Rice Baseball: 2020 Summer Ball mid-August Update

August 18, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

Current, former and incoming Rice baseball players are participating in Summer Ball leagues around the country. Here’s the latest on those Owls.

Summer seasons are winding down. Once everything is set in stone we’ll put together a quick wrap up piece with some notes from the summer as a whole. From what I can tell, the only league still in action with Rice baseball players that are posting stats is the Premier League in Texas. The final games in that league are set for next weekend.

Hitters

The updated stats from the Premier league we did get included further impressive numbers from the incoming Owls. It was a huge week for Nathan Becker, who kept his summer average above .400. Becker went 4-for-10 in three games, striking out once and hitting a double.

Also in action were Cullen Hannigan, Dominic Cox, Eric Benitez and Guy Garibay. All four of those saw their averages dip this week. Garibay is still slugging a comfortable .614.

Hitting Stats

Pitchers

Ben Content through his 20th scoreless inning of the summer this week. He did not allow a hit in three frames this week, striking out three and walking one. He hasn’t announced his future destination after entering the transfer portal prior to the summer.

Meanwhile, Brandon Deskins faced two batters this week, and struck out both. AC Plum got roughed up a bit in the final appearance of his summer season, taking his only loss in nine appearances.

Pitching Stats

We’ll be back next week with some end of summer thoughts on the Owls as a whole. Many have wrapped up their seasons. Only a handful of stat lines are expected to change.

*All stats as of Aug 15 taken from league and team websites. Not all participating players have complete stats and some have no official stats listed at all.

Rice Baseball: 2020 Summer Ball August 5 Update

August 5, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

Current, former and incoming Rice baseball players are participating in Summer Ball leagues around the country. Here’s the latest on those Owls.

First a quick note on rosters. I’ve tracked down all players that I could find with listed statistics, but I know there are others playing ball this summer. If you come across information on anyone else associated with Rice baseball playing summer ball, please send it my way. You can leave it in the comments or send it to me some other way. Thanks!

Hitters

It seems like most of the summer leagues are starting to wind down as the calendar meanders into August. Playoff brackets have been announced and started with Owls mixed in the various championship hunts.

There wasn’t much in the form of updated stats from the plate. Cullen Hannigan saw action in four more games, failing to register a hit but walking six times in 17 plate appearances. His OBP is up to .394 for the summer.

Hitting Stats

Pitchers

Rice baseball will have some decisions to make in the weekend rotation this coming season. Mitch Holcomb has done all he can this summer to warrant inclusion in those conversations. He’s been strong through five outings, going six scoreless innings his last time out for the Round Rock Hairy Men.

Rice needs arms that can pitch deep into games. Holcomb, a grad transfer from Penn and a Texas native, should be one of those guys the Owls can rely on in some fashion next spring.

Rice Baseball: 2020 Summer Ball July 27 Update

July 28, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

Current, former and incoming Rice baseball players are participating in Summer Ball leagues around the country. Here’s the latest on those Owls.

First a quick note on rosters. I’ve tracked down all players that I could find with listed statistics, but I know there are others playing ball this summer. Hitters

Guy Garibay’s tremendous summer marches on at a breakneck pace. The Premier League stats aren’t completely up to date yet, but the Rice baseball signee will likely push his summer average up above .400 after an RBI-filled weekend. He’s hitting with power and spraying the ball all over the yard. It’s going to be nice when he brings that bat with him to Reckling Park.

Guy Garibay (@guygaribayjr) torched Championship Sunday at the #FiveToolWS going 6-8 with 2 HR, 2 2B and 6 RBI. What a Guy!

Among the other Owls with strong weeks, Ben Dukes doubled his hit total for the summer, picking up four hits in seven at bats. Nathan Becker continues to rake and Cullen Hannigan notched his first home run.

Hitting Stats

Pitchers

There isn’t much to report this week on the pitching front. Ryan Rickett and AC Plum each made appearances. Plum added a few strikeouts in a three-inning outing but was tagged for two runs and three walks over the course of the outing.

Rice Baseball: 2020 Summer Ball July 5 Update

July 5, 2020 By Matthew Bartlett

Current, former and incoming Rice baseball players are participating in Summer Ball leagues around the country. Here’s the latest on those Owls.

First a quick note on rosters. I’ve tracked down all players that I could find with listed statistics, but I know there are others playing ball this summer. If you come across information on anyone else associated with Rice baseball playing summer ball, please send it my way. You can leave it in the comments or send it to me some other way. Thanks!

Hitters

As for the players I was able to track down, the most impressive start has come from a player who has yet to suit up for Rice baseball. Incoming outfielder Guy Garibay has been smashing the baseball in the Texas Premier League. He’s 6-for-20 this summer, but almost all of his hits have gone for extra bases. He’s hitting with power to all fields, including this bomb to straight away center:

Of the current Owls, none have done much to impress so far in their limited action. Dominic Cox has amassed a .400 OBP, but has just two hits in nine games.

Hitting Stats

Pitchers

Pitchers have had fewer outings than the hitters. AC Plum currently sports a 0.00 ERA through three appearances. He’s gone five innings, striking out nine and allowing just two hits. We haven’t seen much from him at Reckling thus far, but a solid summer will only help his chances to get on the bump. Brandon Deskins has yet to give up a hit in three innings, working 3.1 innings with nine strikeouts.

Pitching Stats
