Rice Football: 2022 Spring semester roster notes

February 5, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football roster has seen some significant changes since the Owls last played a game. Here are the most prominent adjustments.

Roster churn impacts every college program in the country and the changes have only been exacerbated by the ever-changing transfer climate. Rice football has experienced a large number of adjustments to its roster from where things left off last season. Some of those shifts can be attributed to transfers, others involve players who have left the program for one reason or another.

This update highlights which key players have been left off the most recently released roster as of the end of January as well as incoming spring enrollees and various notes regarding position shifts, number changes and more.

Rice Football 2021: Offensive changes before Texas Southern game

September 22, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football has turned its focus to Texas Southern, including a few personnel changes on offense, both planned and unplanned.

Once again, the starting lineup for the Rice football offense will look different the next time it takes the field. There’s likely to be an adjustment at the quarterback spot, one we’ll cover in greater detail in the subsequent update, but there were also some notable adjustments on the offensive line and the pass-catching options.

Rice Football 2021: Pre-Texas offensive tweaks and practice notes

September 15, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football needs to rebound on offense in the worst way this week. Here’s what’s changing headed into the Texas game and some other practice notes.

Neither side of the ball was happy with how they performed against Houston last Saturday. Noticeably eager to put rinse the bad taste away, Rice football hit the practice field hard this week getting in work despite a minor disruption from Hurrican Nicholas.

Rice Football 2021 Spring Ball Review: Offense

April 12, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football spring practices are complete. What did we learn about the offense and where does it stand entering the summer?

The Rice football defense was more or less a known commodity entering the spring. The offense had more question marks. Some of those were answered — running back, wide receiver — while others remain unsettled.

We’ll tackle quarterbacks in a separate post. That battle was and will continue to be crucial to the Owls’ long-term prospects on this side of the ball. First, we’ll look at their playmakers and the guys protecting them in the trenches.

Rice Football Film Room 2020: Middle Tennessee Review

October 28, 2020 By Carter

Rice Football has one game in the books. We learned a lot about this team, both good and bad in this week’s edition of the film room.

Well, that was a heartbreaker, wasn’t it? Normally after a disheartening loss like that, I’d be tempted to put it all behind us and use the Film Room to preview the next week’s opponent. The problem there is that Southern Miss, this week’s opponent, is now on their third head coach and possibly third quarterback of the year? So I don’t even know what that offense (the only part of this USM team really worth discussing) is going to look like at this point. Plus, I really do think there are some positives to take away from the MTSU game.

Key mistakes early put Rice in a big hole, and conservative playcalling plus an absurdly improbable doomed the Owls in overtime. But the Owls dominated the game between the middle of the third quarter and the end of regulation, outsourcing MTSU 21-6 over that time period. If Rice can recreate the efficiency they displayed on both sides of the ball during that stretch, they’ll be in good shape going forward. Let’s look at a play from each side of the ball from that run of solid play.
