Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 4: Offense shines in Scrimmage 1

August 13, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football offense put its best foot forward in the first scrimmage of fall camp, scoring four touchdowns and coming close on a few other drives.

Rice football reached the halfway point of fall camp this week. capping a run of six straight practice days with their first scrimmage. The offense stole the show, piling up touchdowns and points against a Rice defense that — on this rare occasion — looked mortal. Luke McCaffrey in space can make that happen.

There was some separation on the quarterback front, a few offensive playmakers worth noting and even a few defensive standout that warranted some praise despite the tough day for their side of the ball. Altogether, we learned a lot and the team as a whole should be pleased with how things are progressing so far in camp.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 3: Assessing the Defense

August 10, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Defensive Coordinator Brian Smith answered some questions and shared his philosophy for the Rice football defense as the Owls start fall camp.

For the better part of the past two seasons, it’s been tough sledding on the injury front for the Rice football defense. Key players like Treshawn Chamberlain, George Nyakwol and De’Braylon Carroll have missed significant time. Now, they’re back and most of the players who held down the front in their place are still on campus. That’s good news for the Owls’ defense in 2022.

Defensive coordinator Brian Smith, who has had to make do with square pegs and round holes, looks to finally have his full arsenal at his disposal, and perhaps of equal importance — he has depth. How will Rice utilize that depth this season and how will they deploy their many assets on this side of the ball. Smith sat down with The Roost this week to share his plans and discuss some big-picture themes for his unit this fall.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 2: Assessing the Offense

August 6, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Offensive Coordinator Marques Tuiasosopo unpacked his plans and outstanding questions for the Rice football offense as the Owls start fall camp.

On Saturday, Rice football practiced with pads for the first time during fall camp, giving the skill position players their chance to perform against real coverages and real pressure. For many, it was the opening stanza of a three-week-long interview with precious starting spots on the line. It was also the first of six consecutive practice days following which the team will host a meaningful scrimmage.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 1: Depth Chart

August 3, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The first Rice football depth chart of the fall camp has been released and there’s a lot to discuss as the run-up to the season begins.

At the end of the day, depth charts aren’t nearly as important as we’d like to make the out to be. Coaches don’t spend as much time pouring over the particulars as one might initially think. The first Rice football depth chart of fall camp is no different. It’s a guideline and a starting point for what promises to be several weeks of interesting developments.

To that end, it’s always instrumental to begin the exercise by looking at which faces are new to the roster, who isn’t listed at all and which notable changes have occurred since the last iteration was published. This update will go through all of those particulars and highlight a few key position battles to keep an eye on as Rice football opens fall camp.

Rice Football 2022: Concerns after spring ball? — Patreon Q&A

April 27, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

It wasn’t all sunshine and roses for Rice football this spring. The April 2022 Patreon Q&A focuses on the concerns outstanding after spring practices.

It’s almost impossible to leave the spring without feeling some sort of optimism regarding the team as a whole. This year’s Rice football spring sessions were no different. And while much has been written to this point about what went right this spring, it also seems prudent to address the questions regarding what I saw that didn’t fill me with hope.
