Rice Football 2019: Owls in the NFL Week 8 Update

Rice Football products Chris Boswell and Vance McDonald led the way for NFL Owls in Week 8 with a Monday Night Football victory.

There are former Rice football players are scattered across the NFL. Stay tuned each week for their game results and notables from each player.

Week 8 results

Colts 15 – Broncos 13 (Anderson, Callahan)
Cowboys (Covington) – BYE WEEK
Eagles 31 (Sendejo)
– Bills 13
Seahawks 27 (Ellerbee, Willson) – Falcons 20
Steelers 27 (Boswell, McDonald) – Dolphins 14
Texans 27 (Gaines) – Raiders 24

Calvin Anderson, OT, Broncos

Anderson has yet to make an appearance with the Broncos since being signed off the Jets practice squad. He was inactive for the Broncos’ Week 8 game against the Colts. The Broncos host the Browns in Week 9.

Bryce Callahan, CB, Broncos

Callahan was inactive for the Broncos’ Week 8 game against the Colts. He has yet to make an appearance for the team this season. The Broncos host the Browns in Week 9.

Christian Covington, DE, Cowboys

Covington and the Cowboys had a bye in Week 8. The Cowboys travel to the Giants for Monday Night Football in Week 9.

Andrew Sendejo, Saf, Eagles

Sendejo registered a pair of tackles for the Eagles in their Week 8 win over the Bills. The Eagles host Bears in Week 9.

Emmanuel Ellerbee, LB, Seahawks

Ellerbee was placed injured reserve prior to the start of the season. The Seahawks host the Bucs in Week 9.

Luke Willson, TE, Seahawks

Willson hauled in his lone target from Russell Wilson in Week 8, taking it seven yards on the second play of the game as part of the Seahawks first scoring drive. The Seahawks host the Bucs in Week 9.

Chris Boswell, K, Steelers

Perfect no more, Boswell watched his first missed field goal sail right of the posts on a 54-yard attempt on Monday Night Football against the Dolphins. He redeemed himself by making two other kicks, including a long of 42 yards and three extra point tries. The Steelers travel to the Colts in Week 9.

Vance McDonald, TE, Steelers

McDonald caught three passes for 19 yards on Monday Night Football. That marks the third time this season he’s caught at least three passes. The Steelers travel to the Colts in Week 9.

Phillip Gaines, CB, Texans

Gaines underwent surgery last week for a severe high ankle sprain suffered in the Texans Week 8 game with the Colts. He was placed on injured reserve with an estimated recovery time of five months. His season is over. The Texans travel to London to play the Jaguars in Week 9.

Christian Covington’s Cowboys picked up a big win in a relative quiet week for Rice Football products in the NFL. Here’s how the NFL Owls fared in Week 7.

There are former Rice football players are scattered across the NFL. Stay tuned each week for their game results and notables from each player.

Week 7 results

Chiefs 30 – Broncos 6 (Callahan, Anderson)
Cowboys 37 (Covington) – Eagles 10 (Sendejo)
Ravens 30 – Seahawks 16 (Ellerbee, Willson)
Steelers (Boswell, McDonald) – BYE WEEK
Colts 30 – Texans 23 (Gaines)

Calvin Anderson, OT, Broncos

Anderson has yet to make an appearance with the Broncos since being signed off the Jets practice squad a few weeks ago. He was inactive for the Broncos’ Week 7 game against the Chiefs. The Broncos travel to the Colts in Week 8.

Bryce Callahan, CB, Broncos

Callahan was inactive for the Broncos’ Week 7 game against the Chiefs. He has yet to make an appearance for the team this season. The Broncos travel to the Colts in Week 8.

Christian Covington, DE, Cowboys

Covington did not see action in the Cowboys’ Week 7 win over the Eagles on Sunday Night Football. The Cowboys have a bye in Week 8.

Andrew Sendejo, Saf, Eagles

Sendejo picked up three tackles, all solo, in the Eagles Week 7 loss to the Cowboys. The Eagles host the Bills in Week 8.

Emmanuel Ellerbee, LB, Seahawks

Ellerbee was placed injured reserve prior to the start of the season. The Seahawks visit the Falcons in Week 8.

Luke Willson, TE, Seahawks

Willson was held without a catch on Sunday, receiving only one target from quarterback Russel Wilson in the Seahawks loss to the Ravens. The Seahawks visit the Falcons in Week 8.

Chris Boswell, K, Steelers

Boswell and the Steelers were on bye in Week 7. The Steelers host the Dolphins on Monday Night Football in Week 8.

Vance McDonald, TE, Steelers

McDonald and the Steelers were on bye in Week 7. The Steelers host the Dolphins on Monday Night Football in Week 8.

Phillip Gaines, CB, Texans

Gaines was in the midst of a productive game for the Texans against the Colts with seven tackles and one pass defended when he was injured. He was carted off the field after a collision and did not return to the game. Early reports are calling it a sprained ankle with no fracture revealed by x-rays. He will undergo an MRI on Monday. The Texans host the Raiders in Week 8.

Vikings 38 – Eagles 20 (Sendejo)
Jets 24 – Cowboys 22 (Covington)
Broncos 16 (Callahan, Anderson) – Titans 0
Seahawks 32 (Ellerbee, Willson) – Browns 28
Steelers 24 (Boswell, McDonald) – Chargers 17

Calvin Anderson, OT, Broncos

Anderson was recently signed from the Jets’ practice squad to the Broncos 53 man roster this week. He has been inactive for both of Denver’s games since he was signed, including Sunday’s shutout win over the Titans. The Broncos host the Chiefs on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.

