Rice Baseball: 2021 MLB Owls update – July 18

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

According to a report from Jack Harris of the LA Times, Rendon suffered a setback and wont’ be available to return to play “for a couple more weeks.” He was placed on the injured list on July 6 and had previously been expected to return after the All-Star Break.

Through July 18, Rendon is hitting .240 with 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS is .712 and he’s collected 34 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt did not appear in the Rangers’ first game back from the All-Star Break. Their next game, a Saturday contest against the Blue Jays in Buffalo, NY, was postponed due to rain with a doubleheader set for Sunday.

Through July 18, Holt is hitting .213 with 11 extra-base hits, 17 walks and 28 strikeouts. His OPS is .604 and he’s collected 15 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Rain also changed the weekend schedule for the Twins, who played a doubleheader on Saturday after their Friday return from the All-Star Break was postponed. Duffey did not appear in either contest.

Through July 18, Duffey has a 3.38 ERA with a 1.269 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

A complete game from Gerrit Cole allowed for limited innings in the Yankees’ initial games back from the break. Luetge did not make an appearance so far and hasn’t pitched since July 9.

Through July 18, Luetge has a 3.35 ERA with a 1.116 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois did not appear in the Mariners’ initial set of games following the break either. His last appearance came on July 11.

Through the July 18, Chargois has a 2.49 ERA with a 0.829 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rice Baseball: Jose Cruz Jr. brings in immediate reinforcements

Rice baseball hit the Transfer Portal hard this summer, adding several reinforcements that will help the Owls on the field next season.

Newly named Rice baseball head coach Jose Cruz Jr. hit the ground running in Houston roughly one month ago. He hasn’t slowed down his pace since. In the past few weeks he’s hired pitching coaching Colter Bostick, invited current Houston Astros’ star Alex Bregman to stop by Reckling Park and hammered the Transfer Portal.

Rice baseball has picked up commitments from three new Owls, all of which have the potential to make an impact for the team on the diamond in 2022. Here’s a quick rundown of the new commits:

Tom Vincent, LHP – Texas A&M

Vincent was a two-way player during his days at Memorial High School in Houston, hitting .545 his senior year at the plate with a 2.55 ERA on the mound. He signed with Texas A&M last year but did not play for the Aggies during the 2021 season. Perfect Game tabbed him as the No. 10 LHP in Texas in his class. He has four years of eligibility remaining.

Drew Woodcox, SS – Texas Tech

Woodcox played his high school ball at Lamar High School and made his collegiate debut this spring. He played sparingly for Texas Tech, tallying just 36 official at bats with seven hits, a .167 average. Perfect Game ranked him as the No. 49 player in the state of Texas coming out of high school. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Jack Reidel, INF – North Carolina

A versatile infielder, Reidel is also returning home to Houston. The former Houston Memorial product saw limited action at North Carolina this past season, participating in eight games with two hits in 10 at bats, both of which came in his collegiate debut against James Madison. Reidel was the No. 19 player in the state of Texas coming out of high school and according to Mark Berman, drew interest from Texas A&M and TCU before choosing Rice.

Rice Baseball: 2021 Summer Ball – All-Star Break Update

Current, former and incoming Rice baseball players are participating in Summer Ball leagues around the country. Here’s the latest on those Owls.

First a quick note on rosters. I’ve tracked down all players that I could find with listed statistics, but I know there are others playing ball this summer. If you come across information on anyone else associated with Rice baseball playing summer ball, please send it my way. You can leave it in the comments or send it to me some other way. Thanks!

Hitters

Everyone has seemingly gotten in on the fun at the plate this summer. Four different Owls enter mid-July with a batting average better than .290. That includes Austin Bulman, Nathan Becker and Cullen Hannigan, each of which earned All-Star recognition in their respective leagues for their tremendous performances to this point in the season.

Those four have done the bulk of the damage for the Rice bats. Hal Hughes picked up his first home run of the summer. He, Justin Long and William Burbank all notched their first extra base hits of the season over the past two weeks as well.

Hitting Stats

Pitchers

Micah Davis, Matthew Linskey and Dalton Wood each had outings since the last update with Davis settling into form. He struck out eight batters over 4.2 innings across two separate outings, upping his summer K count from two to double-digits in a short window. Linskey did allow his first earned run of the summer, but has maintained a microscopic 0.96 ERA.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon ended the first half of the season on the injured list, his third time receiving that designation this season, this time with a hamstring strain keeping him sidelined. He’s expected to be ready after the break

Through the All-Star Break, Rendon is hitting .240 with 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS is .712 and he’s collected 34 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt had a five-game hitting streak interrupted on Saturday. During that run he hit his second home run of the season and collected three RBI.

Through the All-Star Break, Holt is hitting .219 with 11 extra-base hits, 17 walks and 28 strikeouts. His OPS is .620 and he’s collected 15 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey was called upon three times this week, earning a pair of holds and striking out two in 2.1 innings pitched, including two score-less, hit-less outings against the Tigers over the weekend.

Through the All-Star Break, Duffey has a 3.85 ERA with a 1.277 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge only made one appearance since July 4, but it was a good one. He pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief against the Astros, striking out one while retiring all four batters he faced in the big road win. He earned the decision as well, giving him three wins on the year.

Through the All-Star Break, Luetge has a 3.24 ERA with a 1.116 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois toed the rubber twice this week, working a pair of scoreless frames with just one baserunner permitted via hit in the seven hitters he faced.

Through the All-Star Break, Chargois has a 2.59 ERA with a 0.863 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 2021 MLB season is underway and Rice baseball alums are busy on the mound and at the plate. Here’s the latest from the MLB Owls from this week.

Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels

Rendon has started to heat up over the last couple of weeks, including four hits (including the no-doubt home run below) across three games against the Orioles.

Rendon left Sunday’s game with hamstring tightness but is expected to avoid the injured list.

Through July 4, Rendon is hitting .240 with 19 extra-base hits, 29 walks and 41 strikeouts. His OPS is .712 and he’s collected 34 RBI.

Brock Holt – Texas Rangers

Holt strung together a couple of good games in the Rangers’ holiday weekend series against the Mariners. He collected a two-RBI (below) on Friday and followed up with a 2-for-3 day on Sunday.

Through July 4, Holt is hitting .222 with 10 extra-base hits, 17 walks and 26 strikeouts. His OPS is .625 and he’s collected 14 RBI.

Tyler Duffey – Minnesota Twins

Duffey worked a combined two scoreless innings this week, retiring six of the seven batters he faced with one strikeout, one walk and no hits allowed in the process.

Through July 4, Duffey has a 3.45 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP. He’s averaging 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lucas Luetge – New York Yankees

Luetge was thrown the wolves this week, inheriting six total runners in four relief appearances. Five of the six scored. Those outings ballooned Luetge’s ERA after a seven-game stint in which he did not allow an earned run.

Through July 4, Luetge has a 3.46 ERA with a 1.152 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

J.T. Chargois – Seattle Mariners

Chargois battled through 1.2 innings of relief work this week, allowing one run on two separate occasions, but doing enough to help the Mariners win both games.

Through July 4, Chargois has a 2.82 ERA with a 0.896 WHIP. He’s averaging 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
