Rice Football 2023: UConn presser quotes and depth chart

October 3, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football hosts UConn this week. Here’s what Mike Bloomgren had to say about the matchup at hand and a few depth chart notes.

Head coach Mike Bloomgren and a set of players met with the media for their customary weekly availability. They recapped last week’s game and looked ahead at their upcoming matchup with UConn.

Listen Now: The Roost Pod – Breaking down Rice Football vs USF

We touch on those items, then dig into the Rice football depth chart and what the team looks like heading into the weekend. First, the quotes:

Press Conference Quotes

“Looking back at the film from all three phases of ECU, it’s exactly how we felt after the game. It was certainly not to our standard. We can play a lot better. But that’s really cool as [The Roost] pointed out the other night at the presser, when you can not play your best and we have a big enough margin for error to still find a way to win those games. It’s really nice. It speaks to what we’ve brought in this building. It speaks to how hard these players have worked. But it’s not how we want to live.” – Mike Bloomgren on learnings from the ECU game

“We’re aware that there record does not reflect the team that they are. They are a talented football team. They are a well coached football team. They have many players on both sides of the ball that would be very good players in the American Conference, there’s no doubt in my mind as I watch them play, how hard they play.”– Mike Bloomgren on UConn

“It was better. It was nowhere near the standard. It is not good enough in terms of what I’ve talked about. I don’t need to be balanced in terms of percent of run to pass, but I do want to be able to run the ball whenever we need to run the ball, and that includes 4-minute situations. We were not able to gain enough confidence in what we were doing to call runs like I would have wanted to in 4-minute.” – Mike Bloomgren on the running game

“As you see on a week to week basis, pretty much every pass is a catchable ball. He makes our job a lot easier and it’s up to us to kind of make his job as easy as we can too.” – Wide receiver Rawson MacNeill

“They’re a group of dogs. You can tell when you watch film that they really want it. They’re hungry… definitely a team that we cannot take lightly and we got to take our same preparation as we do every week.” – Safety Marcus Williams

Depth Chart Notes

Bloomgren announced on Tuesday offensive tackle Brad Baur would be out for the season. Clay Servin didn’t get the start last week, but finished the game at left tackle. He’s back with the first string this week with Miguel Cedeno backing him up. The rest of the depth chart is unchanged from last week. We’ll have more updates on the latest on injuries and the plan for Saturday later this week for subscribers.

The Roost Podcast | Ep 162 – Rice Football beats ECU for first AAC win

October 3, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football rebounded from a tough loss to USF with their first-ever AAC win, beating East Carolina at home in a gritty win.

Quarterback JT Daniels was playing hobbled and the defense gave up yards in bunches, but both beleaguered units made the plays when it mattered most, lifting Rice football to its first-ever AAC win. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.  Let’s recap the game.

Offense

Calvin Anderson – OT, Patriots

Similar to Week 3, Anderson saw only special teams duty this week after starting each of the Patriots’ first two games.

Kylen Granson – TE, Colts

Granson hauled in two passes for 24 yards on Saturday while being targeted five times, which tied wide receiver Michael Pittman for the team lead.

Nick Leverett – OT, Buccaneers

Leverett was active for the Bucs again this week, but did not see action in their Week 3 game against the Eagles.

Austin Trammell – WR, Rams

Trammell did not record any receptions against the colts, but he did serve as the teams’ primary punt return, returning four punts for 15 yards on Sunday.

Defense

Myles Adams – DL, Seahawks

Adams saw his most extensive work of the season on Monday Night Football, racking up four tackles and one sack against the Giants. The sack was one of 11 on the night for the Seahawks and the first of Adams’ career.

Elijah Garcia – DL, Broncos

Garcia registered a tackle in the Broncos’ win over the Bears in Week 4, his first official statistic recorded since an opening week loss to the Raiders.

Special Teams

Jack Fox – P, Lions

Fox punted four times on Thursday night against the Packers, averaging 45 yards per punt and downing one of his kicks inside the 20. His longest ball of the night traveled 52 yards.

Chris Boswell – K, Steelers

Boswell scored the Steelers’ lone points on Sunday, connecting on a pair of short field goals, the longest of which came from 35 yards out. In lieu of any touchdowns, Boswell’s pair of kicks represented the teams’ only points.

Rice Football 2023 Game Preview: UConn

October 1, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football hosts UConn in their final nonconference game of the season. How to watch, key stats, x-factor picks and more.

Rice football rallied in the fourth quarter to beat East Carolina at home last weekend. UConn thought they’d managed a similar turnaround, only to see their potential game-tying extra point extra point blocked. The Huskies enter this game 0-5. Rice is 3-2. Here’s everything you need to know about this week’s matchup between Rice and UConn.

Kickoff time | 4:00 PM CT
Venue | Rice Stadium – Houston, TX
TV | ESPN+ (Viewing Guide)
Radio | Varsity Radio App (Online)

Audio / Visual Preview

We’ll preview Rice football vs UConn on this week’s episode of the Blue and Gray Preview Show, streaming live on Wednesday at Noon on the Rice Athletics YouTube channel. Look for a recap of the game on the site afterward as well as on The Roost Podcast, which should be released early next week.

Sizing up the contenders

Everything has seemingly gone wrong for Jim Mora and company this year. A sixth loss wouldn’t officially eliminate them from postseason — a five-game deficit feels insurmountable already — but the mood around the program would certainly further decay. As for the Owls, Rice could move two games above .500 and enter the bye week within two games of a second consecutive bowl berth.

