Rice Football 2024: Houston Game Week Practice Report

September 12, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football takes on Houston with eyes on keeping the Bayou Bucket on South Main. Here’s what we learned from the Owls at practice this week.

Rivalry week is the best week. For Rice football, that means it’s time to battle for the Bayou Bucket against the University of Houston across town. How much does this game mean to the Owls? Veteran corner Sean Fresch, who will make his fourth start in this rivalry series on Saturday, tried to put it into words.

“I’m excited. It’s always fun to play against these guys. We don’t like them. They don’t like us. But I’m pretty sure we don’t like them a little more,” he said. I love getting to this week because all the guys are fired up, not like we don’t every week, but this week is just different, rivalry week.”

Here’s more on the game, some injury news on the Rice front and news from the practice field.

Depth chart check

Scheduling was tight this week with Bayou Bucket activities, so there was no formal press conference. I was able to get the depth chart, though, and there are a few changes this week from the initial depth chart which Rice football has kept consistent through each of the first two games.

Rice Football, depth chart

On offense, Chad Lindberg is listed as the starting left guard, a position he held last week but has now been formalized. On defense, Plae Wyatt has been taken off the two-deep. Marcus Williams and Peyton Stevenson move up the depth chart behind him. The only other change on defense is Andrew Awe moving in front of DJ Arkansas as the Owls’ starting Mike linebacker.

Enoch Gota, who handled all placekicking duties against Texas Southern, has been moved to the top of the depth chart above Tim Horn. While there is still an OR designation, Gota is expected to be the starter against Houston. There are no other official changes, but player availability might impact how the Owls take the field on Saturday.

Stepping In

Safety Plae Wyatt announced on social media this week he would miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, an injury he suffered in the loss against Sam Houston in Week 1. The leading tackler for the Owls last season, Wyatt’s loss is a big one for this defense. If there’s any consolation, it’s that the next man up, Marcus Williams, is far from an unknown commodity.

Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls Update – Sep 10

September 11, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

JT Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois continues to be productive when handed the ball. He had three opportunities to do so this week, going 3.0 innings while allowing one hit, two walks and striking out two. His lone rune allowed came in a 16-3 thumping of the Oakland Athletics so no harm done on that front.

Through Sep 10, Chargois has a 2.30 ERA with a 1.085 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Tristan Gray – Oakland Athletics

A recent addition to the Oakland organization, Gray made his debut with the A’s on September 1 and has now appeared in eight games with the organization, seven of them at home. He’s picked up three hits and is still looking for his first RBI of the season after a short cameo in May and early June with the Miami Marlins.

Through Sep 10, Gray is hitting .107 with one extra-base hits, three walks and 16 strikeouts. His OPS is .336.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon went on the injured list for the third time this season with an oblique strain. There’s only so much baseball left to be played this year so it’s possible this is the last time we’ll see Rendon on the diamond before the 2024 season, hopefully after an offseason to get healthy and return to old self.

Through Sep 10, Rendon is hitting .224 with 10 extra-base hits, 22 walks and 35 strikeouts. His OPS is .590 and he’s collected 11 RBI.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers’ strong season will be delayed several weeks. He was placed on the 60-day DL this week after initial landing on the injured list when he fractured his left ankle during a game against the Reds prior to the All-Star Break. .

Before he hit the IL, Myers was hitting .265 with eight extra-base hits, seven walks and 32 strikeouts. His OPS is .759 and he’s collected 14 RBI.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls began the season in AAA:

  • Matt Canterino – St Paul Saints (Twins)
  • Tyler Duffey – Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals)
  • Jon Duplantier – Oklahoma City Dodgers (Dodgers)
  • Tristan Gray – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) *promoted
  • Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds) *promoted and returned to AAA
  • Lucas Luetge – Worcester Red Sox (Red Sox)
  • Dane Myers – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) *promoted
  • Glenn Otto – El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres) *claimed by Astros

Rice Basketball Recruiting: F Evan Cochran commits to Owls

September 11, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice basketball has its third commitment of the 2025 recruiting class. Forward Evan Cochran from Houston has committed to the Owls.

Tuesday was a good day to be an Owl. The 2025 Rice Basketball recruiting class tripled in size, building on an initial pledge from guard Cameron Carroll from South Grand Prairie the Owls added a pair of new commitments, including a big one from forward Evan Cochran from The Village School right here in Houston, Texas.

Cochran picked Rice over a growing list of interested suitors. He had offers from Wichita State, Nevada, George Mason, Marshall, UTSA and others before deciding he wouldn’t be going very far from home at all to play his college ball.

“I really felt like the academic part of Rice was a fit for me, as well as the great coaching staff, the community, the campus, and more,” Cochran told The Roost. “I love the style of play Coach Lanier likes to play with, as it fits how I play the game as a player. I was impressed with the connection the coaches had with each other as well as with the players.”

Standing 6-foot-8, Cochran brings some size and physicality to a class that started with shooters. That’s something he says values highly and hopes to bring with him to campus.

“I take a lot of pride in rebounding and defense, which is especially something I improved on a lot over the summer,” he said. “Playing on the PRO16 circuit allowed me to compete with the best big men in the country and hold my own against them with defense and rebounding.

Cochran comes on board the same day as guard Boden Howell. Along with the aforementioned Carroll, the 2025 class now sits at three members, all from the high school ranks.

It’s one thing to be big, lots of athletes have that going for them. It’s another to be able to use that size to your advantage which is something that sticks out when you turn on Cochran’s film. He looks comfortable on the court and is aware of how to position himself for maximum impact as both a shooter and a rebounder, a strong foundation as he grows into the collegiate player head coach Rob Lanier and staff believe he will be.

Rice Basketball Recruiting: G Boden Howell commits to Owls

September 11, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice basketball has its second commitment of the 2025 recruiting class. Guard Boden Howell has committed to the Owls.

After a flurry of portal additions to ready the 2024-2025 roster, Rice Basketball has turned its attention to the future and the high school recruiting front. Roughly a week removed from the commitment of guard Cameron Carroll from South Grand Prairie the Owls have added a pair of new commitments, the first from guard Boden Howell of Meridian, Idaho.

Howell is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who picked up an offer from the University of South Dakota the same week as he received his Rice basketball offer in late July. Active in the AAU circuit, Howell got onto the Rice radar and stayed there. Howell averaged 20.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists as a junior last season, leading his team to a state championship where he earned All-State Tournament honors.

Howell comes on board the same day as forward Evan Cochran from The Village School in Houston. Along with the aforementioned Carroll, the 2025 class now sits at three members, all from the high school ranks.

The highlights have everything you want to see from a guard of Howell’s size, particularly the athleticism and how well he moves on the court. He can score off the dribble and on the drive, facilitates well to his teammates and is an experienced marksman from the outside. He’s a versatile player who plays the game with a high IQ and shoot fit in well with how coach Rob Lanier and company want to operate on the court.
