Rice Baseball 2023: MLB Owls Update – Sep 19

September 20, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2023 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

Tristan Gray – Tampa Bay Rays

Gray made his MLB debut on Saturday, September 16 and picked up his first pro hits and runs on Sunday, including this towering blast to deep center field to give the Rays the lead.

— Tampa Bay Rays (@RaysBaseball) September 17, 2023

Through September 19, Gray is hitting .400 with one extra-base hit, no walks and no strikeouts. His OPS is 1.400 and he’s collected one RBI.

J.T. Chargois – Miami Marlins

It was an incredibly busy week for Chargois, who saw action in four games over the span of six days. He worked a total of 3.1 innings across those contests, allowing just one run while striking out a pair. It was one of his most heavily utilized weeks of the season thus far.

Through September 19, Chargois has a 3.49 ERA with a 1.211 WHIP. He’s averaging 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers was optioned back to AAA on Sunday after a couple of weeks with the big league team. He appeared in two games this week, once in center field with the second appearance coming as a pinch runner.

Through September 19, Myers is hitting .269 with four extra-base hits, two walks and 19 strikeouts. His OPS is .644 and he’s collected nine RBI.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon’s stint on the 60-day injured list is eligible to be ended at any time with the calendar moving past the September 9 earliest return date. There have been little updates on Rendon’s status to this point.

Through September 19, Rendon is hitting .236 with eight extra-base hits, 25 walks and 27 strikeouts. His OPS is .678 and he’s collected 22 RBI.

Rice Football 2023: South Florida presser quotes and depth chart

September 19, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice football visits South Florida this week. Here’s what Mike Bloomgren had to say about the matchup at hand and a few depth chart notes.

Head coach Mike Bloomgren and a set of players met with the media for their customary weekly availability. They recapped last week’s game and looked ahead at their upcoming matchup with USF.

Listen Now: The Roost Pod – Breaking down Rice Football vs Texas Southern

We touch on those items, then dig into the Rice football depth chart and what the team looks like heading into the weekend. First, the quotes:

Press Conference Quotes

“It makes our job as coaches, easy. When you can see the quality of the opponent on the film you watch all week, you know we got to be locked into the details if we want this dub… They played like a very confident group against Alabama on Saturday. I thought their defense did exceptional and their offense had many opportunities. They were not ever struggling to move the ball.” – Mike Bloomgren on what Rice learned from watching USF play Alabama

“I just think like that tempo is going to be a deciding factor in how successful we are. If we’re ready for the fight, I’ll bet on our defense. If we’re ready for the fight every play I just believe so strongly in the way these guys are performing the effort and they’re playing with.” – Mike Bloomgren on preparing for USF’s tempo on offense

“I think they do a lot of movement, a lot of good things for them that fit their scheme, but I believe it’s on us up front. If we handle our business and give JT [Daniels] the time he needs, there’s nothing that can stop our offense, to be honest.” – Offensive lineman Lavel Dumont on preparing for USF’s defense

“The last time I was at the Buccaneers Stadium was 2006 with Sean… Being behind the bench, him scoring and handing me the ball, it’s probably going to bring back a lot of memories but our main focus is to win, go 1-0 with the team and head back to Houston.” – Safety Gabe Taylor on returning to Raymond James Stadium and remembering his brother, Sean Taylor

Depth Chart Notes

The depth chart continues to be uneventful each week, and that’s probably a good thing. Bloomgren did not during the press conference this week that he was hopeful offensive lineman Clay Servin and backup quarterback AJ Padgett would be available this weekend, but couldn’t say for certain if they would be at this time. He noted the team did not expect Chibby Nwajuaku to be available.

The Roost Podcast | Ep 160 – Rice Football blasts TSU

September 19, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

Rice Football wasted no time in a thorough drubbing of Texas Southern, moving to 2-1 and securing the “Clutch City Sweep” over all Houston programs.

Texas Southern barely stood a chance on Saturday in their matchup with Rice football, which dominated their visiting intra-city foes from the very first snap. It was a cathartic and to some degree, unexciting game, a welcome occurrence for Owls fans hoping to see an uneventful victory. Let’s recap the game.

American Conference Football 2023: Week 3 Roundup

September 16, 2023 By Matthew Bartlett

American Conference Football was back in action this weekend. Here’s the latest from the teams on the gridiron in Week 3.

North Texas 1-2 at LA Tech W, 40-37  —

UAB 1-2 vs Louisiana L, 41-21 at Georgia
USF 1-2 vs Alabama L, 17-3 vs Rice
UTSA 1-2 vs Army L, 37-29 at Tennessee

Notable Results (Standings)

3-0 in a thriller

Memphis is the lone unbeaten in the AAC through three weeks, but it very nearly wasn’t the case. The Tigers were pushed to the wire by a frisky Navy squad that was turned away one yard short of a first down in the redzone in the closing seconds. The Tigers were one of the few AAC teams to avoid any Power 5 opponents in the early going. That changes next week with a potentially tough trip to Missouri.

Yet to score (a win)

Only one winless team remains in the AAC through three weeks: East Carolina. The Pirates weren’t particularly competitive against either Sun Belt opponent they faced in Week 2 (Marshall) or Week 3. A date with Gardner-Webb next weekend should get that zero off the win column. If not, it might be time to be more concerned.

Biff-tastrophy

Charlotte head coach Biff Poggi did not mince words in his postgame comments, making promises (threats?) to make changes to his staff and much more. The fiery first year head coach has never been afraid to speak his mind and things are certainly not off to the right foot for the 49ers who fell on Saturday to Georgia State.

Biff Poggi:

"This all falls squarely on me. I'm the head coach. I'm the guy that hired these guys. I'm the guys that set the vision. I'm the guy that brought the players in. I’m going to change my approach going forward. They’re going to be on a much tighter leash."

Looking ahead – Key storylines

Here comes conference play

The second AAC conference game takes place this coming weekend, with Navy and Memphis the only conference game so far and it should be an interesting one. 2-1 Rice travels to 1-2 USF which just put a heavy scare into the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tampa. The winner joins Memphis atop the standings, which would be a huge boost to either program.

Power 5 hunting

Rice owns the only AAC win over a Power 5 team so far this season, but several other programs will have the opportunity to join the Owls this coming weekend, unfortunately, several might have to do so without their star quarterbacks. Frank Harris (UTSA) and Casey Thompson (FAU) are both in doubt for Week 4.

Taking stock of Tulsa

The Golden Hurricane have a blowout win over an FCS school and two Power 5 losses. Seeing them in action in Week 4 against Northern Illinois, another Group of 5 team, (if we’re even still using that moniker anymore) should be a much better litmus test when it comes to evaluating just how good this team might be under head coach Kevin Wilson.
