Notable Week 12 results – Standings

It lived up to the hype

UAB and UTSA have been on a collision course for the C-USA West title since the season began. The meeting between these two C-USA heavyweights have been circled on the calendar for months, and boy, oh boy, did it deliver. UTSA quarterback Frank Harris found tight end Oscar Cardenas for the game-winning touchdown on the final play of the game. For the first time in three years, it’ll be UTSA rather than UAB repping the West in the Conference USA Championship Game.

Who needs a quarterback?

Southern Miss almost took UTSA by surprise last week when they debuted an offense centered around Frank Gore Jr. and the wildcat package. They stuck to that script against this week, this time having more than enough in the way of explosive plays to overcome Louisiana Tech and clinch their first C-USA win of the season.

Owls spiraling

It’s been a tough month to be an Owl. Both Rice and Florida Atlantic are winless in November, with FAU dropping its third straight game on Saturday and Rice falling for the fourth straight time. FAU had conference championship aspirations. Rice sought a bowl game. Both programs are returning to their roosts empty-handed.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

For the East

The West was decided in Week 12 when UTSA topped UAB. Now it’s time for the Roadrunners to learn who they’ll be playing in the conference title game. In what amounts to a semifinal on the other side of the bracket, Western Kentucky visits Marshall. Winner gets UTSA.

Miners on the move

UAB and UTEP enter the final week of the regular season with identical 7-4 records, but UAB holds a slight lead edge in the conference standings with a 5-2 record compared to the Miners at 4-3. Should UTEP find a way to pull off the upset, they’d finish second in the West, a tremendous accomplishment for a program seeking its first 8-win season for the first time since 2005, their first year in Conference USA.

Tale of two halves

Old Dominion took down an FCS team in its home opener, but otherwise lose the first six games against FBS teams. The Monarchs picked up their first FBS win against Louisiana Tech in late October and haven’t stopped since. ODU has won four in a row and needs one more win in their season finale against Charlotte to clinch bowl eligibility, an incredible opportunity after a 1-6 start.

Charlotte at LA Tech L, 42-32 vs Marshall
FAU at Old Dominion L, 30-16 at WKU
FIU at MTSU L, 50-10 vs North Texas
LA Tech vs Charlotte W, 42-32 vs Southern Miss
Marshall vs UAB L, 21-14 at Charlotte
MTSU vs FIU W, 50-10 vs Old Dominion
North Texas vs UTEP W, 20-17 at FIU
Old Dominion vs FAU W, 30-16 at MTSU
Rice vs WKU L, 42-21 at UTEP
Southern Miss at UTSA L, 27-17 at LA Tech
UAB at Marshall W, 21-14 at UTSA
UTEP at North Texas L, 20-17 vs Rice
UTSA vs Southern Miss W, 27-17 vs UAB
WKU at Rice W, 42-21 vs FAU

Notable Week 11 results – Standings

Southern Miss scare

Owners of a seven-game losing streak, Southern Miss decided to throw everything they had against UTSA on Saturday… everything except a quarterback. And it almost worked. Frank Gore Jr. operated out of the wildcat for much of the game, completing two-of-three passes and running for 123 yards. This game was deadlocked at 17-17 well into the fourth quarter before UTSA was able to escape.

Monarchs heating up

Old Dominion has quietly won three games in a row. Before that, the Monarchs had been blasted by Western Kentucky (not unlike several other C-USA foes) and dropped one-score games to Marshall and UTEP. It took some time for the off-year dust to fall off, but Old Dominion is playing their best football of the year at the right time.

Miners trending backward

It wasn’t that long ago that UTEP was being mentioned amongst the best records in Conference USA. The miners were tied for the lead in the West through seven weeks, but have now dropped three in a row. Already at six wins, a bowl trip is secure, but the dreams of finishing near the top of the West took a hit when they fell to North Texas this past week.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

For the West

Opinions were split regarding C-USA West entering the 2021 season and folks fell into one of two camps. Some sided with Bill Clark and the UAB Blazers, the West Division champs three years running. Others felt UTSA and Jeff Traylor could continue their meteoric rise. Those two programs meet next weekend. The winner takes the West.

Controlling their own destiny

If Western Kentucky wins out, they win the East. The road to get there will be challenging, though. Up next is FAU, a team reeling from an upset at the hands of Old Dominion this past weekend. If Bailey Zappe and Co. continue to put up the points they could face the UTSA/UAB winner in a few weeks.

Bowl Battle

A mid-November tilt between Middle Tennessee and Old Dominion just much more interesting. The Monarchs kept bowl hopes alive with their win over Florida Atlantic. They need to more wins to reach the six-win plateau. MTSU needs one. This game could prove pivotal to both programs’ holiday plans.