UConn X-Factor | Take some risks, offensively

The Huskies have not been that productive as an offense through five games, averaging a meager 17.0 points per game, sixth worst in the country. East Carolina wasn’t exactly a juggernaut coming into its bout with Rice either, but the Pirates were able to move the ball against the Owls, albeit without finding the endzone enough.

The Rice defense has been chaotic all season long, mixing havoc plays and turnovers in with long pass plays and poor tackling at times. If previous games are any true indicator, UConn is going to have opportunities. They need to force the issue and make Rice bring their A-game on defense, which has allowed several quarterbacks to post great games against them thus far.

Road underdogs, UConn isn’t winning this game without some fortunate bounces. They’re certainly shouldn’t plan on outdueling a Rice offense that, while disjointed at times, has proven to be effective more often than not when JT Daniels is on the field.

Rice X-Factor | Pound the Rock

Head coach Mike Bloomgren has mentioned his willingness to lean into the pass this season if it helps his team win football games, but even he will admit posting back to back sub-40-yard rushing games isn’t going to get it done. Rice needs to find a way to run the football rather than waiting on JT Daniels to bail them out, even if No. 18 has managed to do so time and time again.

UConn has allowed more rushing touchdowns than more than 100 FBS teams. The Huskies have been respectable in many of their other defensive metrics against the run, but when push comes to shove, they’ve been blown over with regularity.

Rice won’t face many other defenses this season that have been proven to be this susceptible to the ground game. It’s not quite a make-or-break moment, but this facet of the Owls’ attack is one of the lone stones left unturned so far this season. Getting the ground game going would be a huge confidence boost before the team heads into the bye week.

One Final Thing

Saturday was an ugly win for Rice football. The defense made the final plays, but got gashed along the way. The offense let a lot of points on the board and the special teams unit missed another important kick. Had the result been different, there would have been a lot of frustration with the performance, and frankly, some angst is justifiable.

That’s what makes this coming game so crucial. UConn is not a good football team, by any measure. The Huskies are winless with their closest losses coming against FIU and Utah State. Their defense has been gashed in all five games and their offense hadn’t shown much of a spark prior to putting up 33 points in a losing effort against Utah State last weekend.

This is a game Rice football is supposed to win. The Owls would like to believed they’ve graduated from playing “winnable” games to a team that takes care of business against so-called inferior opponents. Nobody from within the walls of the Brian Patterson center will verbalize it that way, but UConn is an inferior opponent. Rice should win, and win comfortably.

If the Owls can do that, they’ll be back on schedule, assuring many that the USF loss was a bump on the road to a season that can still become very special.

AAC Football 2023: Week 5 Roundup

September 30, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

AAC Football was back in action this weekend. Here’s the latest from the teams on the gridiron in Week 5.

Charlotte 1-4 at SMU L, 34-16  —
ECU 1-4 at Rice L, 24-17  —
FAU 1-3  —  — vs Tulsa

Navy 1-3 vs USF L, 44-30 vs North Texas
North Texas 2-2 vs ACU W, 45-31 at Navy

SMU 3-2 vs Charlotte W, 34-16  —

Tulsa 3-2 vs Temple W, 48-26 at FAU
UAB 1-4 at Tulane L, 35-23 vs USF
USF 3-2 at Navy W, 44-30 at UAB
UTSA 1-3 —  — at Temple

Notable Results (Standings)

Memphis delivers a message

Picked to finish fourth in conference in the preseason media poll, Memphis notched one of the most notable non-conference wins of any AAC school so far this season. The Tigers knocked off Boise State, staying perfect at home and putting themselves near the forefront of the conference race. They’re currently tied with Tulane as the only four-win teams in the league through five weeks.

Trouble in Greenville

UAB, Charlotte and FAU are all breaking in new head coaches. UTSA has dealt with some tough injury luck and a rigorous non-conference slate. ECU, on the other hand, has been relatively healthy but has no FBS wins to show for it. The Pirates fell on the road to Rice over the weekend, unable to overcome a hobbled JT Daniels or a Rice defense that had four fourth down stops in the second half.

Antennas raised

Neither South Florida and Tulsa had much in the form of expectations entering the 2023 seasons. With new coaches at the helm and plenty of question marks on the roster, a slow start would have been forgiven, if not expected. Instead, both programs are 3-2 and a combined 3-0 in conference play so far. Sustaining the hot starts will be a challenge, but they deserve credit for getting to this point.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

Make or break for the birds

It’s been a challenge start for both Temple and UTSA, who square off against each other in Week 6, UTSA’s first-ever AAC game. Should the Roadrunners falter, they’ll be 1-4 heading into the remainder of league play after being picked second in the preseason. Meanwhile Temple will look to prove their loss to Tulsa was a bad night instead of the continuance of a negative defensive trend.

How much fight is left?

FAU was dealt a tough blow when they learned starting quarterback Casey Thompson would miss the remainder of the 2023 season. Beaten and bruised, the Owls would be forgiven if they wrote 2023 off as a year where everything went wrong. That said, rallying despite the circumstances would be equally encouraging for Tom Herman and his staff in year one.

First to 100

South Florida has shown some sparks of life on defense so far this season. North Texas has not. For both, it hasn’t mattered too much because they have offenses that pile up the points in bunches. When they meet next weekend, one touchdown won’t be enough. Five might not either. This has shootout written all over it.
