The Roost Podcast | Ep. 20 – 2019 UTEP Review and redshirt recap

December 5, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football went out on top, ending their season on a three-game winning streak. Carter and Matthew recap the UTEP win and recap key redshirt players.

It took a few months to get here, but Rice football got rolling at the tail end of the 2019 season. The defense allowed one touchdown and the offense put up 30 points in their final regular season game, a road win over UTEP. Quarterback JoVoni Johnson, a notable redshirt player, was instrumental, scoring his first career touchdowns. More on Johnson, other redshirt players and the UTEP game in this week’s show.

Episode 20 Notes

  • End of season updates —  Our next show, Ep. 21, will feature postseason awards and superlatives. Have a player or an award you’ve got in mind? Leave it in the comments or send it our way on social media. While you’re here, please take a moment to fill out our postseason survey and let us know what you thought of the podcast and the site as a whole.
  • UTEP Review — When Kai Locksley went down, UTEP’s offense disappeared. Credit belongs to the Rice football defense, though, who did what they were supposed to do against a backup quarterback by holding the Miners scoreless in the second half. Meanwhile the offense generated several explosive plays, led by Aston Walter and freshman wideout Zane Knipe. It was an all-around complete showing and another win.
  • Redshirt updates — Only one Rice football player appeared in exactly five games this season. Most appeared in either eight or more or four or fewer. Carter and Matthew work through some key redshirt names and what that means for the program in 2020 and beyond.

Episode 18 Notes

  • News and notes —  Rice Basketball had a heartbreaking week. The women lost a one-point slugfest with No. 5 Texas A&M. Then, two days later, the men let a big first half lead slip away, falling to crosstown rival Houston on Tuesday night. The women’s team is coming into form and the men’s team has looked much better than expected after the first few weeks.
  • Middle Tennessee Review — Rice came out swinging, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in Murfreesboro. Carter and Matthew talk through the big day from the offense, highlighting moments from wide receiver Brad Rozner and running back Aston Walter. The coaching staff had this team ready to go and the Owls were able to slam the door in the fourth quarter for the first time.
  • North Texas Preview — As of now, Mason Fine is projected to play on Saturday against Rice football. Whoever is at the controls, North Texas is going to make the Rice football defense work. The defense is a different story. The Owls should be able to put up some points, setting themselves with a chance to improve their winning streak to two in a row.

November 7, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

With the second open weekend of the season looming, Carter and Matthew discuss the emergence of JoVoni Johnson and Rice Football vs Marshall in Week 10.

Episode 16 Notes

  • News and notes —  Rice Basketball is under way with the women and men opening their season. We touch on that briefly as well as a shout out to the Owls’ undefeated-in-conference-play and national ranked volleyball team who host Western Kentucky on Sunday.
  • Marshall Review — The new-look offense sure felt a lot different than previous iterations on the Owls’ efforts on that side of the ball. Juma Otoviano plus JoVoni Johnson was a dangerous combination, unfortunately one which was ended prematurely when Johnson left the game with injury. And of course, shoutouts to a constantly tenacious defense. Saturday featured big days from Antonio Montero, Blaze Alldredge, Naeem Smith and Garrett Grammer.
  • The redshirt dilemma — There is a very real scenario where both Johnson and grad transfer quarterback Tom Stewart are healthy for the Owls’ upcoming game against Middle Tennesse. Johnson has one game remaining to preserve his redshirt. Will Rice preserve his eligibility? Or will they do everything they can to win now? What’s the right answer? Carter and Matthew discuss.