Conference USA Football 2021: Week 10 C-USA Roundup

November 7, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

Conference USA Football was back in action this weekend. Here’s the latest from the teams on the gridiron in Week 10.

Team Week 10 Result Week 11
Charlotte vs Rice W, 31-24 (OT) at LA Tech
FAU vs Marshall L, 28-13 at Old Dominion
FIU vs Old Dominion L, 47-24 at MTSU
LA Tech at UAB L, 52-38 vs Charlotte
Marshall at FAU W, 28-13 vs UAB
MTSU at WKU L, 48-21 vs FIU
North Texas at Southern Miss W, 38-14 vs UTEP
Old Dominion at FIU W, 47-24 vs FAU
Rice at Charlotte L, 31-24 (OT) vs WKU
Southern Miss vs North Texas L, 38-14 at UTSA
UAB vs LA Tech W, 52-38 at Marshall
UTEP vs UTSA L, 44-23 at North Texas
UTSA at UTEP W, 44-23 vs Southern Miss
WKU vs MTSU W, 48-21 at Rice

Notable Week 10 results – Standings

30/31 – 24

Rice football now played three consecutive games with eerily similar scoring margins. They beat UAB 30-24, with a missed extra point keeping the winning team off the 31 point total. Then they dropped a 30-24 contest to North Texas with the final extra point not kicked because of overtime rules. On Saturday, they lost 31-24, with the extra point counting this time around because Rice wasn’t first to possess the ball. No matter how it happened, the last two close calls have stung.

And then there were two?

It’s not officially a two-horse race in the East, but there are two games remaining on the schedule that will, in all likelihood, decide the outcome of the division and both involved Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers took care of business against Middle Tennessee in Week 10 and Marshall beat FAU. That means the WKU/Marshall and WKU/FAU games are the most important games left in the race for the East.

Duel in the desert

Whether it was the release of any frustrations generated by their absence in the initial College Football Playoff rankings or simply UTEP falling back to earth, UTSA stormed into El Paso and left little doubt as to who the frontrunner in the West would be. The Roadrunners jumped out to a 30-9 lead at halftime and coasted to the win, improving to 9-0 on the season.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

Bowl watch

Western Kentucky, FAU and Charlotte can each clinch bowl eligibility with a win next week. No teams in the East can reach the six-win plateau, but Rice, North Texas and Old Dominion will be playing to keep their postseason hopes alives. One more loss by any of those three would bump them out of bowl eligibility.

Intradivisional showdown

UAB and Marshall are each in the running in their respective divisions and face off next week in Huntington. Both teams have proven mortal this season, but they’ve still managed to stand a head above everyone in the conference not-named UTSA. Neither team has much wiggle room if they want to stay in their respective races.

Looking for No. 1

FIU and Southern Miss enter Week 11 as the only teams in Conference USA without at least one conference win. The Golden Eagles will have to upend UTSA to get their first one while FIU draws a Middle Tennessee game, that while feisty, has proven fillable on several occasions this season. This might be the Panthers’ best chance to get in the win column in conference play.

Conference USA Football 2021: Week 9 C-USA Roundup

Conference USA Football was back in action this weekend. Here’s the latest from the teams on the gridiron in Week 9.

Team Week 9 Result Week 10
Charlotte at WKU L, 45-13 vs Rice
FAU vs UTEP W, 28-25 vs Marshall
FIU at Marshall L, 38-0 vs Old Dominion
LA Tech at Old Dominion L, 23-20 at UAB
Marshall vs FIU W, 38-0 at FAU
MTSU vs Southern Miss W, 35-10 at WKU
North Texas at Rice W, 30-24 at Southern Miss
Old Dominion vs LA Tech W, 23-20 at FIU
Rice vs North Texas L, 30-24 at Charlotte
Southern Miss at MTSU L, 35-10 vs North Texas
UAB — OFF —  — vs LA Tech
UTEP at FAU L, 28-25 vs UTSA
UTSA — OFF —  — at UTEP
WKU at Charlotte W, 45-13 vs MTSU

Notable Week 9 results – Standings

Sayonara FIU and Southern Miss

Southern Miss fans hoping for a quick turnaround under a new head coach have been in for a rough awakening. On a different, but equally taxing note, FIU fans have joined the Golden Eagle faithful awaiting as the only fanbases still awaiting their first conference win of the season. How bad is it? FIU head coach declined to speak with the media following his team’s shutout loss to Marshall.

