Rice Baseball 2025: MLB Owls Update – August 5

August 5, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2025 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are making the most of their time in The Show. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers finds himself in a bit of a slump, hitless in his last six games dating back to July 29. He’s continued to make plays in center field, but this marks one of his more prolonged cold spells at the plate following a red-hot start to the season. He’s walked three times and struck out five times over that time.

Through August 5, Myers is hitting .245 with 13 extra-base hits, 18 walks and 64 strikeouts. His OPS is .623 and he’s collected 25 RBI and stolen 16 bases.

Tristan Gray – Tampa Bay Rays

Gray is currently in his second stint of the season with the Rays’ big league club. After joining the team via trade, he was sent to the minors for a span of just a few days before being recalled at the beginning of August. He has had one plate appearance since then — a strike out as a pinch hitter on Sunday against the Dodgers.

Through August 4, Gray is hitting .143 with no walks and four strikeouts in just seven plate appearances. He collected one RBI and one hit.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon has been out of the news since it was reported he would miss a significant amount of time following hip surgery this spring. There have been no updates from the Angels or his camp since then.

Matt Canterino – Twins AAA

Canterino underwent season-ending surgery this spring and was released by the Twins before subsequently signing back with the club on a minor league contract while he undergoes rehab.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls either began the season in AAA or have since been promoted to that level:

  • Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds)
  • Glenn Otto – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Astros)
  • Trei Cruz – Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers)

A revamped Rice football defense will have plenty of new faces, but the safety room will be more familiar to Owls’ fans than most. Rice Football Recruiting: CB Jordan Mitchell commits to Owls

August 1, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The month of August began with good news for the 2026 Rice Football recruiting class. Cornerback Jordan Mitchell has committed to the Owls.

A productive summer, which saw the 2026 Rice Football recruiting class grow from a pair of spring commitments to more than a dozen future Owls, got even better this week. On the same day the team returned to the grass to open fall camp, they got good news for the future. Ridge Point High School cornerback Jordan Mitchell has committed to the Owls.

Mitchell hadn’t reported any other offers at the time Rice made its bid for his services, but that didn’t seem to impact the relationship that developed between Mitchell and the Rice staff.

“When Rice first started recruiting me, they made it clear that I was a special player and were looking forward to watching me progress,” Mitchell told The Roost, crediting the leadership of head coach Scott Abell and the earnestness of position coach Jeremy Modkins, who made him feel welcome.

Mitchell’s fit within the scheme sealed the deal. “I know Rice plays a lot of man coverage,” he said, “That’s my specialty, so I know I will be a great fit in their defense.”

Mitchell is the second defensive back committed to the Owls thus far, joining Cy Falls’ corner James Henderson, who made his pledge in mid-June. The rest of the defensive commits to this point will play in front of them, including linebacker Jayden Cupitt and a trio of linemen: Seth Clarke, JD Singletary and Quincy Tchikou.

Premium: Rice Football Recruiting Offer and Commitment Tracker

Mitchell’s athleticism is one of the first thing that jumps out when you turn on the tape. He’s sticky and hard to shake in coverage and moves well in the open field. His added versatility in the return game is a nice bonus that should serve him well at the next level.