Chris Boswell, K, Steelers

Boswell was only asked to attempt one field goal on Sunday. He knocked through the 20-yarder with ease, also converting each of three extra-point attempts. He remains perfect on the season with 11 successful field goals and 12 successful extra points. The Steelers are on bye in Week 7.

Bryce Callahan, CB, Broncos

Callahan was inactive for the Broncos’ Week 6 game against the Titans. He has yet to make an appearance for the team this season. The Broncos host the Chiefs on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.

Christian Covington, DE, Cowboys

Covington had one tackle in the Cowboys’ Week 6 loss to the Jets. The Cowboys host the Eagles on Sunday Night Football in Week 7.

Emmanuel Ellerbee, LB, Seahawks

Ellerbee was placed injured reserve prior to the start of the season. The Seahawks host the Ravens in Week 7.

Phillip Gaines, CB, Texans

Gaines had one pass defended and tied for the team lead with three solo tackles in the Texans’ Week 6 victory over the Chiefs. The Texans travel to the Colts in Week 7.

Vance McDonald, TE, Steelers

McDonald caught his lone target of the night against the Chargers for five yards. With backup quarterback Devlin Hodgers under center, no Steelers receiver other than running back James Connor caught more than two passes. The Steelers are on bye in Week 7.

Andrew Sendejo, Saf, Eagles

Sendejo had three tackles in the Eagles’ Week 6 loss to the Vikings. He also had one pass defended and this acrobatic interception.

The Eagles visit the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in Week 7.

Austin Walter, RB, Giants

Promote from the practice squad prior to their Week 6 game against the Patriots, Walter saw his first regular season snap on Thursday Night Football. The Giants host the Cardinals in Week 7.

Luke Willson, TE, Seahawks

Willson had two receptions for 16 yards with a long of 11 yards in the Seahawks’ Week 6 victory over the Browns. The Seahawks host the Ravens in Week 7.

Calvin Anderson, OT, Broncos

Anderson was signed from the Jets’ practice squad to the Broncos 53 man roster this week. He was inactive for his first game, a win over the Chargers. The Broncos host the Titans in Week 6.

Chris Boswell, K, Steelers

Boswell stayed perfect on the season (10-for-10), converting three field goals and two extra points for the Steelers against the Ravens. The Steelers travel to the Chargers for Sunday Night Football in Week 6.

Bryce Callahan, CB, Broncos

Callahan was inactive for the Broncos’ Week 5 game with the Chargers. He has yet to make an appearance for the team this season. The Broncos host the Titans in Week 6.

Christian Covington, DE, Cowboys

Covington led the Cowboys with two tackles for a loss against the Packers. He finished the game with three total tackles. The Cowboys travel to the Jets in Week 6.

Emmanuel Ellerbee, LB, Seahawks

Ellerbee was placed injured reserve prior to the start of the season. The Seahawks travel to the Browns in Week 6.

Vance McDonald, TE, Steelers

A game time decision on Sunday morning, McDonald was active and involved during the Steelers Week 5 game with the Ravens. He hauled in all three of his targets for 34 yards. The Steelers travel to the Chargers for Sunday Night Football in Week 6.

Andrew Sendejo, Saf, Eagles

Sendejo didn’t register any stats against the Jets in Week 5. The Eagles travel to the Vikings in Week 6.

Phillip Gaines, CB, Texans

In his third game of action, Gaines registered his first tackle for the Texans after signing with the team on Sept. 10. The Texans travel to the Chiefs in Week 6.

Former Rice football Luke Wilson made his return to the field on Sunday and helped the Seahawks win. Here’s how other NFL Owls fared in Week 4.

Chris Boswell, K, Steelers

Boswell remains perfect on the season. He connected on three extra points and a pair of field goals (including a long of 49 yards) on Monday Night Football against the Bengals. The Steelers host the Ravens in Week 5.

Bryce Callahan, CB, Broncos

Callahan was inactive for the Broncos’ Week 4 game with the Jaguars. He’s still waiting to make his 2019 debut with the team. The Broncos visit the Chargers in Week 5.

Christian Covington, DE, Cowboys

Covington picked up two tackles (one solo) against the Saints on Sunday Night Football. The Cowboys host the Packers in Week 5.

Emmanuel Ellerbee, LB, Seahawks

Ellerbee was placed injured reserve prior to the start of the season. The Seahawks host the Rams in Week 5.

Phillip Gaines, CB, Texans

Gaines made his first tackle as a Houston Texan on Sunday, finishing with two tackles (one for a loss) in the loss to the Panthers. The Texans host the Falcons in Week 5.

Vance McDonald, TE, Steelers

McDonald was inactive against the Bengals with a shoulder injury. The Steelers host the Ravens in Week 5.

Andrew Sendejo, Saf, Eagles

Sendejo finished second on the team in tackles in the Eagles’ Thursday night win over the Packers. He had one tackle for a loss and a pass break up. The Eagles host the Jets in Week 5.

Luke Willson, TE, Seahawks

Willson signed with the Seahawks last week and made his mark on the field immediately. In his first action of the year, Willson grabbed two balls for 26 yards including a long reception of 17 yards. The Seahawks host the Rams in Week 5.
