2023 Rice Football Roster by State

July 16, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football roster is Texas-centric, but has diversified somewhat as the Owls deploy a national recruiting scope. Where are the Owls from?

When head coach Mike Bloomgren took the helm of Rice football prior to the 2018 season, a national recruiting scope was the talk of South Main. In the years that have followed, he’s delivered on those aspirations, with a 2023 roster expected to feature players from 18 different states (including Hawaii).

Here’s a visual breakdown of the 2023 roster upon the conclusion of spring practices, with the announced 2023 signing class (the bulk of which arrived on campus this summer) included.

2023 Rice Football Roster by State

Breaking down the roster

Of the 106 players currently accounted for, 58 percent of the team is from Texas. The following two highest totals hail from Florida (eight) and California (seven), noted college football recruiting hotbeds. After that, the pool diversifies quickly. New Jersey is the home to four Owls and five other states have three Rice players apiece, with a decent congregation in the northeast alongside the traditional southern recruiting grounds.

Director of Recruiting Marco Regalado made it clear upon his hiring that he wanted to balance the nationwide scope with a focus on Texas talent. The 2023 signing class leans slightly further toward the Lone Star State.

Breaking down the incoming class

Of the incoming signees, 63 percent from Texas. That’s an uptick of five percentage points from the full scope of the roster. It also doesn’t account for a flurry of walk-ons, many of which have already announced their intentions to come to Rice. By their nature, a good portion of those players tend to come from nearby.

2023 Rice Football Season Preview: Wide Receiver

July 11, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Next up in our 2023 Rice Football Season Preview: wide receiver. Let’s dive into the position and break down the Owls’ plans for the group this year.

As of the end of June, it seemed reasonable to conclude the wide receiver room was the deepest position group Rice football would bring into the 2023 season. That might still very well be the case, but the room dynamics will inevitably shift with the loss of star wideout Bradley Rozner to the Transfer Portal in early July. Here’s how the position looks in 2023.

Rice Football wide receiver Cedric Patterson no longer on roster

July 11, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Further attrition has hit the Rice football wide receiver room. Another potential starter, Cedric Patterson, is not expected to return in 2023.

Innocuous roster updates happen every so often throughout the offseason. Walk-on players and lesser-known transfers are added to the list of players expected to be with the Rice football program for the coming season. Names are retracted, too, for various reasons ranging from medical retirements to players choosing to pursue other collegiate endeavors.

It was in one such roster update that wideout Cedric Patterson was removed from the Owls’ roster.

As best as is possible, a running tracker of every change to the Rice roster this offseason has been maintained here. Patterson’s removal marks the 18th player with remaining eligibility who has departed this offseason. And with Bradley Rozner’s recent entry into the Transfer Portal — his name was removed from the roster this week.

Update: Multiple sources confirmed to The Roost that Patterson’s removal stems from an injury suffered in the spring. He will be medically retiring from football, but is expected to remain around the team.

Needless to say, this development compounds the Rozner news and will have massive ramifications for how the Owls will operate at the position this coming season.  The wide receiver portion of the 2023 Rice Football Season Preview has been updated to reflect these changes and has just been released here.

If you’re not a subscriber yet, now would be a great time to take advantage of our free trial and find out how the team will adjust to the changes in the wide receiver room this season.
