This week in CUSA – Looking ahead at Week 3

September 10, 2018 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football fell to Hawaii in Week 2 and enters their bye week 1-2. How did the rest of the conference fare and what’s next for the Conference USA football in Week 3?

Team Last Week Result This Week
Charlotte vs App State L, 45-9 at ODU
FAU vs Air Force W, 33-27 vs Bethune-Cookman
FIU at ODU W, 28-20 vs UMass
LaTech vs Southern W, 54-17 BYE
Marshall vs E Kentucky W, 32-16 at South Carolina
MTSU vs UT-Martin W, 61-37 at Georgia
North Texas vs Incarnate Word W, 58-16 at Arkansas
ODU vs FIU L, 28-20 at Charlotte
Rice at Hawaii L, 43-29 BYE
Southern Miss vs ULM L, 21-20 at App State
UAB at Coastal Carolina L, 47-24 vs Tulane
UTEP at UNLV L, 52-24 at Tennessee
UTSA vs Baylor L, 37-20 BYE
WKU vs Maine L, 31-28 vs Louisville

Notable Week 2 results

Rice — Positive returns in Owls’ second tough-luck loss

A 1-2 start was what most analysts projected entering the bye week, but Rice played Hawaii tougher than anyone else has yet and came close to pulling off the upset. The rebuild at South Main is ahead of schedule

Western Kentucky – Hilltoppers collapse at home

One would think that a 21-0 lead over a Maine team that completed less than 50 percent of their passes and converted 5-of-18 third downs would be enough to secure a victory. It wasn’t. The Hilltoppers blew what could have been the first when of the season and Mike Sanford is catching flak.

UTSA – Roadrunners can’t recreate Baylor upset

A year removed from a win over the Bears, the Roadrunners did not have an answer for the speed Baylor possessed on the outside. Jalen Hurd and Denzel Mims each tallied eight catches for 130+ yards and a touchdown.

Week 3 storylines

Bounce back opportunities

Western Kentucky draws a Louisville team that benched their starting quarterback Jawan pass midway through a win over Indiana State. The talent gap is still there, but no the quarterback drama gives WKU a chance.

Charlotte gets Old Dominion in Week 3, a much easier task than an App State team that came close to upsetting Penn State in Week 1. The 49ers are looking for their first Conference win since they defeated UAB in overtime on Oct. 21, 2017.

And then there were three

Only three unbeaten Conference USA teams remain entering Week 3: Louisiana Tech, Marshall and North Texas. The Mean Green have the best chance to stay perfect — they travel to play an Arkansas squad that found a way to squad a big lead against a hapless Colorado State team in Week 2.

Can FAU continue to settle in?

The Owls were crushed in Norman by the Oklahoma Sooners to start the season but bounced back with a win over Air Force last weekend. This team is expected to compete for the Conference USA title, but there are still a few kinks that need to be worked out.

One question that doesn’t need solving? Quarterback. Redshirt sophomore Chris Robinson, who passed for 471 yards against Air Force, should be in for another big day against Bethune-Cookman.

This week in CUSA – Looking ahead at Week 2

September 3, 2018 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football fell to Houston in the Bayou Bucket. How did the rest of the conference fare and what’s next for the Conference USA football in Week 2?

Team Last Week Result This Week
FAU Oklahoma L, 63-14 vs Air Force
Rice Houston L, 45-27 at Hawaii
Marshall Miami (OH) W, 35-28 vs E Kentucy
ODU Liberty L, 52-10 vs FIU
Charlotte Fordham W, 34-10 vs App State
Louisiana Tech South Alabama W, 30-26 vs Southern
FIU Indiana L, 38-28 at ODU
Southern Miss Jacksonville St W, 55- 7 vs ULM
North Texas SMU W, 46-23 vs Incarnate Word
UTEP Northern Arizona L, 30-10 at UNLV
Middle Tennessee Vanderbilt L, 35- 7 vs Tenn-Martin
UTSA Arizona St L, 49- 7 vs Baylor
UAB Savannah St W, 52-0 at Coastal Carolina

Notable Week 1 results

Rice — Bayou Buckets stays with the Houston Cougars

Rice football fell to Houston in a wild shootout at South Main. The Owls were able to hang around in large part because of a strong performance by their wide receivers and quarterback Shawn Stankavage.

FAU — No upset in Norman

FAU was a trendy upset pick entering the week but this one was all Oklahoma from the start. Star running back Devin Singletary was held to 69 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries as the Sooners cruised to an easy victory behind a strong performance from Kyler Murray.

UTEP – Miners’ rebuild already behind schedule

UTEP odds to win their season opener sat at relatively a coin flip entering their game against Northern Arizona. After going winless last season, this was their chance to rediscover the win column. Not only did it not happen, UTEP was never really close. It could be another long season in El Paso.

Week 2 storylines

First CUSA matchup on deck

FIU hosts Old Dominion in the first Conference USA conference game of the season. Both programs started the season with a loss, but FIU’s close loss to Indiana looks much more favorable to the beatdown the Monarchs suffered at the hands of newly minted FBS squad, Liberty. FIU is currently a 2-point home favorite.

Power Play

UTSA made a bold scheduling decision. The Roadrunners are the only CUSA team to play back to back Power 5 teams to open to the season. UTSA was blown out by Arizona State last weekend, making their odds against Baylor less than favorable. But you can’t win the game if you don’t play it? Right UCF?

Can North Texas stay fine?

North Texas quarterback Mason Fine continues to receiver murmurs of praise from the national football media. The Mean Green’s gunslinger is coming off a 444-yard, three touchdown game and could be in for a bigger game on Saturday against Incarnate Word.

This week in CUSA – Looking ahead at Week 1

August 27, 2018 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football was the only Conference USA football team in action in Week 0. The Owls defeated Prairie View at home. What’s next for the CUSA squads in Week 1?

Your weekly check in for all things Conference USA is underway. CUSA went a perfect 1-0 in the opening weekend of college football as the Rice Owls bested Prairie View at home. It was a nailbiter with several notable takeaways for the Owls and their new head coach. Most importantly, their culture of Intellectual Brutality survived its first test.

Week 0 results

Rice 31 – Prairie View 28

Week 1 games

  • Savannah State at UAB (Thr)
  • Western Kentucky at Wisconsin (Fri)
  • FAU at Oklahoma
  • Houston at Rice
  • Marshall at Miami (OH)
  • Old Dominion at Liberty
  • Fordham at Charlotte
  • Louisiana Tech at South Alabama
  • Indiana at FIU
  • Jackson State at Southern Miss
  • SMU at North Texas
  • Northern Arizona at UTEP
  • Middle Tennesse at Vanderbilt
  • UTSA at Arizona State

Week 1 storylines to follow

FAU’s upset bid

Devin Singletary and FAU against the might Oklahoma Sooners will be a game watched well beyond the typical Conference USA spectrum of fans. Oklahoma starts MLB Draft pick and $5 Million man against Lane Kiffin and the upset-minded Owls. FAU enters as a hefty underdog (21.5 points) but there’s always a chance things could get weird.

UTEP’s quest for No. 1

UTEP went winless in 2017, falling to Rice in a battle of cellar dwellers. The Miners host Northern Arizona this weekend. If they can’t beat NAU, it could set up another tough season in El Paso. ESPN FPI currently has the odds dead even at 50-50.

FIU has the potential to surprise

Butch Davis led his FIU squad to eight wins last season and hosts an Indiana squad that won’t be very good this year. If Conference USA is going to get an upset over a Power 5 program in Week 1 the Panthers have the best chance to make that happen.
