2020 Conference USA Basketball Tournament: Men’s and Women’s Previews

March 10, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

Both Rice basketball teams qualified for the Conference USA Basketball Tournament in Frisco, Tx. Here’s a preview of the action.

The Favorite: North Texas

Perhaps the biggest surprise story in college basketball this season, North Texas came out of nowhere to pace Conference USA. The Mean Green are the No. 1 seed with a 14-4 record and at least one head-to-head win over every team in the conference. North Texas is extremely balanced on offense with the No. 1 scoring defense.

The Contender: Louisiana Tech

As good as North Texas has been, they’re far from a shoe in. Louisiana Tech is one of the hottest teams in C-USA. They beat North Texas in bonus play and won five of their last six games, finishing one win shy of the Mean Green for the No. 1 overall seed. Ken Pomery tabs Tech as the favorite to win the title.

The Sleeper: Marshall

It’s hard to see any of the lower seeds stringing together four consecutive wins, but of the middle-tier seeds, Marshall is an intriguing pick. The Thundering Herd are the fourth best scoring offense in C-USA and they rebound well. If they can limit the turnovers, they’re talented to play with anyone in the conference.

The case for Rice

Rice basketball goes as their shooting goes. When Rice shoots 50 percent from the field, they win. The Owls are 10-10 when they make at least half of their shots, and that includes wins over 1-Seed North Texas and first round opponent FIU. If Rice gets hot, they’ll be dangerous. Inconsistency has been their Achilles heel.

The Favorite: Rice

Rice women’s basketball had a 30-game conference winning streak snapped during the season by Old Dominion. The Owls later got revenge, topping the Monarchs in the regular season finale to clinch the outright regular season title. A battle tested team peaking at the right time, it’s hard to bet against Rice.

The Contender: Old Dominion

Old Dominion is on a very short list of programs who were able to prove they belong with the streaking Owls. While Rice relies on two primary pieces, Old Dominion is incredibly balanced. They play tenacious defense and can score from all over the court. If Rice doesn’t win, Old Dominion would be the obvious next team up.

The Sleeper: Charlotte

Charlotte holds the lone distinction of the only team in C-USA to beat both Rice and North Texas. Led by Jade Phillips, the 49ers got off to a slow start before catching fire midseason. She has the talent to take over a tournament. If any team is going to take down both Old Dominion and Rice, Charlotte could be the team to do it.

The case for Rice

The chalk pick to cut down the nets in the preseason. Through a full season, it’s hard to doubt Rice women’s basketball. They’ve had their ups and downs, but their defense and the inspired play of Erica Ogwumike will give them a shot against any opponent, C-USA or otherwise.

Schedule – Men / Women

First Round

Rice Men: Wednesday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. vs Marshall – ESPN+
Rice Women: Bye

Second Round

Rice Men: TBD
Rice Women: Thursday, March 12 at 11 a.m. vs Marshall/Southern Miss – Watch Stadium

CUSA Baseball Tournament spots wide open entering final weekend

May 13, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

A busy weekend for CUSA Baseball set the stage for a chaotic finish to the regular season during the final weekend.

Notable weekend results

1. Rice makes a statement (more)

It’s been a back and forth year for Rice coach Matt Bragga in his first season at the helm. His team has had it’s low points, but the Owls took two of three from league-leading Southern Miss over the weekend. With series wins over the Golden Eagles and Louisiana Tech, Rice has proven they can hang with the conference’s best when they bring their A-game.

2. Blazers poised for big breakthrough?

UAB has sat at the bottom of the conference standings since the conference slate began. It’s been nearly a foregone conclusion the Blazers wouldn’t be playing in the postseason, but a series win over Charlotte has kept the door open. Entering the final weekend UAB is one win out of the eighth spot, the final postseason eligible team. It’s going to take some work, but there is hope in Birmingham.

3. Marshall swept

As UAB surged, Marshall swooned. Rather than position themselves for a low-pressure weekend against Rice, Marshall firmly in must-win mode after being swept by Old Dominion. Four CUSA teams have 11 wins and two of them aren’t going to Biloxi. That’s not where Marshall wanted to find themselves, but here they are.

Standings

Team CUSA Overall
1 FAU 19-8 34-17
2 Southern Miss 19-8 32-17
3 WKU 15-11-1 24-24-1
4 Louisiana Tech 15-12 32-30
5 Old Dominion 14-13 32-18
6 Rice 14-13 23-28
7 Marshall 11-15 24-26
8 UTSA 11-15 24-27
9 FIU 11-16 22-29
10 MTSU 11-16 18-33
11 Charlotte 10-16-1 19-29-1
12 UAB 10-17 25-27

Upcoming series of note

1. MTSU vs FAU

MTSU hasn’t won a conference series since taking two of three from UAB on the weekend of April 12. Still, somehow the Blue Raiders have real postseason aspirations. They’ll have to go through FAU who needs to outperform Southern Miss to clinch the No. 1 seed.

