The Roost Podcast | Ep 156 – Previewing the 2023 Rice Football Defense

August 25, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

We wrap up our fall camp discussion with the Rice football defense, breaking down that side of the ball and talking through the depth chart at each position.

The Rice football defensive line lost a lot, but might actually be better. The linebacker room looks as deep as its been in quite some time and the secondary has an interesting combination of potential difference-makers and up-and-comers. How will the Owls piece it all together and what will the result be? We talk about the entirety of the defense in this week’s show.

You can find previous episodes on the podcast page. For now, give a listen to Episode 156.

August 23, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football has some positions solved and others are still up in the air as the team gets closer and closer to starting game prep for its season opener against Texas.

In the days ahead, Rice football will officially start installing its game plan for the season opener against Texas on September 2. In the meantime, there are a few position groups with uncertainty to figure out. Depth charts are forthcoming, but how the team is attacking this interim period also says a lot about who is in the mix for which spots.

This practice report digs into those position groups of note, addressing a few existing injuries and some players on their way back as well as a few additional items.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – Aug 22

August 23, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Injured List

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Charjois was placed on the 15-day Injured List with a strained right rib cage, retroactive to August 4 and has since joined the Marlins’ Single-A affiliated for a rehab assignment. He is eligible to return to the big league club when he’s ready.

Through August 22, Chargois has a 3.75 ERA with a 1.193 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon was placed on the 60-day injured list this past week, meaning he won’t be eligible to return to the club until September 9, in the final weeks of the regular season. There have been little updates on Rendon’s status to this point.

Through August 22, Rendon is hitting .236 with eight extra-base hits, 25 walks and 27 strikeouts. His OPS is .678 and he’s collected 22 RBI.

Rice Football: Realignment and Plan Bs – August 2023 Patreon Q&A

August 22, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

From conference affiliations to Rice football’s potential should injuries arise again, this month’s Patreon Q&A covers a lot of ground.

Rice football has had unbelievably bad luck when it comes to health at the quarterback position. The team really believes in JT Daniels, but what are the Owls’ prospects should they have to turn to Plan B at the position? And when it comes to the future of the program as a whole, what conference will the Owls be playing in come 2024 and beyond?

There were a couple of good questions this month, so we went ahead and answered all of them. Want to get your questions answered? Subscribe on Patreon for our monthly mailbag.
