Rice Baseball 2025: MLB Owls Update – August 5

August 5, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2025 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are making the most of their time in The Show. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers finds himself in a bit of a slump, hitless in his last six games dating back to July 29. He’s continued to make plays in center field, but this marks one of his more prolonged cold spells at the plate following a red-hot start to the season. He’s walked three times and struck out five times over that time.

Through August 5, Myers is hitting .245 with 13 extra-base hits, 18 walks and 64 strikeouts. His OPS is .623 and he’s collected 25 RBI and stolen 16 bases.

Tristan Gray – Tampa Bay Rays

Gray is currently in his second stint of the season with the Rays’ big league club. After joining the team via trade, he was sent to the minors for a span of just a few days before being recalled at the beginning of August. He has had one plate appearance since then — a strike out as a pinch hitter on Sunday against the Dodgers.

Through August 4, Gray is hitting .143 with no walks and four strikeouts in just seven plate appearances. He collected one RBI and one hit.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon has been out of the news since it was reported he would miss a significant amount of time following hip surgery this spring. There have been no updates from the Angels or his camp since then.

Matt Canterino – Twins AAA

Canterino underwent season-ending surgery this spring and was released by the Twins before subsequently signing back with the club on a minor league contract while he undergoes rehab.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls either began the season in AAA or have since been promoted to that level:

  • Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds)
  • Glenn Otto – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Astros)
  • Trei Cruz – Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers)
