Rice Baseball 2025: MLB Owls Update – Jun 4

June 5, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2025 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are making the most of their time in The Show. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers was reinstated from the injured list prior to the Marlins’ May 30 game against the Giants and has appeared in six games since then, collecting a double and scoring a run. While his bat has been relatively quiet, his defense has spoken volumes:

— Miami Marlins (@Marlins) May 31, 2025

Through June 4, Myers is hitting .302 with seven extra-base hits, seven walks and 23 strikeouts. His OPS is .793 and he’s collected 14 RBI.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon is slated to miss a significant amount of time following him surgery this spring. The bad news is another bump in an injury-plagued stint with the Angels; Rendon missed a chunk of last season with an oblique strain.

Matt Canterino – Twins AAA

Canterino was thought to have a real chance to crack the big league roster at some point this season, converting himself to a reliver this offseason in hopes of limiting the stress on his arm and preserving his health. Unfortunately, he’s set to miss a third consecutive season, undergoing shoulder surgery in early March. The Twins since released him and signed him to a minor league contract while he rehabs.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls began the season in AAA:

  • Tristan Gray – Charlotte Knights (White Sox)
  • Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds)
  • Glenn Otto – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Astros)

Rice Football Recruiting: DE Quincy Tchikou commits to Owls

June 4, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2026 Rice Football recruiting class has its first addition on the defensive side of the ball. Cy Ranch defensive end Quincy Tchikou has committed to the Owls.

Following an initial burst of new additions on the offensive side of the ball, the 2026 Rice Football recruiting class has picked up its anchor in the defensive trenches from just down the road. Cy Ranch defensive end Quincy Tchikou has committed to the Owls.

Tchikou didn’t pick up his first D1 offer before February, then his recruitment began to take off in earnest. He received 15 offers over the ensuing months, holding off on any commitment decisions until Rice entered the fray with an offer in late May. That meant turning down overtures from San Diego State, Arkansas State, New Mexico State, Navy, Colorado State, Army, Air Force, Utah State, Tulsa and others.

“With Coach Abell and the new staff coming in, I can see a huge upward trend with the way the school is going football-wise,” Tchikou told The Roost.

Now that he’s locked in, Tchikou provides a building block for the Owls to work with as they add more defenders around him. The first wave of commitments all played on the offensive side of the ball, including quarterback Aiden Smalls, offensive lineman Clay Mitchell and tight end Colten Cole.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Tchikou is a disruptive force along the line who can line up across the front, but likely profiles as an edge player at the next level. His film is flush with excellent pursuit and a good first step. There’s a lot of upside with a player who already possesses such innate instincts like Tchikou.

“I feel like Rice is a place where I can hone my skills and become a better overall person,” Tchikou said. “I’m looking forward to working with this new program and getting better everyday.”

Rice Basketball Recruiting: G Jordan Williams commits to Owls

June 3, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

An SEC transfer has signed as the final addition to the 2025 Rice basketball recruiting class. Former Vanderbilt point guard Jordan Williams is officially an Owl.

Following an initial flurry of activity with the end of the season, rosters across the country have been trending closer and closer towards competition. The 2025 Rice Basketball recruiting class found its final member not too far from South Main. Houston native Jordan Williams has signed his grant-in-aid to play for the Owls this coming season.

Williams hails from Second Baptist High School not too far down the road, where he got his start, before initially signing with Texas A&M. He would redshirt in his lone season in College Station before transferring to Vanderbilt, where he saw action in 37 games, making 10 starts across the past two seasons.

Upon his signing, Rice basketball head coach Rob Lanier called Williams “an extremely competitive player who has the skill and aptitude on offense along with versality and grit on defense” as well as a player who “brings an abundance of something we cannot teach…toughness.”

He will likely be the final member of a transfer ground that includes players from across the country such as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi center Stephen Giwa, Prairie View A&M guard Nick Anderson, Mount St. Mary’s guard Dallas Hobbs and JUCO forward Eternity Eguagie.
