BREAKING: Wiley Green named Rice football starting quarterback

August 22, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football has its QB1. After battling through the spring and fall camp, redshirt junior Wiley Green has been named the Owls’ starter.

It’s never come easy for Rice football quarterback Wiley Green, yet somehow he’s always managed to be the last man standing. Green has battled for the starting quarterback job through several offseasons at South Main and has once again done enough to win the competition in camp. On Monday, head coach Mike Bloomgren announced Green had been named the Owls’ starter for their opening game against USC.

Through four seasons, Green has thrown for 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He’s thrown for 1,849 yards in his career and hopes to make the 2022 season his first wire-to-wire campaign as a starer after losing the job on multiple occasions due to injury.

Green won a fierce battle for the job from challenger TJ McMahon, who by most accounts had the upper hand throughout the spring and into the early stages of fall camp. While McMahon did showcase plenty of growth from his debut against Louisiana Tech last fall, Green’s consistency and veteran savvy would prove to be enough in the end.

It was Green who earned the opening nod last season and very nearly led his team to an upset win over Arkansas. He reemerged later in the season and did complete the Owls’ marquee road upset of UAB, directing the Blazers’ defense in what was his best outing of his Rice career, notching one of the most significant wins for the Owls under Bloomgren in the process.

Now, for the third time in his career, Green will be the opening day starter. He’ll be the man at the helm to kick off a 2022 season which the Owls believe will be a breakthrough campaign.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 5: Defense rebounds in Scrimmage 2

August 21, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football defense bounces back in their final scrimmage of fall camp which ended with a quarterback decision looming in the near future.

If the Rice football offense won the first scrimmage, the defense delivered the equalizing blow on Saturday night. In some ways, it marked a fitting end to fall camp, which featured a fairly balanced level of play from both sides of the ball.

Rice has roughly two weeks before they open their season against USC. What did we learn from this final scrimmage and when will a starting quarterback be named? We now have a firm timeline for when that decision will be announced.

The 2022 Rice football season is right around the corner. This week we preview the defense and discuss the latest from fall camp.

Rice football defensive coordinator has opened multiple discussions with praise of ACU transfer Quent Titre, but he’s not the only standout on that side of the ball for the Owls so far during camp. Rice Football Recruiting: 2023 Safety Ty Morris commits to Owls

August 18, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 Rice Football recruiting class has added a local product to the fold. Dekaney safety Ty Morris has committed to the Owls.

All the way back in March of 2021, the second offer for the 2023 Rice Football recruiting offer was extended to Dekaney safety Ty Morris. Even though it was extremely early in the recruiting cycle for the 2023 class, Rice knew from the beginning they liked what they saw in Morris. Now, more than a year later, Morris has committed to the Owls.

The addition of Morris is a big one for Rice. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound safety had more than a dozen offers at the time of his pledge. He ultimately picked the Owls over offers from Houston, Purdue, Tulsa, Louisiana Tech, Army, Marshall and others.

The win over a crosstown rival and a Power 5 program is another feather in a Rice football recruiting class that is shaping up to be a strong one. At the time of Morris’ commitment, Rice owns the No. 2 class in Conference USA and the No. 79 class nationally.

Following the decommitment of Jamarie Wiggins this summer, Morris is currently the lone safety in the 2023 class and the second member of the secondary, along with MacArthur corner AJ Stephens who committed in June.

Premium: Rice Football Recruiting Offer and Commitment Tracker

Listed as a safety in some places and a linebacker in others, Morris could fit in well in the Viper hybrid position at South Main. His film certainly highlights a player that’s comfortable in coverage yet still explosive running downhill. Versatility will always be valued on the defensive side of the ball at Rice, making Morris an exciting addition to the 2023 class.
