The Roost Podcast | Ep. 17 – 2019 Middle Tennessee Preview

November 14, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

Matthew previews Rice Football vs Middle Tennessee in Week 12 and recaps a busy week in Rice Athletics as the football team was on bye.

The bye week was a busy one for Rice Football and the Owls are still on their hunt for their first win. An extra week of prep work and time to get everyone healthy should aid their efforts. Stay tuned for a closer look at the matchups on both sides of the ball and an interview with Eric Henry of Underdog Dynasty in this week’s show.

Episode 17 Notes

  • News and notes —  Rice Basketball has been busy. The men started the season 3-1 with the women starting 2-0 prior to an upset at the hands of SMU (completed after recording). More on how both teams have looked so far and some big-picture thoughts on their respective seasons.
  • Middle Tennessee Preview — The Blue Raiders are led by quarterback Asher O’Hara, one of the most talented athletes Rice has faced at the quarterback position this season. MTSU’s commitment to the ground game has a similar look and feel to a team like Army, which fits well with the Owls’ strengths. How the Rice offense responds, and who is healthy enough to play quarterback, are also brought into focus.
  • Eric Henry Interview — As someone who spends his days looking at the broader scope of Conference USA, Eric was able to give a great overview of where the conference stands entering the final weeks of the season. We talked championship game scenarios, surprising teams and results and, of course, the upcoming matchup between Rice and Middle Tennessee.

The Roost Podcast | Ep. 16 – 2019 Marshall Review

November 7, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

With the second open weekend of the season looming, Carter and Matthew discuss the emergence of JoVoni Johnson and Rice Football vs Marshall in Week 10.

Despite only finishing with seven points, the Rice football offense had some sparks against Marshall during their Homecoming weekend. Follow along with the Owls’ current quarterback predicament, a still stingy defense and another busy week on South Main in this week’s episode.

Episode 16 Notes

  • News and notes —  Rice Basketball is under way with the women and men opening their season. We touch on that briefly as well as a shout out to the Owls’ undefeated-in-conference-play and national ranked volleyball team who host Western Kentucky on Sunday.
  • Marshall Review — The new-look offense sure felt a lot different than previous iterations on the Owls’ efforts on that side of the ball. Juma Otoviano plus JoVoni Johnson was a dangerous combination, unfortunately one which was ended prematurely when Johnson left the game with injury. And of course, shoutouts to a constantly tenacious defense. Saturday featured big days from Antonio Montero, Blaze Alldredge, Naeem Smith and Garrett Grammer.
  • The redshirt dilemma — There is a very real scenario where both Johnson and grad transfer quarterback Tom Stewart are healthy for the Owls’ upcoming game against Middle Tennesse. Johnson has one game remaining to preserve his redshirt. Will Rice preserve his eligibility? Or will they do everything they can to win now? What’s the right answer? Carter and Matthew discuss.

The Roost Podcast | Ep. 15 – 2019 Southern Miss Review, Marshall Preview

October 31, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

Homecoming is here for Rice Football as they prepare for Marshall in Week 10. Carter and Matthew preview that game and take one last look at Southern Miss.

It was another mixed bag for Rice football this past weekend against Southern Miss. The Owls looked fantastic on defense and woeful on offense. They’ll have plenty of work to do before their upcoming game, homecoming against Marshall. Carter and Matthew work through all of that in this week’s episode.

Episode 15 Notes

  • News and notes —  Rice Men’s Basketball starts up on Oct. 31. The women’s basketball team follows on Nov. 5. Make sure to check out our interview with Denver Broncos’ offensive lineman Calvin Anderson on a special edition of The Roost Podcast.
  • Southern Miss Review — Another extremely poorly timed turnover turned this game quickly. We hit on the changes the offense is making and the options at quarterback. From there, we discuss the rise of the Rice defense and detail how they’ve gotten so good so quickly.
  • Marshall Preview — Marshall is going to try and match the Owls’ physicality on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Isaiah Green’s play has been good this year, but he hasn’t taken the sophomore leap many had hoped he would. The Rice offense keeping pace with Green and Co. will be crucial to how this game goes. More importantly, can the Owls score enough points on offense to support their elite-level defense?

The Roost Podcast | Ep 14 – Special interview with Calvin Anderson

October 25, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

Former Rice football offensive lineman Calvin Anderson stopped by The Roost Podcast for a special interview with Matthew and Carter.

Despite the school’s smaller enrollment numbers, Rice Football has continued to churn out NFL talent. The Owls have several players in the NFL, CFL and XFL and should have more in the way in the coming years.

Current Denver Broncos offensive lineman Calvin Anderson, who recently made his home at South Main before stops in Austin and a few NFL practice squads, knows how crazy that journey can be first hand. Join us and Calvin as we talk about life in the NFL, Rubik’s cubes and what it’s like to practice against Von Miller in this special edition of The Roost Podcast.

Don’t miss our Southern Miss preview

This is the second podcast we’ve put out this week. We opted to split the show up instead of putting together a longer single show. Be sure to give the UTSA recap and Southern Miss preview show a listen as well. In that episode we work through the fallout of another heartbreaking loss and discuss what things Rice football needs to do going forward to find the breakthrough they’ve been searching for all season. Should Owls fans have hope? We think so.

The Roost Podcast | Ep. 13 – 2019 UTSA Review, Southern Miss Preview

October 24, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football must regroup and move on after a tough loss to UTSA. Carter and Matthew debrief the game and preview the Owls’ next opponent: Southern Miss.

The most recent Rice football outing produced results that were hard to swallow. But, as they say, the show must go on. There’s plenty of things to break down from the UTSA game. We start there and move on to the Owls’ upcoming matchup with Southern Miss.

Episode 13 Notes

  • News and notes —  Rice Men’s Basketball starts up on Oct. 31. Anthony Rendon is crushing it in the world series. Stay tuned for a special podcast dropping tomorrow with a guest Rice fans will enjoy.
  • UTSA Review — Turnovers have become a serious problem for the Owls and getting to the passer remains an issue as well. On the plus side, Bradley Rozner is emerging as a go-to guy and Blaze Alldredge continues to make play after play.
  • Previewing the Southern Miss game — Jack Abraham and the Southern Miss offense are going to pose a big challenge for the Rice defense. The Owls have been improved against the pass this season, but they’re going to have to stay disciplined for a full sixty minutes to contain one of the most lethal units in C-USA. On the other side of the ball, Rice should find some of their success.
