Rice Football 2025: Louisiana Game Week Practice Notes

August 28, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The first Rice football game of the Scott Abell era is upon us and the Owls are ready to go. Here’s the latest from the practice field this week.

The (unofficial) Rice football depth chart has mostly worked itself out. Chase Jenkins has started to put his mark on the offense and a few individual standouts have warranted notice in the last few days before the season opener.

Jenkins insists this team is ready to go and is as locked in as they could be before such an important game.

“It’s us versus anybody else,” he said this week. “I feel like we go to each game, home or away, wherever we play — we could play in a parking lot — we’re going to go out there with the same mindset each time and go out there and play our best and play our game and then the result will show.”

Rice Baseball 2025: MLB Owls Update – August 26

August 26, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2025 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are making the most of their time in The Show. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers saw a limited workload this week, appearing in two games as a defensive replacement with one start — in Saturday’s 12-inning marathon against the Blue Jays — in between. Myers went 1-for-6 at the plate in that small sample with a walk and a stolen base.

Through August 26, Myers is hitting .236 with 15 extra-base hits, 22 walks and 73 strikeouts. His OPS is .625. He’s collected 27 RBI and stolen 17 bases.

Tristan Gray – Tampa Bay Rays

Gray is on a hot streak right now. After entering last Tuesday’s game against the Yankees in the fifth inning and going 1-for-3 at the plate, Gray has built a four-game hitting streak, including a 2-for-3 game with his first home run of the season on Friday against the Cardinals, which put the team in front. He’s raised his batting average roughly 150 points this week.

Through August 26, Gray is hitting .214 with one walks and seven strikeouts in 29 plate appearances. He’s collected three RBI.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon has been out of the news since it was reported he would miss a significant amount of time following hip surgery this spring. There have been no updates from the Angels or his camp since then.

Matt Canterino โ€“ Twins AAA

Canterino underwent season-ending surgery this spring and was released by the Twins before subsequently signing back with the club on a minor league contract while he undergoes rehab.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls either began the season in AAA or have since been promoted to that level:

  • Evan Kravetz โ€“ Louisville Bats (Reds)
  • Glenn Otto โ€“ Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Astros)
  • Trei Cruz โ€“ Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers)
  • Hayden Durke โ€“ Reno Aces (Diamondbacks)

Rice Football 2025: Louisiana presser quotes and depth chart

August 26, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Next up for Rice football, the season opener against Louisiana. Here’s what head coach Scott Abell had to say about the matchup and a few depth chart notes.

Head coach Scott Abell and a set of players met with the media for their customary weekly availability. They recapped the end of fall camp and then looked ahead at their upcoming matchup with Louisiana.

The Roost Podcast: Previewing the Rice Football defense this season

We touch on those items, touch on the lack of a Rice football depth chart and what the team looks like heading into the weekend. First, the quotes:

Press Conference Quotes

Letโ€™s be clear, Louisiana is a 10-win team from last year opening up a brand new stadium. My guess is expectations, what theyโ€™re feeling, is probably a little bit more anxious that what weโ€™re feeling. We’re excited to play football. We’re excited to now put everything we’ve installed to work and see what it looks like at a very hostile environment on the road. I think all the pressureโ€™s on them. I think for our guys, let’s put his shoes on, let’s lace them up, letโ€™s tie time, and let’s go have some fun. Let’s get after and compete. That’s what I want to see. – Rice Football head coach Scott Abell on pressure in Week 1

Iโ€™m incredibly comfortable going into each week not really sure what we’re gonna see. When you’re a little unique offensively, game plans are unique against you. That is nothing new to meโ€ฆ How someone defends the previous week’s offense, it’s not going to look like how they defend us, so to me, these adjustments will be the same as I look at each and every week. – Rice Football head coach Scott Abell on what he’s expecting from the Louisiana defense

Heโ€™s incredibly multiple. He’s a guy that can get on the edge. He can be involved in the passing game and he can be a downhill guy. And man, thatโ€™s a really nice thing for any offense. He brings a lot of tools to that unit, now how do we utilize all those tools to make everything around him execute on a high level. – Rice Football head coach Scott Abell on running back Quinton Jackson

His ability to really utilize his legs and his arm to hurt defenses made a big impression on us. His ability to escape, to really make something out of nothing, I think is important in every offense and ours is no different. And the fact that heโ€™s comfortable in this system. He played a similar system coming out of high school. – Rice Football head coach Scott Abell on Chase Jenkins winning the quarterback job

