Rice Basketball: 2023 Post-Season State of the Program

April 22, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2022-2023 Rice basketball saw the Owls’ win total rise but was far from perfect. Where does the program stand as it enters the offseason?

A strong start in conference play was not enough to secure a first-round bye in the conference tournament, but Rice basketball still managed to win a postseason game in the conference tournament and in the CBI Tournament en route to 19 wins, a program-high under the leadership of head coach Scott Pera.

The Owls finished 19-16 (8-12) this season, a modest improvement from a 16-17 (7-11) campaign the season prior. With the final game in the books, where does the program stand as it moves forward?

The Roost Podcast | Ep 142 – Rice Football Spring Practice and Basketball Recruiting

April 21, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football spring practices are in the books, but first we need to talk some basketball recruiting. It’s been a busy week for the offseason on both fronts.

It’s time to voice our final approvals and concerns following the conclusion of Rice football spring practices, including an initial review of the first outings of JT Daniels as the Owls’ QB1. But it’s not just football in the news right now. A string of recruiting success on the hardwood put Rice basketball into the spotlight in mid-April for a very good reason.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – Apr 18

April 19, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Since beginning a stretch that included six games in seven days, Rendon has began to heat up at the plate. From April 11 to April 18 he’s hitting .333 with just one strikeout over the span of the last six games. His OPS has risen 143 points. The Angels went 3-3 over that span.

Through April 18, Rendon is hitting .290 with one extra-base hit, seven walks and three strikeouts. His OPS is .727 and he’s collected nine RBI.

Lucas Luetge – Atlanta Braves

Luetge has appeared in one game this past week, working multiple innings for the first time this season in an April 12 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Through April 18, Luetge has a 8.10 ERA with a 1.800 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois has been sidelined since April 10 with a right oblique strain. The most recent update came on Monday when the team reported he had not yet begun throwing at that time.

Through April 18, Chargois has a 0.00 ERA with a 0.000 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto did not appear on the Rangers Opening Day roster despite making 27 starts for the club last season. Instead, he began the year on the injured list, landing on the 60-day IL on March 30 with a right shoulder strain. He will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Rice Football 2023 Spring Notebook 10: Defensive Takeaways

April 19, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice Football defense once again had a productive spring. Here’s what we learned about that side of the ball.

Despite coming out of the wrong side according to the final score in the 2023 Rice Football Blue and Gray Game, the defense had a largely positive spring. They asserted their will in the prior two scrimmages and made plenty of noise along the way, but they have questions still to be answered as spring winds down. Here are 10 closing thoughts on the defense from the totality of the spring.

Rice Football 2023 Spring Notebook 9: Offensive Takeaways

April 18, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice Football offense started slow in the spring but finished strong. Here’s what we learned about that side of the ball.

The offense “won” the 2023 Rice Football Blue and Gray Game, for those that put credence in spring game scoring systems. But regardless of what the scoreboard said, that side of the ball did exhibit plenty of growth from practice 1 to practice 15. Some questions were answered. Others weren’t. Here are 10 closing thoughts on the offense from the totality of the spring.
