Rice Football head coach Scott Abell has named Chase Jenkins the Owls’ starting quarterback, sources familiar with the situation confirm to The Roost.
Following a three-man competition in the spring, which was whittled down further in fall camp, Chase Jenkins has been named the Rice football starting quarterback, sources confirmed to The Roost on Monday. His athleticism and quick assimilation into the Owls’ gun-choice, spread-option scheme are expected to give the program a boost as it installs a new offensive system.
Jenkins, who originally signed with the Owls as a three-star quarterback recruit out of Alief Taylor High School in Houston, made five appearances at the quarterback position in his true freshman season in 2023, including playing in the Owls’ bowl game. This will be his first career start.
He saw his most extensive action in relief of injured starter JT Daniels in the second half against SMU, completing 10-of-16 passes for 85 yards through the air. He also made an impact with his legs, rushing 14 times that season for 85 yards and a touchdown.

The following season, Jenkins made the transition to wide receiver before reverting to the quarterback room when the Owls hired Abell and shifted their offense away from a pro-style scheme toward the option, which better suited Jenkins’ skillset. He was an early leader in the competition in the spring before cementing his claim to this position this fall.
Rice Football opens it season at Louisiana on August 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