Chase is like a brother to meโ€ฆ I think heโ€™s grown as a leader. Heโ€™s having fun. He has joy on his face. I’m just happy for him. People [will] get to see what I see every day in practice, his speed, his excitement for the game of football, his excitement to run his offense. I’m just happy for Chase. Glad he’s leading us and I’m willing to do anything for my quarterback, for sure. – Running back Quinton Jackson on playing with quarterback Chase Jenkins

Itโ€™s all about focusing, keeping our poise this week. I feel that’s the main thing that we’re gonna focus on this week, worrying about what weโ€™ve got going on, not worrying about the outside noise, what other people think, because that’s just a distraction. At the end of the day, what you put on tape is your resume, so we’re just gonna focus on what we’re gonna put on tape this week. – Linebacker Andrew Awe on the team’s focus this week

Depth Chart

There was no depth chart provided in the Rice football pregame notes this week. Louisiana had previously declined to provide a depth chart of their own, likely leading the Owls to forgo issuing their first official depth chart of the season in response.

Stay tuned to practice notes later in the week for an unofficial best estimate of the current two-deep. As a quick reminder, you can get access to practice reports, analysis and special features during the week when you subscribe to our Starting Lineup Tier on Patreon today.

Rice Football 2025 Game Preview: Louisiana

August 24, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football kicks off its first game of the 2025 season this week as the Owls travel to Louisiana. How to watch, key stats, x-factor picks and more.

Following months of anticipation, the Scott Abell era of Rice football arrives in earnest this week with the Owls’ season opening matchup against Louisiana. Can the new-look option attack surprise the Ragin’ Cajuns on the road? Here’s everything you need to know about the matchup between Rice and Louisiana.

Kickoff time | 7:00 PM CT
Venue | Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium – Lafayette, LA
TV | ESPN+ (Viewing Guide)
Radio | Varsity Radio App (Online)

Sizing up the contenders

This season opening game features two programs in very different places than they were when they last met in 2022. Rice football is hitting the reset button with a new coach and a new scheme. Louisiana, on the other hand, is a few years ahead of the Owls in that process. The Ragin’ Cajuns were in the hunt for the Group of 5 Playoff berth when the calendar turned to November a season ago and retain high expectations heading into 2025.

Louisiana X-Factor | Learning on the job

This is a vastly different Louisiana team from the one that Rice football met in Houston two seasons ago and even still quite different than the Cajuns’ team that had College Football Playoff hopes last fall. New starting quarterback Walker Howard has yet to see meaningful collegiate action. Ditto for key receiver Shelton Sampson, also an SEC transfer.

The defense is more of the same, with seven new starters on that side of the ball and their top tacklers from 2024 nowhere to be seen. Continuity with the coaching staff will help, but the reality is this is a team with a significant amount of new pieces that will be working together in the heat of battle for the first time.

Many of those learning curves will be smoothed out by the time Louisiana gets a few games under its belt, but in Week 1, much of that new-season jitters could still be in play.

Rice X-Factor | Protect the Football

Fumbles are momentum killers for any offense, but they are particularly crippling for option attacks. When the option is running smoothly, all parties involved are in sync, exchanges are seamless and the ball matriculates down the field with uneventful ease. Issues arise when everyone isn’t on the same page, wires are crossed and the ball ends up on the ground.

Repping this offense throughout the spring and into the fall camp was a good start, but there’s nothing that can completely replicate the rigor and strain of live action, full-tackle football against a quality opponent. The Owls are going to find out rather quickly just how regimented they have become in their reads and whether or not they can perform them with regularity when the lights come on.

Some hiccups along the way are to be expected, particularly with everyone on the offense being so new to this scheme. However, there isn’t a grace period when it comes to this season and the Owls aren’t opening against a lower-level cupcake. Too many mistakes on Saturday could result in an underwhelming beginning to this campaign.

One Final Thing

It hasn’t quite all been sunshine and rainbows since Rice football head coach Scott Abell was hired in December, but it would be hard to describe the last nine months as anything other than a honeymoon period. New gifts were exchanged in the form of an exciting offensive scheme and intriguing transfer portal additions, but no games have been played to this point. That changes on Saturday.

On Saturday, there will be a play call that doesn’t work a decision that draws a “what if” and something that goes against the Owls’ favor. Suddenly, the first bad news will arrive and all those good intentions and months of preparation will be held to the fire to be tested on the road against what appears to be a quality opponent.

It’s a long season and all of us must avoid the tendency to overreact to this one data point in a week’s time. However, there’s a good deal at stake in a contest that will put this gun option offense on display against an FBS opponent for the first time. No matter how the chips fall, this is a huge weekend for the program.
