Offense

Calvin Anderson – OL, Steelers

Anderson was signed to the Steelers’ 53-man roster last week and dressed for their Week 5 game against the Cowboys but did not see action.

Luke McCaffrey – WR, Commanders

McCaffrey caught three passes for 19 yards against the Browns in Week 5, tying a career-high of three catches in a game which he’d done on two other occasions to this point. He’s caught all 10 passes thrown his way in his NFL career so far.

Nick Leverett – OL, Patriots

Leverett made his first start of the season for the Patriots, playing every snap on offense. This comes a week after filling in midgame for an injury.

Kylen Granson – TE, Colts

Granson wasn’t targeted in the passing game against the Jaguars but did contribute on special teams, making a tackle on punt duty.

Defense

Myles Adams – DL, Seahawks

Adams played on defense and special teams in the Seahawks’ Week 5 games against the Giants but did not record any statistics.

Special Teams

Jack Fox – P, Lions

The Lions were on bye in Week 5.

Chris Boswell – K, Steelers

Boswell connected on a 41-yard field goal and both of his extra point attempts in a rain-delayed Sunday Night Football contest against the Dallas Cowboys. The Boz has now made 12-of-13 field goals so far this season.

Notable Results and Storylines // (Standings)

5-0 Troops

For the first time since 1945, both Army and Navy have started the season 5-0. Army owns the nation’s longest winning streak (nine games) and has not trailed at any point during a game this season. Meanwhile Navy is cruising, too. The Midshipmen are the only team in the nation to score on every red zone appearance, converting 19-of-19 trips for scores this year. It’s a good time to be a service academy in the AAC.

Blazers down bad

UAB is not having a good time right now. Weeks removed from putting a scare into Arkansas the Blazers appear to have fallen apart, most recently being completely dismantled by Tulane. The Green Wave appear to be among the best of the best in the AAC, a stark difference from the product the Blazers are putting on the field right now. That’s not where Trent Dilfer and his staff hoped the program would be in year two, but that’s the reality they’re living in.

Niners off the mat

A similar sob story was close to being written about Charlotte, but the 49ers have rebounded from a perilous 1-3 start with back-to-back conference wins, this week blasting East Carolina in a burgeoning rivalry game. As things currently stand, the Nines are one of five AAC teams without a conference lost. That’s not someone anyone could have predicted a month ago, but things change quickly in this sport.

Looking ahead – Key storylines

In the thick of double bye weeks

It’s been back-to-back relatively light weeks for the AAC with almost half the league on bye this week and the other half on bye next week. If that feels like a lot of missing football, you’re not wrong. Because of the way the calendar falls this season each team will have two open weeks, split roughly in the first half and second half of the season. We’ll have much fuller AAC slates in Weeks 8 and Week 9 before another lull inaction later in the year.

Memphis and South Florida square off

Entering the year this Week 7 matchup between Memphis and South Florida was meant to be pivotal for the AAC Championship race, and that still very well might be true, but it’s taken on an additional degree of importance in recent weeks. Early stumbles by both squads and the hot starts of Army and Navy have upped the ante in this contest. The winner stays in the race while the loser might be out of luck before the calendar reaches Halloween.

What about the Mean Green?

North Texas has a Power conference loss to Texas Tech, but has otherwise handled business entering their first bye week of the season. The Mean Green weren’t expected to be among the conference frontrunners, but their offense looks like the real deal and they’re flying a bit under the radar following wins over Wyoming and Tulsa. A win over FAU this weekend would set them up for a potentially pivotal trip to Memphis in two weeks.

Rice Football 2024: Bye Week 1 Practice Report

Rice football is off this week, utilizing a much-needed bye week to take stock of the program and make some tweaks before the second half of their season begins.

The first free weekend of a two-bye season has arrived. Rice football was on the practice field again this week working to turn things around. A lot of depth players saw extended run and the coaching staff implemented a few adjustments to set the team up for what they hope will be a bounce back after the bye.

Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls End of Season Update

The 2024 MLB season is done and Rice baseball played their parts across the league. Here’s how the season went for each of the MLB Owls.

