Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 2: Assessing the Offense

August 6, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Offensive Coordinator Marques Tuiasosopo unpacked his plans and outstanding questions for the Rice football offense as the Owls start fall camp.

On Saturday, Rice football practiced with pads for the first time during fall camp, giving the skill position players their chance to perform against real coverages and real pressure. For many, it was the opening stanza of a three-week-long interview with precious starting spots on the line. It was also the first of six consecutive practice days following which the team will host a meaningful scrimmage.

He was kind enough to sit down with The Roost to debrief what he’s seen so far and share expectations and key storylines he’ll be paying attention to as fall camp progresses.

Rice Baseball: 2022 MLB Owls update – Aug 3

August 3, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2022 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey made two appearances this week, allowing three earned run in the ninth inning on Saturday — he entered the game with a commanding 7-1 lead. On Tuesday he was more of his usual self, working one scoreless inning of hitless ball.

Through August 3, Duffey has a 4.46 ERA with a 1.299 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge saw action in two games this week, finishing out the ninth inning on Sunday against the Rangers and coming in for 1.2 innings of relief on Tuesday against the Mariners. Luetge was saddled with the loss in that contest, allowing a solo home run which made the difference.

Through August 3, Luetge has a 2.82 ERA with a 1.252 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto worked five innings of four-hit ball against the Angels on Saturday, giving up four earned runs in the process while striking out five. Three of those runs came via a Shohei Ohtani home run.

Through August 3, Otto has a 5.50 ERA with a 1.458 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

J.T. Chargois – Tampa Bay Rays

After missing most of the regular season, Chargois is in the middle of a rehab assignment with the Durham Bulls, including a pristine six-pitch inning on Saturday night.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

The Angels announced on June 17  that Rendon would undergo season-ending surgery on his right wrist. His season is done.

Rendon finished the year hitting .228 with 15 extra-base hits, 23 walks and 32 strikeouts. His OPS is .707 and he’s collected 24 RBI.

Rice Football 2022 Fall Camp Notebook 1: Depth Chart

August 3, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The first Rice football depth chart of the fall camp has been released and there’s a lot to discuss as the run-up to the season begins.

At the end of the day, depth charts aren’t nearly as important as we’d like to make the out to be. Coaches don’t spend as much time pouring over the particulars as one might initially think. The first Rice football depth chart of fall camp is no different. It’s a guideline and a starting point for what promises to be several weeks of interesting developments.

More: Rice Football Preseason Preview Series

To that end, it’s always instrumental to begin the exercise by looking at which faces are new to the roster, who isn’t listed at all and which notable changes have occurred since the last iteration was published. This update will go through all of those particulars and highlight a few key position battles to keep an eye on as Rice football opens fall camp.

Rice Football 2022 Season Preview: Running Back

August 1, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

As part of our 2022 Rice Football Preseason Preview series, next we’ll examine the running back position and discuss the Owls’ plans for that group.

Pound the rock has been the mantra of Rice football since head coach Mike Bloomgren arrived on campus. Even with that run-game-oriented mindset, the backfield has been a mixed bag. Can someone rise up and become a true bellcow back? Will a committee of specialists do the trick? Here’s our 2022 Running Back Preview.
