Rice Football 2021 Fall Camp Report: Defense dominates in first scrimmage

August 14, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

As has been the case in recent years, the Rice football defense stole the show in the first scrimmage of fall camp. Here are a few things we learned.

The first official scrimmage of fall camp is in the books and there’s a lot to unpack. As expected Wiley Green and Luke McCaffrey split first-team reps, but they were the only players who had their performances scrutinized on Saturday. There will be more on them coming soon. For now, a few notes of impressive performers and takeaways from who was (and wasn’t) available.

Rice Football 2021 Fall Camp Report: 5 Position battles to watch

August 9, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football has finished a handful of practices in fall camp and several position battles at key spots are starting to get interesting.

Four practices into fall camp, a handful of position battles are starting to get particularly interesting. Everyone’s eyes will turn to the quarterbacks, naturally, but they’re not the only players fighting for reps come September. Here are five positions I’ll be watching closely as the first scrimmage approaches at the end of the week.

This is our second camp update. You can read the first update from the start of camp here.

Rice Baseball: 2021 MiLB Owls early-August update

August 8, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

While several Rice Baseball alums are producing at the highest level, others are working their way up the ladder. Here’s the latest on the MiLB Owls.

Triple-A

Kevin McCanna (Diamondbacks) has gotten off to a strong start after beginning the year on the injured list. He’s appeared in six games with four starts, striking out 12 batters in 15.2 innings with a 2.87 ERA. His 0.96 WHIP is the best mark of his career thus far.

Jordan Stephens (Indians) has tallied five saves in six opportunities this season. He’s frequently been asked to work multiple innings, getting at least four outs in seven of his last eight outings. His season ERA sits at 4.35 and he has 32 strikeouts in 31 innings.

Glenn Otto (Rangers) was traded to the Texas Rangers shortly after his promotion to AAA while in the Yankees’ system. He’s appeared in two games since, allowing six runs in nine innings while striking out nine. For the year, across all levels, Otto has a 3.61 ERA with 124 strikeouts.

Tony Cingrani (Cubs) has been extremely effective as a situational reliever, pitching five innings over the span of seven games. He’s struck out five batters, allows two hits and zero earned runs. Opposing batters are hitting .125 against Cingrani.

Tristan Gray (Rays) has started to heat up as the summer progressed. He hit .288 in July, raising his season average to .246, which is on pace to be his highest average since 2017 and six points better than his career minor league average of .240.

Double-A

Ford Proctor (Rays) started slow, hitting .152 in May and .203 in June. Since that point, he’s been on a tear ever since, hitting .302 from July 1 onward. He’s lifted his season average up to .224 and raised his on-base percentage to .387.

Ricky Salinas (Indians) has run into a rough patch since making the jump to AA. He’s been hit fairly consistently in recent weeks and seen his ERA tick upward to 5.72 after posting a 4.32 ERA in High-A Ball. Salinas can be hot and cold, but its been a couple of outings since he’s been at his best.

Single-A

Matt Canterino (Twins, High-A) made his return from the injured list this month after missing the entirety of June and July. In his first game back he worked two scoreless innings, striking out two. His season ERA sits at a near-flawless 0.90.

Dane Myers (Tigers, High-A) was placed on a rehab assignment with the Low-A Lakeland Flying Tigers but has yet to appear in a game. He’s been sidelined since June 6. He’s hitting .283 this season in games across Low-A, High-A and AA.

Trei Cruz (Tigers, Low-A) has jumped around the lower levels of the Tigers’ organization this year, going back and forth between the injured list and the field. He was most recently assigned to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (Low-A) on August 3. Across all levels, he’s hitting .163 in 44 games.

Evan Kravetz (Reds) has been back and forth between rookie ball and Single-A, posting a combined season-long ERA of 2.89. He’s made one appearance with the High-A club so far, allowing five runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.

Rookie Ball

Jon Duplantier (Diamondbacks) went back and forth between AAA and the Major Leagues earlier this season before being released on July 27 and quickly resigned to a minor league deal. He was assigned to the Arizona Complex League on August 4 and has made one appearance since.
