Rice Baseball 2023 Season Review: Starting pitching

June 12, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The Rice baseball starting rotation was an incomplete product in 2023, salvaged at times by the dominance of Parker Smith.

Two Rice baseball pitchers made at least seven starts in 2023: Parker Smith and JD McCracken. Seven starts would account for, roughly, half of the regular season. Honestly, nobody else even got close. The recap of the bullpen results will be much more involved than this one.

For the purposes of this discussion, pitchers who made a start in at least 40 percent of their outings were included. Here’s a rundown of how the starters faired this season.

2023 Rice Baseball Transfer Portal Updates and Analysis

June 12, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Several Rice Baseball players have entered the Transfer Portal since the end of the season. Who are they? What will their losses mean for the Owls?

The College World Series has yet to be played, but that hasn’t stopped players around the country from making decisions about their futures. Rice Baseball has had some attrition in the Transfer Portal of its own. Here’s the latest on that front with some analysis on which potential moves would impact the Owls the most.

It’s worth noting players could still choose to make the decision to withdraw from the portal and return to school, assuming that’s something the coaching staff was amenable to. There’s at least one prominent transfer the staff would assuredly welcome back if they were given the opportunity.

A quick programming note. We’ll have postseason updates on the entire roster coming over the next few days. From the starting rotation to the back end of the lineup, we’ll dig into how each player contributed to the team this season and how they’ll fit into the mix moving forward.

First Look: Rice Football, AAC Over/Under Odds

June 10, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Earlier this week Circa Sports posted early over/under odds for every FBS team. Here’s where Rice football and other AAC teams stack up.

AAC Teams

  • Charlotte – 3
  • Tulsa – 4.5
  • UAB – 4.5
  • USF – 4.5
  • Rice – 4.5
  • Temple – 5
  • East Carolina – 5.5
  • Navy – 6
  • North Texas – 6
  • FAU – 7.5
  • SMU – 8
  • UTSA – 8
  • Memphis – 8.5
  • Tulane – 9

Rice football nonconference opponents

  • Texas Southern – n/a
  • UConn – 4.5
  • Houston – 4.5
  • Texas – 9.5

Takeaways

On the AAC front, Tulane being projected as the front-runner in the league isn’t too much of a surprise, especially with the return of quarterback Michael Pratt, several other key players and some added reinforcements from the transfer portal.

What might be most compelling to watch is the race alongside them. Four additional schools (FAU, SMU, UTSA and Memphis) are within a game and a half of first. That means if the conference race seems fairly wide open to you, oddsmakers are feeling the same way and looking to hedge their bets.

Likewise, there’s a game and a half gap between the next teams (North Texas and Navy) and everyone else in the conference, save Charlotte. Vegas doesn’t have much faith in the 49ers and their new head coach, but it doesn’t seem confident in anyone else to be a surefire bowl team either. That’s the recipe for a chaotic and exciting season.

As for Rice football, the Owls are pegged to finish in the middle to bottom of the new-look AAC. After finishing around the four to five-win mark in recent years and the step up in some of the competition they’ll face, that doesn’t feel too surprising.

What is most intriguing, though, is the quality of the Owls’ opponents. Rice plays Charlotte, Tulsa, UAB, USF, ECU, UConn and Houston in 2023. Add in Texas Southern and that’s eight of 12 opponents projected to be either from the FCS ranks or projected to be at or below .500. There are hard games coming (UTSA, SMU, Tulane, Texas) but Rice won’t absolutely require a miraculous upset to reach bowl eligibility.

Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls update – June 7

June 7, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Placed on the 10-day injured list in mid-May, Rendon made his highly anticipated return to the Angels’ lineup on Tuesday. He went 0-for-2 with a walk, lining out deep to right field in his first appearance and popping out in foul territory in his second. He was replaced in the sixth inning.

Through June 7, Rendon is hitting .295 with five extra-base hits, 20 walks and 15 strikeouts. His OPS is .775 and he’s collected 20 RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

Chargois has made two appearances in June, both in Marlins’ victories. He pitched one scoreless inning against the Athletics on Friday and allowed one run on one hit on Monday. He struck out three of the eight batters he faced across both outings, raising his strike outs per nine innings more than a full point.

Through June 7, Chargois has a 3.00 ERA with a 1.083 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Designated For Assignment

Lucas Luetge – Atlanta Braves

Luetge was outrighted by the Braves this week, accepting an assignment with the AAA team rather than electing free agency, doing so would have meant forfeiting the remainder of this year’s salary. He will remain with the team but not count against the Braves’ 40-man roster.

Through June 7, Luetge has a 10.24 ERA with a 2.172 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

Glenn Otto – Texas Rangers

Otto did not appear on the Rangers Opening Day roster despite making 27 starts for the club last season. Instead, he began the year on the injured list, landing on the 60-day IL on March 30 with a right shoulder strain. As the calendar turns to June, Otto could be in line to begin rehab work and chart a course back to the big league team.
