looked like a complete basketball team on Saturday.

Rice basketball will get a few extra days to enjoy this win. Their next tip doesn’t come until Thursday night when they kick off road trip against Western Kentucky before heading to Marshall on Saturday.
