August 13, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The Bayou Bucket wasn’t played in 2020, adding intrigue and importance to the upcoming matchup between Houston football and Rice. Both programs believe themselves to be on the upswing and will enter the game fresh off challenging nonconference games the week prior.

What should we make of the Cougars’ contingent and how do their faithful feel about the team? We sat down with Sam and Dustin from the Scott and Holman Pawdcast this week to look ahead at Houston’s 2021 season.

Rice Football 2021 Fall Camp Report: 5 Position battles to watch

August 9, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football has finished a handful of practices in fall camp and several position battles at key spots are starting to get interesting.

Four practices into fall camp, a handful of position battles are starting to get particularly interesting. Everyone’s eyes will turn to the quarterbacks, naturally, but they’re not the only players fighting for reps come September. Here are five positions I’ll be watching closely as the first scrimmage approaches at the end of the week.

This is our second camp update. You can read the first update from the start of camp here.

Rice Football Fall Camp Report: New coaches and players take the field

August 7, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The first practice of Rice football fall camp is in the books. Here’s your first of many updates in the run up to the 2021 season.

Rice Football opened fall camp on Friday. It was the first of four weeks of practice as the team prepares for their opening game against Arkansas on Labor Day weekend. There was a lot that happened on and off the field this week, and in the past couple months to catch up on. Here is the latest.

Collin Spencer promoted to coach safeties

There was some shifting on the coaching staff during the offseason. As previously announced, Marques Tuiasosopo was hired as the Owls’ new offensive coordinator. Former tight ends coach Chris Monfiletto bounced over to coach special teams with Jim Jackson taking over the tight end room.

Defensive coordinator Brian Smith is now coaching linebackers, opening up a spot with the safeties. Bloomgren tapped former quality control analyst Collin Spencer for that job.

Originally hired as a graduate assistant, Spencer has risen up the ranks over the past few years. His understanding of the scheme and ability to communicate it well gave Bloomgren comfort in the decision.

“He’s like a mini Brian Smith,” Bloomgren said of Spencer, “It’s always good when you can have your proteges step into those roles.”
