Rice Basketball: Is this team for real? — January Patreon Q&A

January 27, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The win over North Texas was incredible, but barely beating UTSA was disappointing. Which version of Rice basketball shows up next time?

If you asked Rice basketball head coach Scott Pera if he’s come down from cloud nine, he might not yet know the answer. Even with practices to attend to and new games to play, the significance of the Owls’ recent upset win over North Texas won’t be lost on Pera. In the standings, it’s one game. But what about in the grand scheme of things? Has this program gotten over the hump? We tackle that in this month’s Patreon Q&A.

Rice Athletics: Where do women’s sports rank in ACC? — December Patreon Q&A

December 28, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Athletics has faired extremely well in women’s sports in Conference USA. Can they maintain that success in the American Conference?

There were so many good questions submitted in our last Q&A request at the tail end of the Rice football season and this one deserved its own acknowledgment. With football finished and the early signing period in the books, now was the perfect time to take a closer look at another good question that came in relating to sports beyond football in the Owls’ new home, specifically the women’s sports. We tackle that in this month’s Patreon Q&A.

Six Conference USA football programs are headed to the American Conference next year? Which of them is best positioned for success?

A little longer than one year ago, six schools jointly announced a big move. The six soon-to-be former Conference USA Football programs are heading to the American Athletic Conference in 2023. Rice Football: Where’s the respect? — September Patreon Q&A

September 28, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football is playing at its highest level yet under head coach Mike Bloomgren. What will it take for those outside of Houston to notice?

Rice football sits at 2-2 in their nonconference slate with a home game against UAB looming, this month’s mailbag focuses on respect. Specifically, when will the Owls stop being overlooked? Who else do they have to beat? We tackle those themes in this month’s Patreon Q&A.

Rice Football: What’s the path to a bowl game? — August Patreon Q&A

August 28, 2022 By Matthew Bartlett

What’s the path for Rice football to reach their first bowl game under head coach Mike Bloomgren? We explore that topic in this month’s Patreon Q&A.

I was asked one extremely important question this month that made me think. If Rice football wants to reach a bowl game this season, they’ll need to win at least six games. Some will be easier than others, of course, which fits in well with this month’s question. Which games does Rice “need” to win? What’s the most likely path to the postseason? We tackle those themes in this month’s Patreon Q&A.