JT Chargois – Miami Marlins / Seattle Mariners

Chargois was part of a trade deadline deal between the Marlins and the Mariners, sending the former Seattle hurler back to a club he played parts of the 2021 season with before moving on to the Tampa Bay Rays. Chargois was solid in 21 appearances with the Mariners but had his best stretch of the season with the Marlins before he was moved leaving town with a 1.62 ERA in 15 appearances and allowing just three earned runs in 16. 2 innings.

Chargois finished the season with a 2.23 ERA with a 1.018 WHIP. He averaged 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon battled through several stints on and off the injured list, playing in 57 games this season before his year end for good in early September. The limited health made getting in a rhythm challenging for the 12-year veteran who hasn’t truly gotten into his groove since joining the Angels following an incredible 2019 season.

Rendon finished the season hitting .218 with 10 extra-base hits, 23 walks and 35 strikeouts. His OPS was .574 and he collected 14 RBI.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers played his way into being a regular with the Miami Marlins, making 40 appearances with the club while posting a solid .265 batting average and a .759 OPS before injury derailed his season. Myers would see his season put on pause following a July 13 game against the Reds, landing on the injured list for the better part of two months. He returned at the end of the season, finishing out the year with the club with a few appearances in September.

Myers finished the season hitting .263 with 10 extra-base hits, eight walks and 36 strikeouts. His OPS was .775 and he collected 19 RBI.

Tristan Gray – Miami Marlins / Oakland Athletics

Gray began the season with the Marlins, appearing in seven games before he was designated for assignment. The A’s grabbed him off waivers and quickly put him into their major league lineup. Gray didn’t register a hit in seven at bats with the Marlins and faired slightly better on the West Coast. He tallied three hits across eight appearances (six starts) before returning to the AAA team.

Gray finished the season hitting .107 with one extra-base hit, three walks and 16 strikeouts. His OPS was .336.

Tyler Duffey – Kansas City Royals

After spending the vast majority of his professional career to this point with the Twins, Duffey signed with the Royals this offseason after a brief stint with the Cubs in 2023. He made nine appearances for the Royals this season, spanning four week’s worth of action in late April through the middle of May. He earned a win and a hold in that time, but walk troubles kept him from becoming a mainstay in the pen. He was sent down following a May 20 game against the Tigers and remained in AAA for the remainder of the season.

Duffey finished the season with a 3.94 ERA with a 1.667 WHIP. He averaged 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Evan Kravetz – Cincinnati Reds

Kravetz made his big league debut on August 28, retiring the only two batters he faced in a brief seventh inning appearance against the Athletics. He induced a pair of grounds before heading back to the bench. That outing would be his only one with the big league club this season. Shortly after, Kravetz was optioned back to AAA.

Kravetz finished the season with a 0.00 ERA with a 0.00 WHIP.

Calvin Anderson – OL, Steelers

Luke McCaffrey – WR, Commanders

McCaffrey caught his lone target in Week 4, a Commanders win over the Cardinals. He now has caught all seven of his targets over four games as an NFL wideout.

Nick Leverett – OL, Patriots

Leverett played the majority of the Patriots’ offensive snaps in Week 4, taking over for an injured David Andrews who left the game in the first quarter, recovering a fumble as well as covering his typical special teams work.

Kylen Granson – TE, Colts

Granson wasn’t targeted in the Colts’ Week 4 win over the Steelers, the first time he’s gone without a target in a game this season. He did play 14 special teams snaps, which was a season high.

Defense

Myles Adams – DL, Seahawks

Adams saw his most extensive usage of the season on Monday Night Football, registering two tackles against the Lions, including one solo stop. He played a season high 38 percent of the Seahawks’ defensive snaps..

Special Teams

Jack Fox – P, Lions

There wasn’t much punting on Monday Night Football but Fox made his boots count. He kicked three times for 140 yards including a long of 50. He averaged 46.7 yards per punt.

Chris Boswell – K, Steelers

Boswell trotted out for one field goal this week from 50 yards out and struck it through the posts. He also added three extra points. The Boz has now made 11-of-12 field goals so far this season.
