Rice Football: What’s next for the Bayou Bucket? – September 2023 Patreon Q&A

September 28, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Bayou Bucket rivalry between Rice football and Houston appears to be on hiatus. The question is, for how long?

The 2023 edition of the Bayou Bucket, won by Rice football in overtime, was the last scheduled meeting between the two teams currently on the schedule. There’s some interest to keep the game going in the future, but there is no clear path forward right now. Why? What’s standing in the way of rekindling this rivalry on an annual basis? And other games might fit on future nonconference schedules.

Rice Football: Realignment and Plan Bs – August 2023 Patreon Q&A

August 22, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

From conference affiliations to Rice football’s potential should injuries arise again, this month’s Patreon Q&A covers a lot of ground.

Rice football has had unbelievably bad luck when it comes to health at the quarterback position. The team really believes in JT Daniels, but what are the Owls’ prospects should they have to turn to Plan B at the position? And when it comes to the future of the program as a whole, what conference will the Owls be playing in come 2024 and beyond?

There were a couple of good questions this month, so we went ahead and answered all of them. Want to get your questions answered? Subscribe on Patreon for our monthly mailbag.

What if JT Daniels is good? — Rice Football July 2023 Patreon Q&A

July 18, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Quarterback JT Daniels was a big get for Rice football in terms of name recognition. How far can the Owls go if he lives up to the hype?

JT Daniels received his fair share of barbs when word broke last year that he would be transferring to play for Rice football in 2023. The journeyman passer has bounced around college football, seeing starting stints at USC, Georgia and West Virginia before winding up in Houston with head coach Mike Bloomgren and the Owls.

Nods have been given to Bloomgren and the program for landing a well-known name. But Daniels isn’t coming to South Main to kiss babies and smile for pictures. He wants to win and his track record suggests he’s got talent. If that is true and he plays up to that potential how far can the Owls soar?

Rice Soccer Recruiting Updates: May 2023 Patreon Q&A

May 31, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The recruiting cycle never stops in college sports, and that includes Rice soccer, too. The Owls are on track to add some impact players for next season.

Even though Rice soccer finished with an undefeated conference record last season, head coach Brian Lee wasn’t about to sit around on his hands and wait for the 2023 season to arrive. He and the Owls have been busy on the transfer front, the focus of this month’s Patreon Q&A.

Rice Football: Should we worry about the offense? — March ’23 Patreon Q&A

March 29, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice football offense didn’t light the world on fire in its first scrimmage of the spring. How much should we read into those struggles?

The arrival of starting quarterback JT Daniels spurred a new wave of optimism in the Rice football offense this offseason, but the first scrimmage of the spring came and went without fireworks from that side of the ball. Why was that? And what further developments should be expected as the entire unit works to improve this spring. We dig into those questions in this month’s Patreon Q&A.
