Rice Football wide receiver Cedric Patterson no longer on roster

July 11, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Further attrition has hit the Rice football wide receiver room. Another potential starter, Cedric Patterson, is not expected to return in 2023.

Innocuous roster updates happen every so often throughout the offseason. Walk-on players and lesser-known transfers are added to the list of players expected to be with the Rice football program for the coming season. Names are retracted, too, for various reasons ranging from medical retirements to players choosing to pursue other collegiate endeavors.

It was in one such roster update that wideout Cedric Patterson was removed from the Owls’ roster.

As best as is possible, a running tracker of every change to the Rice roster this offseason has been maintained here. Patterson’s removal marks the 18th player with remaining eligibility who has departed this offseason. And with Bradley Rozner’s recent entry into the Transfer Portal — his name was removed from the roster this week.

Update: Multiple sources confirmed to The Roost that Patterson’s removal stems from an injury suffered in the spring. He will be medically retiring from football, but is expected to remain around the team.

Needless to say, this development compounds the Rozner news and will have massive ramifications for how the Owls will operate at the position this coming season.  The wide receiver portion of the 2023 Rice Football Season Preview has been updated to reflect these changes and has just been released here.

Rice Football 2023 Spring Notebook 9: Offensive Takeaways

April 18, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice Football offense started slow in the spring but finished strong. Here’s what we learned about that side of the ball.

The offense “won” the 2023 Rice Football Blue and Gray Game, for those that put credence in spring game scoring systems. But regardless of what the scoreboard said, that side of the ball did exhibit plenty of growth from practice 1 to practice 15. Some questions were answered. Others weren’t. Here are 10 closing thoughts on the offense from the totality of the spring.

Rice Football: Should we worry about the offense? — March ’23 Patreon Q&A

March 29, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football offense didn’t light the world on fire in its first scrimmage of the spring. How much should we read into those struggles?

The arrival of starting quarterback JT Daniels spurred a new wave of optimism in the Rice football offense this offseason, but the first scrimmage of the spring came and went without fireworks from that side of the ball. Why was that? And what further developments should be expected as the entire unit works to improve this spring. We dig into those questions in this month’s Patreon Q&A.

Rice Football 2023 Spring Practice Notebook 4: Scrimmage 1

March 25, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The first scrimmage of 2023 Rice Football spring practice is in the books. Here are a few individual standouts and some big-picture takeaways.

As is typically the case, the Rice football offense was doing push ups at the end of spring scrimmage one, losing the day to the defense. Head coach Mike Bloomgren admitted it would have been a rarity to see the offense come out faster than the defense to start any camp session, but was quick to level some specific critiques as well. This update breaks down some individual standouts on both sides of the ball and their ramifications on the team thus far.
