Malia Fisher’s big day propels Rice Women’s Basketball past Marshall

Rice Women’s Basketball won its first Conference USA Tournament game on Wednesday, soaring past Marshall thanks to Malia Fisher’s big day.

Earlier this season, Rice women’s basketball head coach Lindsay Edmonds had talked about the importance of winning the third quarter. That need had progressed to winning the fourth quarter as the Owls struggled to close games out at the start of conference play.

On Wednesday morning in their opening game of the Conference USA Tournament, Rice won the second quarter, and they did so with such an emphatic blow it set the tone for the remainder of the contest, one in which they would go on to score 80 points, a Rice women’s Basketball Conference USA Tournament record.

The Owls took a three-point lead out of the first quarter and opened with an 8-0 run to kick off the second period. It was the Owls’ defense though, combined with a voracious desire to attack the basket, that left the most resounding mark. Marshall would make just two field goals in the second quarter, shooting a meager 11.1 percent from the field. Conversely, Rice went to the line 12 times in the frame and knocked down all 12 shots.

Leading 38 to 25 at halftime, all Rice had to do was buckle down and hold the line. That’s exactly what they did. Marshall would get their deficit back within single digits on a few occasions early in the third quarter, but from the moment Maya Bokenewicz drained her second three-pointer of the day with 6:17 to play in the third, it was a runaway win for the Owls.

“We’re definitely playing our best basketball,” head coach Lindsay Edmonds remarked. “The proof is in our record. We’re clicking.”

Rice would extend their lead to as many as 18, maintaining at least a 14 point advantage for the duration of the fourth quarter. Marshall never got within striking distance and the Owls were able to coast down the stretch to their first win of the tournament.

Player Spotlight | Malia Fisher

With Ashlee Austin sidelined with foul trouble, Rice women’s basketball was going to need someone to help shoulder the load. Malia Fisher answered the call with one of the most spectacular outings of her young career. Days removed from being named to the All-Conference team, Malia Fisher put on a rebounding clinic in Frisco, TX.

Fisher ended the game with 16 rebounds, nearly tying her career-best 18-rebound game against FIU just a few short weeks ago. She also added 17 points.

“I wasn’t aware of [having a double-double] until I came out in the last couple minutes until I came out,” Fisher said. “You just go out there and play. I’m not really worried about the numbers. A win is a win.”

Coach Edmonds was elated to see Fisher’s success but stressed this was just the beginning of the freshmen’s abilities. “Her ceiling is extremely high. We’re tapping into that, but we’re not even close. The future is very, very bright for Malia,” Edmonds said. “She’s an unbelievable young lade. I’m glad she’s wearing that uniform.”

Stat Corner | Free throws and free points

Rice did a lot of things well against Marshall, but their dominance at the free throw line might have been the most impactful differentiator. The Owls hit 25-of-27 free throws (92.6 percent). Marshall attempted just 15, but made a woeful eight of those attempts (53.3 percent).

While the Herd handed away points at the stripe, Rice stockpiled them. It would have been enough to give Rice the win in a close game. As well as they played on Wednesday, it was enough to comfortably send them to the second round.

With the win, Rice women’s basketball advances to the third round of the Conference USA Tournament where they’ll face Charlotte, the No. 1 seed in the East. The Owls and 49ers played a 4 OT thriller in the regular season with the 49ers coming out on top in that contest.

Rice Women’s Basketball blasted past UTEP at home, locking up a first-round bye in the Conference USA Tournament win the win.

Maya Bokunewicz put up a three-pointer for the first shot of a midweek game between Rice women’s basketball and UTEP. It bounced off the mark before being recovered by Trinity Gooden who converted on the second-chance attempt to put Rice in front 2-0. In a dramatic divergence from the Owls’ last game where nothing would go in, even the missed shots turned into points on Thursday night.

The 2-0 lead quickly snowballed into a 22-7 lead which grew into a monstrous 28-point halftime advantage in favor of the Owls. That’s the sort of thing that happens when one team finds their stroke and shoots 57.6 from the field in the first two quarters.

Last Time Out: Rice Women’s Basketball rallies past Southern Miss in huge road win

Bokunewicz and Malia Fisher each had double-digit points before the halftime buzzer sounded. Destiny Jackson, Ashlee Austin and Trinity Gooden would join them in double figures before the night was through. And although they would cool down, averaging just 46.4 percent from the field for the game, their sizable lead was never in jeopardy.

The win secures Rice women’s basketball a top-five finish in the West, even if UTEP should win this coming Saturday. Rice will earn a bye in the first round of the conference tournament whereas UTEP will face seventh seed UTSA for a spot in the Day 2 games.

Player Spotlight | Malia Fisher

Fisher continues her bid for Conference USA Freshman of the Year with another dominant game, tying her career-high with 20 points on the way to another double-double. She also had three assists and two steals. Her versatility provides a spark to this team in a myriad of ways and has been crucial in their recent hot streak.

Two weeks ago following a narrow win over UAB, Rice women’s basketball head coach Lindsay Edmonds said she expected her team to be in a lot of close games. Games that — in her words — were going to “come down to the wire”. True to her prediction, Rice did play several neck-and-neck contests. Thursday’s win over UTEP was anything but close.

Rice led by as many as 31 points, essentially putting the game on ice by the midpoint of the very first quarter. It was one of the most dominant performances of the season and it came within days of the Conference USA Tournament.

