Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls Update – Sep 24

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

JT Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois saw action in three games this week, working 2.2 innings with mixed results. He earned a hold in his first appearance of the week, finishing off a scoreless sixth inning to earn a hold. A few days later he was charged with a blown save against the Rangers, giving up a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Through Sep. 24, Chargois has a 2.31 ERA with a 1.029 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers made his return from the injured list this week, playing in his first game since Junly 13. He had one place appearance in the ninth inning of a 4-1 Marlins win, drawing a walk.

Through Sep. 24, Myers was hitting .265 with eight extra-base hits, eight walks and 32 strikeouts. His OPS is .765 and he’s collected 14 RBI.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon is on the injured list for the third time this season with an oblique strain. There’s only so much baseball left to be played this year so it’s possible this is the last time we’ll see Rendon on the diamond before the 2024 season, hopefully after an offseason to get healthy and return to old self.

Through Sep 24, Rendon is hitting .224 with 10 extra-base hits, 22 walks and 35 strikeouts. His OPS is .590 and he’s collected 11 RBI.

  • Tyler Duffey – Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals)
  • Jon Duplantier – Oklahoma City Dodgers (Dodgers)

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

JT Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois only saw action in one game this week, but he made it count, picking up his third win of the season. He entered Friday’s game against the Texas Rangers and tossed a scoreless eighth inning before the Mariner’s bats woke up in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs and handing Chargois the W. He’s 3-1 on the season.

Through Sep 17, Chargois has a 2.23 ERA with a 1.052 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

Tristan Gray – Oakland Athletics

Gray was optioned to Triple A this past week following eight appearances with the A’s in which he hit.143 with three walks and 13 strikeouts. His OPS with Oakland was .441.

Injured List

Myers began a rehab assignment for AAA Jacksonville this week, signaling a possible return before the end of the regular season. He’s been on the 60-Day injured list since July 13.

Before he hit the IL, Myers was hitting .265 with eight extra-base hits, seven walks and 32 strikeouts. His OPS is .759 and he’s collected 14 RBI.

JT Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois continues to be productive when handed the ball. He had three opportunities to do so this week, going 3.0 innings while allowing one hit, two walks and striking out two. His lone rune allowed came in a 16-3 thumping of the Oakland Athletics so no harm done on that front.

Through Sep 10, Chargois has a 2.30 ERA with a 1.085 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Tristan Gray – Oakland Athletics

A recent addition to the Oakland organization, Gray made his debut with the A’s on September 1 and has now appeared in eight games with the organization, seven of them at home. He’s picked up three hits and is still looking for his first RBI of the season after a short cameo in May and early June with the Miami Marlins.

Through Sep 10, Gray is hitting .107 with one extra-base hits, three walks and 16 strikeouts. His OPS is .336.

Evan Kravetz – Cincinatti Reds

Kravetz made his first cup of coffee at the major league level count, retiring both batters he faced in two-thirds of an inning on August 28, the day he was promoted. The Reds announced they were reverting Kravetz back to AAA three days later.

JT Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois made three appearances with the Mariners this week, tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless ball. He struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit, lowering his ERA with Seattle from 3.72 to 3.09. He’s kept the opponent scoreless in 10 of his 12 games there since he was acquired at the trade deadline.

Through Sep 3, Chargois has a 2.22 ERA with a 1.094 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon went 4-for-21 (.191) at the dish this week, but he made his contact count, collecting a pair of doubles with two RBI in the process. Here’s that two-RBI hit against the Mariners, which would prove to be the decision swing that put the Angels on top for good.

Through Sep 3, Rendon is hitting .224 with 10 extra-base hits, 22 walks and 35 strikeouts. His OPS is .590 and he’s collected 11 RBI.

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

JT Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois has been extremely busy since our last update. He’s appeared in five games over a stretch of 12 days, working at least one inning on four of those occasions. He only surrendered five hits across 5.1 innings pitched but was charged with four earned runs thanks to a pair of homers against him.

Through Aug 27, Chargois has a 2.39 ERA with a 1.101 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon hasn’t found his stroke at the plate just yet, but he continues to find ways to get on base. The veteran has walked six times in his last six games and contributed with a couple of RBIs in his recent two-week stretch. His on-base percentage has crept up from .308 to .317 in that time despite a bit of a lull with his bat, just four hits in the past 10 games.

Through Aug 27, Rendon is hitting .229 with eight extra-base hits, 20 walks and 33 strikeouts. His OPS is .591 and he’s collected nine RBI.
