Rice Women’s Basketball 2020: Owls dispatch MTSU for 30th straight C-USA win

February 9, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

In a rematch of last season’s Conference USA Championship Game, Rice women’s basketball beat Middle Tennessee with relative ease.

For the 30th time in as many tries, Rice women’s basketball won a conference game. The Owls’ most recent victory, a 77-60 win over Middle Tennessee at Tudor Fieldhouse on Saturday served as the most recent reminder of this team’s dominance.

Rice had dispatched of every C-USA opponent they’d faced this season, but they had yet to play either Old Dominion or Middle Tennessee, the two programs still in striking distance of the Owls’ in the conference standings. Facing their toughest test of the season, Rice verified their supremacy with their trademark level of suffocating defensive intensity.

Middle Tennessee made two of their first 15 shots and nine of their first 32. The Lady Raiders entered with a 40% shooting percentage on the season. Rice held them to 33.8% shooting while knocking down 47.3% of their own shots.

Winning conference games is hard. Rice women’s basketball has made it seem easy. And beating one of the conference’s better teams by nearly 20 points only underscores the expectations the Owls are putting on themselves. Perfection isn’t the goal — the NCAA Tournament is — but the more Rice wins the closer they get to achieving that greater aspiration.

Player of the Game – Erica Ogwumike

The impressiveness of Rice women’s basketball leading scorer Erica Ogwumike continues to be understated. On Saturday she tallied a double-double at halftime. That would have been her 10th consecutive double-double had she not been subbed out with nine rebounds when Rice had a commanding lead over UAB their last time out.

Ogwumike finished with ## points and ## rebounds. Her presence on the court gives Rice a chance to win every possession, something few teams in college basketball can say of any one individual.

Up Next

Rice women’s basketball will hit the road for their next two contests. On Thursday, Feb. 13 they’ll face Old Dominion in arguably their most important C-USA game of the season to this point. That game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday they’ll head to Charlotte for a 3:00 p.m. game. Both are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.

Rice keys to victory

Beyond an incredible stretch of shooting, the Owls’ recent two-game winning streak has featured a pair of hot starts that have put a renewed sense of confidence in a team coming off a tough stretch. Rice tends to be a streaky shooting team. If the Owls can keep the game close early until they find their stroke, they might have found a recipe for success that could work.

Rice keys to victory

This will be a rematch of last year’s conference championship game. The Owls’ won that game, but it wasn’t easy. Middle Tennesse led by eight points at halftime before Rice turned on the jets in the third quarter and eventually punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

The third quarter has been where Rice has made its move. Tina Langley’s squad makes adjustments, executes and outlasts. Saturday’s contest should be no different. If Rice can win the third quarter, they’ll have enough firepower to prevail at home.

Rice keys to victory

In their most recent outing, Rice proved they can beat anyone when they shoot the lights out. Barring another historic performance from the field, Rice will have to get better on the other side of the court. North Texas shot 51 percent from the field and 48.5 percent from three. Most nights, that’ll be good enough to win in Conference USA. Rice has to get that percentage down into the 40s, at least.

  • Assists | Angela Vendrell – 4.7 per game
  • Steals | Angela Vendrell – 1.1 per game
  • Blocks | Angela Vendrell – 1.0 per game

Rice keys to victory

UAB is going to trust Rachael Childress and Angela Vendrell to run the show. The matchup between those two and the Owls’ tandem of Erica Ogwumike and Nancy Mulkey will be pivotal in determining the outcome of this gam . So far, they’ve been up to the task.

  • Assists | Javion Hamlet – 4.7 per game
  • Steals | Umoja Gibson – 1.3 per game
  • Blocks | Deng Geu – 0.9 per game

Rice keys to victory

The Owls got run out of the gym in their previous meeting with the Mean Green, falling by 20 points on the road. The driver for the disparate score was the defensive prowess exhibited by North Texas and the lack thereof from Rice. North Texas shot 54 percent from the field, a notch above their season average of 47.7 percent.

North Texas hasn’t given up gives up the fewest rebounds in the league, but Rice won the battle of the boards last time out. Rice needs to do that again as well as keep the North Texas shooters from putting the game out of reach early.

North Texas 9-11 (3-5), Last 5 (2-3)

North Texas statistical leaders

  • Scoring | Anisha George – 12.9 per game
  • Rebounds | Anisha George – 8.9 per game
  • Assists | N’Yah Boyd – 2.7 per game
  • Steals | Destinee McDowell – 2.6 per game
  • Blocks | Anisha George – 1.5 per game

Rice keys to victory

North Texas has a stingy defense. They’re one of three programs in Conference USA that have held their opponents to less than 60 points a game, on average. Unfortunately for the Mean Green, so are the Owls. In what should be a defensive slugfest, it’s going to come down to who can stay patient enough on offense and take the best shots. That’s an area that overwhelming favors the Owls.

Conference USA Women’s Basketball 2020: Mid-conference play update

January 30, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

The Conference USA women’s basketball season is creeping closer and closer to March. Here’s where things stand with roughly half the conference games in the books.

The driving story of Conference USA women’s basketball remains the incredible undefeated run from the Rice Owls. Through eight games of the current season, Rice has won an astounding 27 consecutive games against C-USA foes. The Owls are as good as advertised, and they’ve done it while missing games from two of their most prominent stars: Erica Ogwumike and Nancy Mulkey.

UTEP has been a pleasant surprise, after being picked to finish near the cellar the Miners are two games out of first place. With Old Dominion, Middle Tennessee and UAB have emerged as a tier above the rest, but matchups between the remaining teams (save for 1-7 FIU) feel like a toss up on any given night.

The Standings

Roughly at the midpoint of C-USA play, here's are the women's basketball standings. pic.twitter.com/tkVOTHq8y4

— The Roost (@AtTheRoost) January 28, 2020

Early Player of the Year pick

It’s hard to pick against Preseason Conference USA Player of the Year Erica Ogwumike. The Owls’ do-it-all guard has scored 51 points in the past two games after missing the two prior contests with an injury. She’s had double-digit rebounds in six straight contests and continues to wow every time she takes the court. As long as she’s healthy, it’s going to be hard to beat this team.

Panic buttons

For the most part, the women’s standings reflect preseason expectations. The teams that were supposed to be good have proven to be good and vice-versa. The only possible exception could be Middle Tennessee. The Lady Raiders were the only other non-Rice team to receive first-place votes. Since the preseason, though, they’ve fallen three games behind the Owls in the standings. There would be no shame in finishing runner up to the Owls, but it would mean to NCAA bid and a disappointing season for MTSU.

February game to watch

Circle February 8 on your calendars for the matchup which could decide who wins Conference USA. Middle Tennessee visits Rice for a 2:00 p.m. tip. The Owls could be playing for their 30th consecutive C-USA win at that point. A stumble against a quality opponent could open the door for someone else to win the conference crown down the stretch.

Bracketology

Conference USA women’s basketball is projected to remain a one-bid league in the latest Bracketology. Charlie Breme has current frontrunner Rice as a 12-seed in the Portland region, squaring off against Kentucky in the first round. Whether it’s Rice or someone else, the odds off C-USA being anything more than a single-bid, double-digit seed seems decidedly unlikely.
