Rice Basketball Tops Oral Roberts to Close Out Coconut Hoops

November 26, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Less than 48 hours removed from heartbreaking overtime losses, Rice Basketball bounced back and posted a big win over Oral Roberts at Coconut Hoops.

A grueling week at Coconut Hoops got off to a familiar start on Wednesday with Rice Basketball taking an early lead, this time against Oral Roberts. The Owls scored first and traded baskets with the Golden Eagles for much of the first half before Trade Broadnax earned the team some separation with successive possessions with a three and a jumper that put Rice in front by ten.

Ahead by a decent margin with four minutes to play, Rice was able to keep the margin there with even play from both sides of the court, answering the two field goals Oral Roberts was able to make in the final five minutes of the half, entering intermission with a 12 point advantage.

Rice really seized control in earnest right out of the break. Jimmy Oladokun kicked off a 12-4 run that put the Owls ahead by 20. A steady barrage of threes and hard earned free throws ensured the advantage was never again distilled to single digits.

Rice Basketball held on to win, improving to 3-6 with the win. The Owls are 1-4 away from Tudor Fieldhouse this season.

What They’re Saying

“That was a good week. It was a great way to cap off what I though was a week of tremendous growth for our team. We played together. We played tough, hard-nosed defense. We didn’t close out the first two games, but I thought we did a great job finishing this game. Our defense really stepped up in the second half.” – Rice Basketball head coach Rob Lanier

Key takeaway | Bringing the Heat from Deep

Rice basketball shot better than 50 percent from the floor on Wednesday, a welcomed offensive boost from a team that hadn’t quite found its shooting stroke in earnest this season. When combined with a strong defensive effort that kept Oral Roberts in check to the tune of 38 percent from the field, Rice was in a good place. The three-pointers sealed the deal.

Rice tied a season-high with 12 three-pointers getting three each from Broadnax and Jalen Smith and four from Nick Anderson. If Rice can get near that level of production from that trio — and build on early promise from freshman Cam Carroll who scored 10 on 2-for-3 from deep — Rice has the potential to be feisty down the stretch. Good defense with some deep shots will give teams fits. The next step is finding a way to produce that level of play more consistently.

Rice Basketball Ambushed by FGCU in OT

November 25, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Basketball never trailed in regulation, but found themselves in a double-digit deficit, losing to FGCU in overtime at the Coconut Hoops Tournament.

Points were at a premium in the early goings of the second Rice basketball contest at Coconut Hoops. Jimmy Oladokun opened the scoring against Florida Gulf Coast with a layup more than two minutes into the contest as the Owls slowly began to accumulate a modest advantage.

Rice opened up a 9-2 edge, eventually growing the lead to 13 points on a big three-pointer from Jalen Smith. Florida Gulf Coast would close the half strong, though, knocking down consecutive three pointers to cut the gap to seven at intermission.

That late push would prove to be the spark Florida Gulf Coast needed from deep. Riding hot three-point shooting from Jordan Ellerbee, the local team would trim the Owls’ advantage to one point midway through the second half. Rice never trailed in regulation, but a missed jumper from Trae Broadnax at the buzzer left the door open for overtime. Florida Gulf Coast capitilized.

The Eagles, who had yet to lead at any point in the first 40 minutes, scored the first 13 points in the extra period, putting the game out of reach before the Owls were able to get their feet underneath them. For a second game in a row, the Owls were bystanders in extra time.

Rice Basketball falls to 2-6 with the loss. The Owls are 0-4 away from Tudor Fieldhouse this season.

Key takeaway | Deja Vu All Over Again

For those who might have missed this game, the script mirrored the first Rice Basketball contest at Coconut Hoops. Just like they did Tuesday against Florida Gulf Coast, Rice led Kennesaw State for the bulk of regulation but couldn’t find a way to close the door in regulation.

Trae Broadnax fouled out. Kennesaw State outscored Rice 6-1 in overtime.

One day later, Trae Broadnax fouled out against Florida Gulf Coast, who outscored Rice 19-4 in overtime.

Two very winnable games. And Rice basketball had ample opportunities to win in the first 40 minutes but couldn’t close either out. Either would have bee gut-wrenching another, but for these games to occur in succession was particularly cruel. If this team can survive this, it should all be uphill from here, because it’s hard to imagine a more painful way to lose two basketball games in a two day span.

2025-2026 Rice Basketball Season Preview

October 30, 2025 By Matthew Bartlett

Rob Lanier was tasked with laying the foundation for Rice Basketball a year ago when he arrived on South Main. What’s in store for the Owls in his second season?

Extended rebuilds are no longer a thing in the world of college athletics, but Rice basketball knew they’d be facing more than a one-year reboot when they made the decision to move on from Scott Pera a year ago and hire Rob Lanier. The roster was gutted and Lanier and his new staff scrambled in the portal to rebuild the roster in short order. The results were mixed.

This time around, the Owls did lose players to the portal, like is normative for just about every program these days except for perhaps the upper-tier blue bloods, but the continuity already established has those around South Main more optimistic about what the program might be able to accomplish in Year 2.

2024-2025 Rice Basketball Season Preview

October 23, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Basketball embarks on a new era under head coach Rob Lanier this season. What will the new-look Owls be able to offer in his debut season on South Main?

Emotions are always high when you hire a new coach. A new day dawns and all the prior struggles and frustrations are momentarily thrust back into the depths. But the games will eventually start again and the neverending cycle of hope and tragedy that plagues all sports will soon return. New Rice basketball head coach Rob Lanier is responsible for ensuring those woes are shortlived and the Owl faithful see a product on the court that makes them proud.

Lanier didn’t shy away from those obligations when he first addressed Rice fans the day he was hired. “We’re gonna win. It ain’t a hope. It ain’t a dream. It’s a reality. So you can get prepared for that,” he said at the podium that afternoon. In a short time, those words will be put to the test.

Rice Basketball Recruiting: F Jimmy Oladokun Jr. commits to Owls

May 13, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

A guard-heavy 2024 Rice basketball recruiting class has picked up a building block with some size. San Diego forward Jimmy Oladokun has committed to the Owls.

Good news continues to arrive on the Rice basketball recruiting front. Head coach Rob Lanier and his staff continue to remake the Owls’ roster from scratch, combining returning players and portal pickups to build a unit ready to hit the court this coming fall. Their newest addition should add some size and power to the roster. Former San Diego forward Jimmy Oladokun has committed to the Owls.

Oladokun hails from Los Angeles, CA and was a three-star recruit coming out of high school before the 2023-2024 season, picking San Diego over New Mexico at the time.

He spent his this past season with the Toreros, appearing in 31 games with 13 starts. He averaged 5.7 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest, playing 15.7 minutes per game. A game one starter, Oladokun went back and forth from the bench during the season,  finishing his time with the Toreros with some of his best games. He scored 20 at Loyola Marymount in February just after putting up 13 points against Saint Mary’s,

The running total of new additions to the Rice basketball roster grows to nine with Oladokun’s addition. He’s just the third guard the staff has added from the portal, though, and his 6-foot-9, 220-pound frame promises to help him become an impactful part of the Owls frontcourt.

Oladokun has the potential to be an impact post player for the Owls as he continues to mature and grow his game, but he’ll be coming to South Main with bonafide D1 experience and plenty of athleticism. This a great pickup for the Owls, who are making a bet on a promising young player with ball skills and potential.