2. Old Dominion at Western Kentucky

For the first time in school history, Western Kentucky has clinched a spot in the CUSA Baseball Tournament. WKU can secure the No. 3 seed and potentially knock Old Dominion out of the postseason. At the minimum, the Hilltoppers want to pick up momentum entering Biloxi.

3. UAB at Southern Miss

Losers of back-to-back CUSA series for the first time this season, Southern Miss is in danger of losing the No. 1 seed. To clinch the top spot, they’ll need to best UAB and finish a game ahead of FAU who beat USM two weekends ago. It’s a tough bar, but this is a team talented enough to do it. A sweep of UAB would be a good start.

Rice Women’s Basketball stays perfect, wins CUSA Title

March 16, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice women’s basketball stayed perfect, rallying in Frisco to win the Conference USA Tournament and clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament field.

A 30 game season came down to 40 minutes on a Saturday night in Frisco. Rice needed a win in the Conference USA Basketball Tournament to secure a trip to the NCAA Tournament. They got it, but it took every ounce of grit and competitiveness they had left.

Middle Tennessee made it clear from the opening possession they would not go quietly. The Lady Raiders were the clear aggressor through the first half, making active passes to set up four three-pointers in the first quarter and an early eight-point lead.

With the Rice offense struggling out of the gate, MTSU extended their lead to as many as 10 — the same margin Rice trailed by against Western Kentucky in the semis. It wouldn’t last.

Nancy Mulkey was the most consistent player for the Owls on both sides of the ball in the first half, scoring 13 points as she racked five blocks on the other end of the floor. She would finish with 24 points, eight blocks and five rebounds. Mulkey was named CUSA Tournament MVP for her efforts.

Digging deep when it counted

Nicole Iademarco jumpstarted the offense in the second half, hitting two big threes to spur a 7-0 run for the Owls. As Iademarco keyed in from long range, Mulkey’s confidence continued to grow on the interior. She turned around and took some semi-contested shots from the edge of the paint to help spark the Rice rally.

Syden Wiggins drained a floater in the key to take the lead in the third quarter. Rice relinquished it. Middle Tennessee threatened but was never able to regain a lead they’d held for the majority of the contest despite Conference USA Player of the Year Erica Ogwumike spending a considerable amount of time on the bench with foul trouble.

Ogwumike would return to the game with four fouls at the 4-minute mark of the fourth quarter. She promptly knocked down two free throws and drained a deep three, taking over when the team needed her most to secure the Owls’ first Conference USA Tournament Championship.

Survive and advance

As the confetti falls, the team can exhale and reminisce. Rice women’s basketball won an almost unbelievable amount of games this season. The 28 victories mark a program high — one of the countless records broken this season by a team which has already cemented themselves among the best in school history.

Winners of 21-straight and a perfect 19-0 against Conference USA opponents, Rice has blown past lofty preseason expectations and secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. For one day, they’ll enjoy the moment. On Monday they’ll discover who their next opponent will be. Then it’s back to business as they seek to build upon an already historic run.

Conference USA Tournament Day 2 Recap

March 14, 2019 By Matthew Bartlett

The Conference USA Basketball Tournament is underway at the Star in Frisco, Tx. Here’s how the second day of action played out.

And then there were eight. The quarterfinals have come to a close in Frisco and, for the most part, it’s been nearly all chalk up to this point. We’ll see if anyone can upset the status quo on Friday.

Conference USA Men’s Basketball Tournament

Wednesday Scores

1. Old Dominion def 8. Louisiana Tech, 57-56
5. UAB def 4. UTSA, 85-76
2. Western Kentucky def 10. North Texas, 67-51
3. Southern Miss def 6. Marshall, 82-73

Wrapping up Day 3

It literally took a full 40 minutes for 1-Seed Old Dominion to survive an advance, knocking off 8-Seed Louisiana Tech on a last-second three to pull ahead. The Monarchs haven’t advanced to the finals of the conference tournament as a top four seed yet, despite being the 3-seed in 2015 and 2017 and the 2-seed in 2018. 1-Seed haven’t fared well in this tournament recently, making Thursday’s scare all the more real.

Thursday Schedule

1. Old Dominion vs 5. UAB – 12:30 pm on CBS Sports Network
2. Western Kentuck vs 3. Southern Miss – 3 pm on CBS Sports Network

Conference USA Women’s Basketball Tournament

Wednesday Scores

1. Rice def 9. North Texas, 61-43
4. Western Kentucky def 5. Old Dominion, 74-60
2. UAB  def 7. Charlotte, 70-55
3. MTSU def 11. UTEP, 66-44

Wrapping up Day 3

On the heels of a double-overtime game on Wednesday, the women’s bracket produced minimal excitement in the quarterfinals. All four top seed advanced, winning by double-digits.

Rice allowed North Texas to stick around for a half before pulling away late to win by a comfortable margin while MTSU took a 43-21 lead into halftime and never looked back. The action should be much closer when the conference’s best teams meet on the hardwood on Friday.

Thursday Schedule

4. Western Kentucky vs 1. Rice – 5:30 pm on Stadium
3. MTSU vs 2. UAB – 8:00 pm on Stadium
