April 14, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

A veteran Rice football defense showcased plenty of up-and-coming talent. Here’s what we learned from that side of the ball during spring practices.

November 16, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football is in “playoff mode” as they visit Charlotte, two wins away from six with two games to go. Here’s what we learned from the Owls at practice this week.

There was definitely an extra dose of intensity at Rice football practices this week. The Owls said all the right things and seemingly did all the right things in preparation for Charlotte, even as they waded through continued uncertainty at quarterback and a few other key positions.

Rice Football 2023 : Takeaways from Fall Camp Scrimmage 1

August 12, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The first scrimmage of Rice football fall camp is in the books and the defense came to play. What went right for that unit and what can the offense improve?

Rice football head coach Mike Bloomgren summed it up rather well in his comments following the Owls’ 10th fall camp practice. “I’ve done this too long to be surprised that the defense is ahead at scrimmage number one,” he remarked, going on to reiterate his confidence in the offense and the growth of the team as a whole.

This practice report will dig into what the defense did well as well as identify some of the key problems the offense had. There’s a lot to improve before Rice football hosts its second scrimmage next week.

Despite coming out of the wrong side according to the final score in the 2023 Rice Football Blue and Gray Game, the defense had a largely positive spring. They asserted their will in the prior two scrimmages and made plenty of noise along the way, but they have questions still to be answered as spring winds down.