Rice Women’s Basketball: Owls grind out narrow win at UTEP

Locked in a close game with UTEP from wire to wire, Rice women’s basketball made the shots when it mattered to secure the road win.

It might be worth finding someone to whisper “it’s the first quarter” into the ear of every Rice women’s basketball player before they take the court. The Owls continue to be one of the fastest-starting teams in Conference USA as their trend of early scoring continued on Saturday against UTEP.

Rice jumped out to a 9-3 lead to start the contest, pushing their advantage to seven points late in the first quarter before UTEP was able to find any sort of rhythm. The Miners would narrow the deficit in the second quarter and tie the game up before a Destiny Jackson jumper at the buzzer put Rice back in front, 32-30.

The third and fourth quarters would be more of the same. Despite Rice outshooting UTEP 49.0 percent from the field compared to UTEP’s 39.3 percent, neither team led by more than three points in the second half until Haylee Swayze hit a three with 5:51 to play. From that point onward Rice simply had to weather the storm.

Turnovers by both teams made the finish tighter than the Owls would have hoped for, but Destiny Jackson delivered five free throws in the final 90 seconds to secure the win. After starting 0-5 in conference play, Rice women’s basketball has now won two of their last three.

Player Spotlight | Malia Fisher

Extended playing time for some of the Owls’ up-and-coming players was one of the subtle blessings of a short bench this season. Malia Fisher showcased the benefits of having her on the court quickly, notching double-doubles in three of her first six career games.

On Saturday against UTEP, it seemed as Fisher couldn’t miss. She connected on her first six shots from the field, ending the game 7-for-14 with seven rebounds, fives assist and two steals. The Owls’ streaky offense was sparked time and time again by a big play from Fisher.

Stat Corner | Five deep

Rice women’s basketball has relied heavily on their staters all season long. With little reinforcements behind them, the Owls’ starting five are going to have to carry the load. That’s exactly what they did on Saturday. Rice got two points from their bench, courtesy of India Bellamy’s lone shot attempt, splitting the remaining 70 points across their five starters. UTEP would only score 69 points with their starters and bench combined.

Four of the Owls’ five starters reached double-digits with Haylee Swayze coming up just short (eight points) but delivering the crucial three-pointer in the fourth quarter that all but put the game out of reach. It was a stellar performance from the starters. Rice will need more of that going forward.

It’s been a long while since Rice women’s basketball took the court for a game of any kind. The Owls have missed three contests, beginning with a road trip to play Texas A&M on Dec. 19 and continuing through to the New Year with their conference opener against North Texas also postponed.

Before COVID-19 through a wrench in the Owls’ plans, things were starting to tick upward. The team sits at 5-3 with conference play looming. Delays aside, how does this team compare with the expectations with which they entered the season? Let’s dig in.

Rice Women’s Basketball rolls past St. Edwards in season opener

Rice women’s basketball took care of business in their home opener, opening coach Lindsay Edmond’s tenure with a convincing victory.

To some extent, early season basketball games are hard to evaluate. Rice Women’s basketball opened their 2021-2022 campaign against St. Edwards, a DII school. Even with so many new pieces to work in and early-season jitters to iron out, a win was expected. Anything beyond that would have been icing on the cake.

On Tuesday night, with a crowd in the stands at Tudor Fieldhouse for the first time in more than a year, the Owls had feasted.

After trading buckets in the early moments, Rice extended a 5-4 lead to 28-4 lead before St. Edwards could score again. Freshman Malia Fisher led the way out of the gate. Fellow newcomer Alexis Stover added nine points of her own and the entire team played solid defense, the kind Rice fans have grown accustomed to over the last several years.

“Overall, the gelling is happening. It’s going to continue to happen as we go. I don’t expect it to be perfect on the first night, but I thought we looked pretty good out there for the majority of the game,” head coach Lindsay Edmonds said afterward.

Team captain Katelyn Crosthwait played limited minutes in what is expected to be her last game of reduced minutes this season. Fellow captain Haylee Swayze was held out entirely. Edmonds said she could be a few more weeks away from seeing her first action.

It’s a long season and both are working to get back to 100 percent. That left extra court time available for Rice in the opener which coach Edmonds took advantage of, getting the majority of the roster meaningful playing time.

Given the various combinations of new faces, it wasn’t a perfect game by any means. This was the first time many of these players had seen the court in a live game and there were some growing pains. There was a sequence in which Rice committed a shot clock violation in the first quarter with plenty of time to work with.

There were smaller communication gaps on both sides of the court. But when you open up a 30-point margin, there’s room to work through those issues. Edmonds was quick to mention she was “obviously, a little worried about our third quarter effort” in which St. Edwards cut their deficit from 26 to 27 points, adding later that the team has “some work to do on the rebounding end, for sure.”

In totality, Rice women’s basketball netted just what they needed from this tune-up game. They won, gathered valuable time on the court and came away with a list of things to work on as the season progresses. And most importantly, they’re 1-0.

Player Spotlight | Malia Fisher

Freshman Malia Fisher was one of the positives from this game. Fisher scored or assisted on nine of the Owls’ first 11 points. She finished with nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. After starting the game a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, she did not attempt another shot from the floor, but found other ways to help the team win.

Edmonds’ noted the second-half lul and seemed confident Fisher’s consistency would come. She went on to call Fisher “a very special player, very athletic” adding that “she hasn’t even tapped into her full potential yet. She’s an exciting player that does a lot of things that make you go ‘wow’.” Consider that a ringing endorsement of one of the Owls’ newest faces.
