Rice Football 2024 Spring Practice Notebook 5: Scrimmage 2

April 5, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The defense punched back in the second scrimmage of Rice football spring practices, dominating the afternoon after the offense started the week strong.

On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Rice football defense roared back to life in the second scrimmage of spring practices, emphatically declaring their preeminence against the offenses’ best. In the words of head coach Mike Bloomgren, it was “complete domination to start” with the offense not really showing much life until later in the session. Here are the standouts, impact plays, stat lines and more from Scrimmage 2:

Rice Football 2024 Spring Practice Notebook 4: Halfway Point Observations

March 28, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football is halfway done with spring practices and things continue to go smoothly as the Owls’ experienced roster works to improve.

There’s been less Rice football 101 this spring as an experienced roster transitions from learning the basics to perfecting their craft. That’s been a theme throughout the last two and a half weeks of practices and something the coaching staff has noticed, much to their delight. This update hits on those signs of veteran experience while touching on a younger position group making big strides. As always, the entire archive of practice reports is available on our Patreon.

Rice Football Recruiting: Breaking Down the 2024 Signees – Defense

February 7, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 Rice Football Recruiting class includes several hand-picked impact players on defense. Here’s how that side of the ball stacks up.

With the addition of 10 players on National Signing Day, the 2024 Rice football recruiting class has grown to 23 players. Of those players, 16 are current high school seniors and nine play on the defensive side of the ball plus one specialist.

This group now includes walk-on players in addition to scholarship athletes, but as head coach Mike Bloomgren was quick to point out, “All these kids are suited to come in here, play college football and compete and help the Owls.” We’ve gone position by position breaking down each of the new Owls and how they’ll help the program on the field.

Rice Football Recruiting: JUCO LB Blaise Tita commits to Owls

January 5, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 Rice Football recruiting class picked up another transfer this week. JUCO linebacker Blaise Tita has committed to the Owls.

The first junior college transfer in the 2024 Rice Football recruiting class is officially in the fold. A local product who played his high school ball just down the road at Alief Taylor High School, Killgore Junior College linebacker Blaise Tita has committed to the Owls.

Tita spent the 2022 season with Lamar, initially playing sparingly before finishing the season with 19 tackles in his final three games. From there he transferred to the JUCO level, looking for a bounce back. When he reentered the portal this offseason he had received offers North Alabama, Southeastern, Mississippi Valley State and Abilene Christian. Then Rice swooped in and sealed the deal.

“It’s truly a blessing,” Tita told The Roost. “I can’t wait to make the most of it.”

Tita is the first commitment since the early signing period when Rice formally announced 13 additions to their program. He’s the second linebacker in the class and should pair well with incoming freshman Kaleb Blanton. Tita has at least two seasons of eligibility remaining, with the potential for a third.

Tita is always ready to deliver a big hit. A quick look at his play from his stint at Lamar makes that abundantly clear. And unlike a perfectly cut up highschool highlight reel, Tita’s season’s worth of action at Lamar lays his play out in the open. He’s aggressive and instinctive and appears to have some range. Rice football definitely knows what it wants from an outside linebacker at this point. Tita fits the bill.
