AAC Football: Circa Sports releases preseason champion odds

June 23, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Circa Sports has released preseason conference championship odds. Who are the favorites and how do the rest of the AAC Football teams stack up?

As the summer months move along the first inklings of football season approaching are upon us. Circa Sports released preseason conference championship odds on Sunday, including their odds for the AAC Football Champion. Memphis is the favorite, with Tulane and UTSA right on their heels. Here’s the odds for every team in the league:

  1. Memphis (+300)
  2. Tulane (+350)
  3. UTSA (+400)
  4. USF (+700)
  5. Army (+1500)
  6. North Texas (+1500)
  7. ECU (+2000)
  8. FAU (+2000)
  9. Rice (+2000)
  10. Tulsa (+2500)
  11. UAB (+2500)
  12. Charlotte (+4000)
  13. Temple (+25000)

As far as Circa Sports is concerned, they view this league as a four-team race with the teams with the fifth-best odds (Army and North Texas) more than double the odds of the fourth team in the list, South Florida. The Bulls seem to be getting a lot of preseason buzz following their breakout 20243 campaign in their first season under the leadership of Alex Golesh.

Temple was the only team signaled out as a complete longshot. Those Owls lost quarterback EJ Warner to Rice this offseason. The Houston-based Owls join a smattering of teams with very similar odds in the middle of the pack. That suggests a very competitive middle of the pack and hopefully an exciting back and forth that makes each Saturday in the league exciting once again.

Rice Football Recruiting: TE Luke Tevis commits to Owls

June 20, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2025 Rice Football recruiting class is starting to pick up steam with a multi-commitment day. Tight end Luke Tevis has committed to the Owls.

As the summer camp cycle starts to pick up the 2025 Rice Football recruiting class is growing along with it. Rice added a pledge from wide receiver Keenan Arcega-Whiteside earlier in the day only to double down with another pass catcher that same morning. Paschal tight end Luke Tevis has committed to the Owls.

Landing Tevis represents a tremendous win for Rice, even if it comes relatively early in the recruiting calendar. The playmaking tight end already held offers from fellow AAC foes UTSA and North Texas, as well as Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech and a few service academies.

Winning head-to-head battles in Texas is always important, especially when it involves taking a player from the DFW area away from a rival program in the same league.

The addition of Tevis and Arcega-Whiteside brings the 2025 Rice Football recruiting class up to five players spanning both sides of the ball from the trenches to the skill positions. It’s a well-rounded start for a program that looks to build on a robust roster that returns the vast majority of its contributing players heading into the 2024 season.

In a highlight-centric world, most offensive recruits open their film clips with a big play down the field ending in a touchdown. It’s probably fitting then that the very first highlight in Tevis’ full-season review is a punishing block that ends with a would-be tackler being laid horizontal with force. Tevis showcases his abilities as a receiver and runner, too, but that big hit says a lot about what he values about his game and undoubtedly was attractive to this coaching staff.

Rice Football Recruiting: WR Keenan Arcega-Whiteside commits to Owls

June 20, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Head coach Mike Bloomgren and company are adding a familiar name to the 2025 Rice Football recruiting class. Wide receiver Keenan Arcega-Whiteside has committed to the Owls.

The football world is full of connections that go well beyond what meets the eye. Those relationships foster movement among staff and players alike and have brought at least one relatively familiar face into the 2025  Rice Football recruiting class. Keenan Arcega-Whiteside, brother of former Stanford standout JJ Arcega-Whiteside, has committed to the Owls.

This is not the first time Bloomgren’s Stanford connections have borne fruit for the Owls. In addition to adding special teams coordinator Pete Alamar to the staff and a few transfers directly from the Cardinal roster over the years, Bloomgren also coached Christian McCaffrey at Stanford before recruiting his brother, Luke, to come to South Main. That familiar connection paid dividends with an NFL Draft selection for Luke this past April

A multi-sport athlete, Keenan showcased his athleticism as a basketball player and a football player at the high school level. On the football side, he’d picked up a few offers this summer from the likes of Austin Peay, Gardner Webb and others before announcing his decision to commit to Rice.

Arcega-Whiteside was on campus for Junior Day earlier this year and clearly liked what he saw. His commitment is the fourth of the Owls’ 2025 class which could start to grow here in earnest following camp season.

Already 6-foot-6 and 185 pounds, Arcega-Whiteside looks the part and his film backs it up. He’s the sort of big-body target this staff loves to utilize in the redzone and on chain-moving throws near the sticks. He’s fairly shifty for his size and while he probably won’t win a footrace against the speedier players the Owls bring into the fold in this class, bringing him down is no easy task. Rice has a good amount of speed on their roster right now. They need someone with some power. Arcega-Whiteside certainly delivers on that front.

Rice Baseball: 2024 Summer Ball mid-June update

June 19, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice baseball players scattered across the country for Summer Ball leagues. Here’s how each faired this offseason.

Pitchers

Matthew Rheaume has had the most impressive start to his summer campaign. He has yet to allow a run in four appearances for the Mooresville Spinners, tossing eight scoreless innings. Garrett Stratton isn’t far behind him, allowing just one run in 4.1 innings of work. The rest of the arms have had a mix of good and bad outings with plenty of time to improve their numbers as the summer progresses.

Pitching Stats

Hitters

All eyes are on Eric Anderson with the recent announcement that Owls’ starting catcher Manny Garza has entered the Transfer Portal. Anderson has looked the part so far this offseason, leading all Owls hitters with 11 hits, 12 walks and six RBI. He and Tobias Motley have gotten off to the most impressive starts. Motley and Trey Duffield each have a home run apiece.

Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls Update – June 18

June 19, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

JT Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois made his 2024 MLB debut last week, returning from the injured list to throw 1.1 scoreless innings against the New York Mets. He followed that up with two additional scoreless appearances, keeping his ERA a spotless 0.00 through his first week of pro action this year.

Through June 18, Chargois has a 0.00 ERA with a 1.200 WHIP. He’s averaging 5.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers has played very sparingly in the month of June, playing a full nine innings at least once. He’s entered games as a late defensive replacement on several occasions and been removed in favor of a pinch hitter at the end of games as well. As a result, he’s only had more than two at bats in a single game twice since June 1.

Through June 18, Myers is hitting .204 with four extra-base hits, four walks and 23 strikeouts. His OPS is .624 and he’s collected nine RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Kansas City Royals

Duffey was designated for assignment by the Royals at the end of May, ending a nine-game stint with the club that lasted roughly a month. He was 1-0 with a hold over that time, making nine appearances, including three that went longer than one inning. For now, he’ll return to the AAA club.

Through June 18, Duffey has a 5.00 ERA with a 1.667 WHIP. He’s averaging 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon is expected to miss a lengthy amount of time after suffering a partial tear in his left hamstring in late April. There is no timetable for his return as of yet, a frustrating development after a red-hot end of the month prior to suffering the injury.

Through May 2, Rendon is hitting .267 with three extra-base hits, six walks and 15 strikeouts. His OPS is .632 and he’s collected three RBI.

Glenn Otto – San Diego Padres

Prior to the beginning of the season, Otto was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on March 19 with a right teres major strain. He has since been assigned to the Arizona Complex League for rehab.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls began the season in AAA:

  • Matt Canterino – St Paul Saints (Twins)
  • Tyler Duffey – Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals)
  • Jon Duplantier – Syracuse Mets (Mets)
  • Tristan Gray – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins)
  • Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds)
  • Lucas Luetge – Worcester Red Sox (Red Sox)
  • Dane Myers – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) *promoted
