June 21, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football recruiting had a productive camp weekend, observing future classes, issuing offers and grabbing some commitments along the way.

June is camp season. As the 2023 Rice football recruiting class continues to develop, the Owls’ staff is hard at work across the state, participating in various camps and even working one of their own right on their home turf. Rice hosted campers from across the country this past weekend, handing out a few offers and receiving a few commitments along the way. Here’s a quick rundown of the busy weekend at South Main.

Update from The Roost – Conference USA Football Season Preview coming soon

June 15, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Coming Soon: The Roost’s 2022 Conference USA Season Preview will be released on Wednesday, June 29th.

In years past, The Roost has offered two Preseason Preview digital magazines: one geared directly toward Rice football and another tailored to fans of all Conference USA teams. Starting this year, The Roost will be releasing one Conference USA Football Season Preview in lieu of the split offering.

The Preview will go on sale Wednesday, June 29th.

For Conference USA fans, nothing about your experience will change. You’ll still be able to purchase the preview from the site directly and it will have a similar look and feel to recent editions, with a few nuggets tucked in this year on the topic of conference realignment and the incoming members of the conference.

For Rice fans, this decision was made to streamline your access to Rice football content — and we’re not cutting anything. All position previews, individual superlatives and features that had been previously included in the Season Preview will be shared directly on Patreon over the next several weeks.

There’s now no need to purchase an additional Rice-specific preview. Simply pick up a copy of the conference preview (it’s cheaper than the Rice preview has been in the past!) and get everything else included in your Patreon subscription to The Roost.

Not a patron yet? Take advantage of this perk:

All first-time patrons on the Starting Lineup Tier that subscribe this summer (June 1 –> July 31) will receive a copy of the 2022 Conference USA Season Preview for FREE.

In addition to the season preview content you’ve come to expect, patrons all receive access to fall camp reports, practice notebooks, Q&As, recruiting analysis and more.

All eyes are on the newest Rice football wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, the focal point of our March 2022 Patreon Q&A. Rice Football 2022: Early Position by position confidence levels

May 31, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Spring ball is long gone and Rice Football is preparing to turn the page toward the 2022 season. How confident should we be in each position group?

Every Rice football position group entered the spring facing a different set of questions. For some, spring was about identifying starters. For others, it was assessing the depth and determining if reinforcements were needed. Not all those questions were answered, but we did learn enough to project how confident we might be in each position group heading into the 2022 season.

Aaron Smigelski’s debut season gives hope for Rice baseball

May 18, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

It’s been a tough year for Rice baseball, but freshman infielder Aaron Smigelski has been a bright spot. His ascent has given the Owls hope.

Trailing 15-0 on the second day of the 2022 season, Rice baseball head coach Jose Cruz Jr went to the bench for the final inning of at bats against No. 1 Texas. The game was all but decided at that point, but Cruz wanted to give everyone a chance to show him what they could do. The first to the plate in that frame was freshman Aaron Smigelski.

Whack.

The true freshman from Clayton, North Carolina laced a single up the middle. It was the Owls’ fifth hit of the day.
