A grand slam from Garet Boehm in the rubber game propelled Rice baseball to its first series win of conference play over Florida Atlantic.
FRIDAY | Florida Atlantic 6, Rice 2
Things got off to an encouraging start for Rice baseball on Friday night. After a pair of scoreless innings from starter Tanner Wiggins, the bats delivered a two-run lead with RBI from Landis Davila and Cole Green in the bottom of the second inning. The hosting Owls wouldn’t be able to keep the visitors at bay for that much longer, though.
Last Time Out: Big Inning Pushes Rice Baseball Past HCU
Florida Atlantic scored one in the third before taking the lead in the fourth. All three runs came on fielder’s choice plays in the infield, a theme which continued later in the game when they added two more to their totals on an infield single and a bunt in the eighth. Rice wouldn’t score again after their initial burst, dropping the opener 6-2.
SATURDAY | Rice 5, Florida Atlantic 2
Bumped up a spot from Sunday to Saturday, Ethan Sanders had to battle for every out in his five-inning outing, striking out just one batter, but limiting the damage to two runs, one apiece scored by Florida Atlantic in the second and third innings, respectively.
The Rice bats weren’t nearly as pesky for a good portion of this game. That is, until they finally broke through in the sixth. With two men on and two outs, Garet Boehm gave Rice the lead with a three-run shot to left field. Two innings later, Landis Davila singled through the right side to plate a pair of insurance runs. They wouldn’t need either as Ty Thames secured the win, closing things out with four shutout innings in relief.
SUNDAY | Rice 8, Florida Atlantic 1
Minutes after Ryland Urbanczyk breezed through an uneventful top of the first inning, Boehm put Rice baseball in striking distance of a series win. The Owls’ first baseman came to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning and left with a soaring grand slam, putting the home team in front 4-0 in the first.

Rice got solo shots from Cole Green and Colin Robson, one apiece in the next two frames, before adding a couple more insurance runs in the sixth innings to offset a solo shot from Florida Atlantic at the top of that period. Up 6-1, the bullpen took over, as Anthony Diaz and Ethan Atchley secured three scoreless innings to close things out.
