Rice Baseball 2024: MLB Owls Update – Trade Deadline

July 31, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

The 2024 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls.

JT Chargois – Seattle Mariners

The well-traveled Chargois is on the move one more after being traded at the deadline to the Seattle Mariners, a team he previously spend part of the 2021 season with before being traded at the deadline that year to the Tampa Bay Rays. Chargois had a 3.00 ERA In 31 appearances for the Mariners that season.

Through July 30, Chargois has a 1.62  ERA with a 1.32 WHIP. He’s averaging 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Injured List

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon can’t catch a break. The veteran third baseman was placed on the 10-day Injured List on Tuesday (retroactive to July 27) due to lower back inflation. He missed this past weekend’s games on Saturday and Sunday, participating in two weeks worth of contests in total since he returned from the injured list earlier in the month.

Through July 30, Rendon is hitting .227 with six extra-base hits, 11 walks and 26 strikeouts. His OPS is .562 and he’s collected six RBI.

Dane Myers – Miami Marlins

Myers’ strong season will be delayed several weeks. The Marlins’ outfielder fractured his left ankle during a game against the Reds prior to the All-Star Break. The injury occurred while kicking a clubhouse door. He later issued a statement on social media.

Through July 30, Myers is hitting .265 with eight extra-base hits, seven walks and 32 strikeouts. His OPS is .759 and he’s collected 14 RBI.

Knocking on the Door

The following Owls began the season in AAA:

  • Matt Canterino – St Paul Saints (Twins)
  • Tyler Duffey – Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals)
  • Jon Duplantier – Syracuse Mets (Mets) *released
  • Tristan Gray – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins)
  • Evan Kravetz – Louisville Bats (Reds)
  • Lucas Luetge – Worcester Red Sox (Red Sox)
  • Dane Myers – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) *promoted
  • Glenn Otto – El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres)

Rice Football reports for fall camp this week. With the season approaching in earnest, this month’s Q&A focuses on what we’re watching for in camp.

After what felt like forever, Rice football is back on the grass this week. There are a lot of returning pieces, but not every section of the two deep is written in stone, far from it. Q: Is it too early to talk about fall camp? Obviously wide receiver is up in the air without Luke [McCaffrey], but what other positions are you most interested in?

2024 Rice Football Season Preview: Tight End

July 27, 2024 By Matthew Bartlett

Next up in our 2024 Rice Football Season Preview: tight end. Here’s our breakdown of the Owls’ plans for the group this season.

Perhaps the deepest room on the Rice football roster, the second and third levels of the wide receiver depth chart represent a fierce battle for playing time that will be worth following throughout fall camp and into the regular season. Replacing Luke McCaffrey is just part of the intrigue at this position which boasts a couple of experienced returns a pair of transfers and a host of players vying for more time on the field this coming season.
