Rice Women’s Basketball: Owls fizzle in the fourth, fall to ODU

January 20, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice women’s basketball entered the fourth quarter in a tied game with Old Dominion, but the Owls couldn’t finish things off, falling to 0-4 in conference play.

It wasn’t quite deja-vu, but there was a familiar feel from the opening moments to the final whistle of the road tilt between Rice women’s basketball and Old Dominion on Thursday afternoon. Just as they had done in prior outings, Rice raced out to an early lead, reaching an eight-point advantage in the first three minutes and change of the first quarter.

And just has been the case in those previous games. the Owls watched their opponents claw back into the game. Old Dominion would cut their deficit to two points in the first quarter and get within one point in the final minute before halftime. In the third quarter, the Monarchs would take the lead for the very first time as both teams struggled from the field.

Last Time Out: Rice Women’s Basketball ‘s early lead slips away vs Marshall

The tempo started to pick up at the back end of the third quarter. There were no lead changes in the first 25 minutes of regulation. There were three in the final five minutes of the third quarter with India Bellamy delivering the equalizing layup in the final seconds.

Turnovers proved to be the difference in the final quarter. Rice turned the ball over seven times to ODU’s three with both teams shooting 60 percent or better from the floor. Old Dominion edged Rice on the boards and got off a few more shots and that proved to be the difference. Rice falls to 0-4 in conference play with the loss.

Player Spotlight | India Bellamy

Bellamy scored a career-high 12 points against Old Dominion, adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals to her ledger along the way. She played 26-minutes, also a career-high, but one that could prove to be more sticky moving forward. Rice has relied much more on its thin bench in recent weeks and will have to continue doing so if they have any chance of being fresh in the fourth quarter. That means trusting players like Bellamy when they’re shooting the ball well and spreading the ball around to lighten the load.

Stat Corner | Figuring out the Fourth

At the beginning of the season, winning the third quarter was a major point of emphasis for the Owls. Head coach Lindsay Edmonds opened multiple postgame media sessions with a desire to improve as a team right out of the halftime break. For the most part, Rice has answered that call, particularly since their return from their long COVID-19 induced hiatus. Now it’s time for this team to take the next step.

“We’ve preached being better in the third [quarter] and I think that’s happened,” Edmonds said earlier in the week. “Now we’ve got to figure out how to be better sometimes in the second or the fourth.” Rice was outscored 29-19 in the fourth quarter on Thursday, losing the game by that same 10-point margin.

Rice Football Recruiting: JUCO TE Boden Groen commits to Owls

January 19, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2022 Rice Football recruiting classes solidified their tight end haul this week with the commitment of JUCO tight end Boden Groen, formerly of Mater Dei High School in California.

The first wave of 2022 Rice Football commitments came from the high school ranks. Once the Owls had established a base from the younger ranks, they turned toward the Transfer Portal. Rice picked up four transfer additions to the class in December. They’ve now added their first transfer commitment of the New Year in the form of JUCO tight end Boden Groen.

Groen, together with former Cal tight end Gavin Reinwald, provide reinforcements for a tight end room that has experienced a sizable amount of change in the past year. Jordan Myers moved to running back and Jaeger Bull opted to transfer. That leaves Jack Bradley and Robert French as the only remaining players in the tight end room that have seen meaningful snaps in the regular season. Reinforcements were needed and Rice has found them.

Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 230 pounds, Groen appeared in nine games at Saddleback. He caught 14 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown, average 10.9 yards per catch. But that might not paint a complete picture regarding how Rice plans to involve him in the offense.

Groen has already updated his Twitter bio to reflect his recent pledge and it reads very simply, “Rice FB”. Fullbacks don’t exactly grow on trees and often are developed from able players who slide backward from the offensive line or tight end.

Departing tight end Bull is a great example of how the Owls might utilize Groen, primarily as a blocker with the ability to leak out of the formation as needed. The first few clips of his highlight reel showcase that ability. He moves well in the open field and can get to the next level. He’ll fit in well with what Rice wants to do.

“Tough Cards”: Rice Women’s Basketball forced to deal with extremely thin roster

January 19, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice women’s basketball has endured a challenging month and the road ahead promises to be equally grueling, in part because of the limitations of an extremely thin roster.

Head coach Lindsay Edmonds isn’t one to make excuses, but she couldn’t avoid discussing the state of Rice women’s basketball’s current roster following a tough home loss to Western Kentucky last week. The game was the first home contest for the Owls since December 11, more than a month ago. Part of the reason for the lengthy delay was the sheer quantity (or lack thereof) of bodies the program had available to put on the court.

Rice women’s basketball faces severe depth issues, further amplified by two recent injuries. Alexis Stover tore her ACL and had surgery last week. She will miss the remainder of the season. Katelyn Crosthwait will have surgery on her meniscus this week and will be out for at least four weeks. There’s some optimism she’ll be able to return by late February or early March. At a minimum, she’ll miss the majority of the Owls’ remaining season.

“We looked over at Western Kentucky warming up…

NFL Owls Update

Chris Boswell – PK, Steelers

Boswell did not attempt any field goals in his lone playoff appearance of the season but did drive all three of his extra points attempts through the posts. He and the Steelers were eliminated from the NFL Playoffs in the Wild Card Round.

Nick Leverett– OL, Bucs

Leverett was inactive for the Bucs Wild Card round game against the Eagles and did not see action. That proved perilous for the Bucs who lost tackl Tristian Wirfs midway through the game to injury and was unable to return. Center Ryan Jansen also missed time with an injury. Leverett has already seen spot duty because of injuries to players ahead of him on the depth chart this year. He may be needed again in the Playoffs.

Offseason Owls

  • The Atlanta Falcons have signed wide receiver Austin Trammell to a futures contract.
  • The Seattle Seahawks have signed defensive tackle Myles Adams to a futures contract.

More Owls in the NFL

From practice squads to current free agents, there are other Owls on the cusp of returning to active rosters. Find more detail on current contractual agreements and former Rice football players waiting for their next opportunity here.

WKU 127 112 10-7 (2-2)
Kenpom rankings and standings as of 1/16/2022

Key Storylines

One above the rest, sort of

On the court, it’s hard to argue any Conference USA basketball team has been more impressive this season than Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs boast a sterling 15-3 record and are one of two unbeaten programs in league play — they’ve also played four more games than Charlotte.  But they’re still behind both North Texas and UAB in KenPom and NET, partly because their best C-USA win came over 10-7 WKU. They’ll have the opportunity to change that this coming weekend with a home tilt against UAB.

Big movers

Two programs have seen big movements in their KenPom ratings since our last Conference USA basketball update, Marshall and Middle Tennessee. The Thundering Herd have toppled 50 spots from 155 to 205 thanks to an 0-4 start in league play, Meanwhile, Middle Tennessee is u 47 slots despite their 2-2 start. Wins against Florida Atlantic and FIU aren’t too impressive, but at least their losses (North Texas and Rice, both on the road) are excusable, all things considered.

Every other program is within 25 spots of where they were ranked two weeks ago.

COVID continues

Although last season was expected to face the strongest headwinds from COVID-19, this campaign has been almost equally challenging for some squads. While Louisiana Tech has gotten six conference games in over the span of three weeks, eight of the remaining 13 teams have played four or fewer games. For most, that meant multiple conference games have been postponed. Who plays whom and when could have a bearing on the standings down the road. If nothing else, it will be something to monitor closely.