Not so old Dominion Monarchs

For the first time since 2018, Old Dominion has beaten an FBS opponent. Louisiana Tech earned the honors on Saturday, dropping their fourth consecutive game after a 2-2 start to the season. The Bulldogs have six losses on the season and four of them have come by one score or less.

A wild week off

While working to fend off all comers for the services of head coach Jeff Traylor, UTSA fans also had the luxury of scouting box scores. Earning a Top 25 ranking last week, they were able to watch No. 19 SMU and No. 21 San Diego State suffer losses, opening the door for UTSA to climb higher as one of the top G5 teams in the nation.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

Sun Bowl Showdown

ESPN2 picked up what has the makings to be an exciting contest in the desert next weekend when a ranked UTSA squad visits a UTEP team coming off a tough road loss at FAU. The Miners were extremely competitive and still sit within one game in the loss column of UTSA in the standings. Whoever wins Saturday will control their own destiny in the West.

Up or down?

Every team has four conference games in the books so far. Of the 14 teams (currently) in Conference USA, only three hold .500 records (Rice, MTSU and Charlotte). The Owls and 49ers face each other next weekend, with the chance to separate themselves from the middle of the pack. The winner of this won gets one step closer to bowl contention while the loser faces a much steeper battle.

Battle for the East

Western Kentucky, Marshall and FAU sit in a three-way tie for first place atop the East Division. At least one of that trio won’t be there when the dust settles next week. Marshall travels to FAU in a pivotal game for the division title while WKU draws MTSU at home. There are several weeks left in the season, but this weekend will be huge.

Conference USA Football 2021: Week 8 C-USA Roundup

October 23, 2021 By Matthew Bartlett

Conference USA Football was back in action this weekend. Here’s the latest from the teams on the gridiron in Week 8.

Team Week 8 Result Week 9
Charlotte  vs FAU (Thrs) L, 38-9 at WKU
FAU at Charlotte (Thrs) W, 38-9 vs UTEP
FIU vs WKU L, 34-19 at Marshall
LA Tech vs UTSA L, 45-16 at Old Dominion
Marshall — OFF —  — vs FIU
MTSU at UConn (Fri) W, 44-13 vs Southern Miss
North Texas vs Liberty L, 35-26 at Rice
Old Dominion — OFF —  — vs LA Tech
Rice at UAB W, 30-24 vs North Texas
Southern Miss — OFF —  — at MTSU
UAB vs Rice L, 30-24 — OFF —
UTEP — OFF —  — at FAU
UTSA at Louisiana Tech W, 45-16 — OFF —
WKU at FIU W, 34-19 at Charlotte

Notable Week 8 results – Standings

Bye-bye, Blazers

If Rice football was still feeling the aftereffects from their blowout loss to UTSA in Week 8, they didn’t show it in their first-ever trip to Protective Stadium. Rice struck first, pulled out a few tricks of their own and held on for their second win as a 23+ point underdog in as many seasons, knocking off the defending champs on the road and snapping UAB’s 15-game C-USA winning streak in the process.

Front(Road)runners

Entering the weekend, UAB and UTSA were tied atop the West standings along with UTEP. The Miners were off, but the other two top teams played and with the Blazers falling at home, UTSA leaves the weekend as the only 4-0 team in Conference USA. The Roadrunners will still have to face the Blazers this season (in San Antonio on Nov. 20), but for the time being, UTSA controls its own destiny.

Streak slipping?

Louisiana Tech has the longest-running streak of consecutive bowl appearances in Conference USA, but the Bulldogs are in danger of missing the postseason for the first time. They now sit at 2-5 with a road trip to UAB still on the schedule. The margin of error is shrinking in Ruston.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

Intrigue in the East

Florida Atlantic made an emphatic case to be the frontrunner in their Thursday night rout of Charlotte, but the 49ers still find themselves near the top of the division standings. So too, does Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers visit Charlotte in Week 9 in a game that could — at the very least — put one team firmly out of contention, should they fail to win it.

Taking advantage of your chances

It’s been a tough season for Southern Miss, and although it might take longer than some in Hattiesburg would like for this team to regain their swagger, they’ll have a golden opportunity in front of them in Week 9. Fresh off a bye against a Middle Tennessee game that has been erratic, the Golden Eagles will have one of their better shots at a win. They’d best take advantage of it.

Testing UTEP

UTEP didn’t play this past weekend, still the bowl-eligible Miners find themselves right near the top of the West standings. But they’ve yet to beat anyone with a winning record. They’ll have the chance to do just that in Week 9 when they travel to FAU. If they can beat FAU on the road, it’ll be hard not to take this team seriously moving forward.
